Yellow Door Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Been here a few times with friends and it has always been a treat. We love the rotating seasonal menu items. They are fresh and delicious and have a wide variety to appeal to everyone! Easter brunch was well themed and great too. They even have complimentary coat check.
We have been to the Yellow Door twice now and by far my favorite place. It is perfect from the time you walk in to when you leave. The service is exceptional and the food is the most amazing food I have ever had. The desserts...... don't leave without having some!! We will be back many, many times!!!
Great atmosphere, great service and very tasty food. We had the cheese fondu, which was very good but nothing overly original but the Cobb salad and the perogies were fantastic! The only complaint was that we went there because we saw on the online menu that they had a French desert called l'île flottante. My French friend was so excited because she loves them in France but they removed it from their menu. Overall it was a great meal.
My wife and I had our anniversary dinner at Yellow Door - when making our reservation, I'd indicated that it was our anniversary and they went all out. Daniel, our server, was subtle but helpful. Started with Cheese Fondue, a meal in itself. I had the rib eye - possibly one of the best cuts I'd had in about 5 years; my wife had the Chicken w Mushroom - also outstanding. They also served a complimentary dessert (chocolate truffle lollipops) along with some ice wine (tasty!) for our anniversary. Highly recommend for a romantic night out!
Yellow Door Bistro is fast becoming one of my favourite restaurants in Calgary. I've been there 4 times and the food has always been exceptional. The sous-vide steak is a must-have experience if you love steak. It's a place that bakes all it's own breads, cures their own meat and the flavours in the entrees are a foodie's delight. They have a great weekend brunch, not the usually big buffet with so many choices you don't know where to start but a selection of what most people would want for a brunch on a sunday, there have been the odd item I didn't care for but so far their batting average for me has been stellar. Service is efficient and discreet, they check up on you often enough not to be disruptive and are always there when you need them.
Two friends and I went to The Yellow Door for a brunch last sunday and honestly it was such a disappointment! There is 3 options for brunch: buffet, continental and a la carte. I took a look at the buffet and the options were not very attractive, so I decided to go for the continental option which was pretty much, pastries, some cheese and oatmeal and my friends ordered 2 eggs benedict. One of the egg benedict was very cold and the eggs were not poached the way she ordered (medium). After complaining with the waitress another one was brought and it seemed to be ok. Coffee was served cold twice! Even the waitress got embarrassed when she realized the coffee was totally cold!
The buffet lacks variety.. The only thing I really like about the this place was the ambiance.. It's very modern and I like the style.
Overall.. Bad experience. I was expecting way more from such a place like the Yellow Door. I do not recommend this place for brunch.
I've always wanted to try this place, and it was completely worth the wait! My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed the brunch buffet (the fluffy scrambled eggs, Dutch cake, and miniature sandwiches were big hits), and loved the great service and beautiful decor! We will be back for sure!
The meal, the service, everything was just wonderful. I would have liked to see a slightly larger wine list (by the glass) but they did have enough of a selection I found something. Our server was excellent, very attentive, our food was brought out with perfect timing and it was just the right amount to leave you full and happy! I will definitely go back.
I've eaten here twice - once for NYE, once for dining week. They are unable to handle "events" with set menus because both times the service was very slow. In fact for dining week, we had to take our dessert to-go because the service had gone well over our lunch hour (waited 20 mins for our app, 45 mins for our entrée - and this didn't include the time it took to eat it!) We were in the restaurant for over 1.5 hrs! On the bright side, the staff was very friendly.
The food itself was hit and miss. Some items were pretty tasty while others lacked luster. For example, my fish was overcooked and dry - even though it had decent flavor. However for the amount it costs for fine dining, you expect better.
Although the venue is very modern and beautiful, I think there are many other gems in Calgary in terms of food.
I've heard that their brunch was good but I'm afraid to give this place a third try...
Had a very nice lunch recently. Our server was outstanding. I had the 3 course fixed price menu. The salad was good but not outstanding. Lamb and fries were excellent and the dessert was superb. My wife had the seafood wrap which was good but lacking lobster. Cappuccinos were excellent. Overall, a very good experience.
We took our oldest daughter (who is a foodie) here for her birthday. She ordered from the tasting menu and enjoyed the lamb on a bun. The dessert was very good. She doesn't usually eat dessert, but tasted and shared the warm almond torte with clotted cream. She was offered a free mimosa for her birthday. The others in the party opted for the brunch. The food was good, and despite the brunch ending soon, it was kept well stocked. I enjoyed the crisp bacon and the couscous salad, as well as the scrambled eggs (very creamy). The bread under the eggs benny was too crusty to eat. The hash browns were very good as well.
The server was polite and attentive, without being intrusive.
Overall, a good experience for us.
We had the Big Taste 2015 lunch menu and ordered the two entrees. We loved the freshness and crispness of the salads. The salmon entree was cooked to perfection with nice crispy potatoes on the top. The lamb dip was more gammy than we anticipated and felt that it was not served hot enough (temperature wise). The star of the show was the almond raspberry tart. Great way to round up our lunch.
We were group of 5 having dinner to celebrate one of friend's birthday.
I mentioned that at the time of making reservation.
They prepared a nice assorted chocolate plate for us which was served on the plate has ”Happy birthday” on it.
My friend was very happy to see it!
The server was very nice and his service was excellent.
They didn't rush us at all even we stayed beyond their business hour.
We really enjoyed their dishes as well!
Thank you for great time & dinner!
So my wife tried looking for a brunch on a Saturday and we found this place. As soon as we got there we had a booth for my family of 3. I took a look at the brunch buffet and was not really impressed as some dishes were empty and I did not want to spend 24 dollars. We were about to leave but decided to stay. I decided to order off the menu and my wife decided to go for the brunch buffet. They allowed my son who was 3 to eat off the buffet for free which made it a better deal. I ordered the yellow door hash. While I was waiting for my food the place got busier and I noticed that they were constantly filling up the dishes for the buffet. My wife brought a plate and she enjoyed it very much. I received my order and the first bite was amazing! I did try a taste of the wild mushroom and grits off the buffet and it was unbelievable. I would definatley come back here again. Writing this review is actually making me hungry.
The first time I visited the Yellow Door was for the Big Taste 2 years ago, with a group of 8 people. The food was just as fantastic this time with just 3 of us! Always a cool and modern look in the restaurant and the perfect combination of upscale and casual. We started with the cheese fondue which was served with a variety of breads. A great starter to share. I then ordered the beef short rib which was fall apart, melt in your mouth delicious! The service was great too. My water glass was never empty and the server was there often enough when we needed something, but not so often it impeded on out visit with an out of town friend. Will be going back soon!
We went to YDB for the first time and was impressed! We were seated promptly and was given a nice banquet seating - mind you, the way their seating was done it was pretty cool. Really like the lounge-y feel!
Food was good but the selection was not so huge for a buffet. The spread wasdelicious but I wish there were more gluten free options.
Our server was friendly and pleasant and overall, it was fabulous!
We will try to come in for another visit soon!
I had called Yellow Door Friday to see if they had a brunch menu available on the holiday Monday. The girl on the phone told me yes, they did, so I made the reservation. When our party arrived, we were given the lunch menu. I asked about the brunch (which I had heard great reviews on) and the waitress told me they were not doing it today. I was dissapointed, but the lunch menu looked positive so we stayed and ordered lunch. 45 minutes later, our lunch came. That's a little lengthy for a lunch, but still I hoped it was worth the wait. The pasta I ordered was unfortunately bland and lacked seasoning, and the sauce wasn't even what was described on the menu.
The waitress came back a few minutes later and apologized for the lunch taking so long, and insisted the house cover dessert. We happily agreed - at least they recognized their long wait times. Little did we know, dessert itself would take another 30 minutes to get to our table.
Their poor service and lack of organization lost them a few customers - myself included. I won't be going back.
With a special 5 course Valentine's Day menu and wine parings, this was one of the most exceptional dinners we've had. Each course was a delight and prepared beautifully. Staff were attentive and the dinner was paced so that we didn't feel the slightest bit rushed, even though it was probably one of their busiest evenings in the year. The setting is modern and bright. I highly recommend for a special evening out!
The room is stunning, had an unfortunate seat near the door, but found it to be better for people watching.
We had the five course chefs menu alonnwith beef tartar and short ribs to accompany, it was a lot of food, but everything was creative, new, visually stunning, and high on flavors!
The service was outstanding, Paul was busy and was on top of everything! The " mad hatter" concierge has a great presence of high end service, he folds a customers napkin as they leave a table for a moment!
For a special occasion out with a date or close friends and family, I would recommend yellow door, fairly expensive but fair for the quality of food and amibince provided by the room! Cheers
Our party of four had a very positive and delicious experience at YDB the other evening. From the moment we were greeted at the door to when we left, the service was professional, attentive and personable, without being cloying at all. The room has an off-beat eclectic charm to the decor, which I thought added to the atmosphere, and gives a friendly energetic feel, but is quiet enough for comfortable conversation - it seems this is getting rarer to find these days. The team worked really smoothly together, we got a "treat" of champagne to start in honour of YDB's birthday - Veuve Clicquot no less! - and very knowledgeable advice about menu and wine choices. The food lived up to the level of service too. We had the duck cassoulet, which was sort of "deconstructed" as is the current trend, in this case to great effect. The duck was beautifully tender and tasty (though, one small point of criticism, slightly overdone to my taste - more toward the medium end of medium-rare than rare, but we are quibbling here, it was still delicious! - combined with a wonderfully rich sauce, smoky lentils and dried tomatoes, it was the perfect cold weather dish! The short ribs, tried by others in the party were rich, tender and tasty too. We didn't over-indulge in dessert, but the one that was ordered was an amazing creation of ice-cream, cream and macaroon - beautiful to look at and from the reports with a taste to match!
Highly recommended - I'll be back.
If you are looking for a very modern, brightly lite (not to bright) restaurant with good food and amazing service, then this spot is for you. The staff made everything seem flawless from the moment we walked into the restaurant. Food was very good, our waiter was spot on with his timing for everything. I would definitely come back to this restaurant. Most of their menu is available in gluten free, which was a huge perk for one of our dining members. A good variety on the menu and they have a lot of wines to chose from. Portions are generous for the bigger eaters or people who like to share.
A group of us met before the Flames game for dinner. 5 of the 6 of us had the pre-game special and no one was disappointed! The quality of the food and value for your money is outstanding! Both the Short Rib Meatball and spaghetti and the Steak and Frites were wonderful.
Looking for a place to have brunch on Super Bowl Sunday, we decided to try the Yellow Door Bistro in the Hotel Arts. The modern, well-lit, eatery created a vibrant atmosphere that we were eager to enjoy. We decided on the buffet brunch to take in as many different offerings as we could, and we were not disappointed. From standard breakfast fair such as fruit and bacon to more interesting creations such as wild mushroom grits and chili con carne, we enjoyed it all and left feeling very satisfied.
My girlfriend went here twice for work and was very disappointed in the service and food. I had never been and she thought maybe supper time would be better. It wasn't. This place just doesn't live up to the spot its in. The restaurant is really nice inside and the location is good. They just drop the ball on the important stuff like food quality and really poor service. I had the meatball spaghetti with no olives. When it arrived it was cold and filled with olives. When the waitress came I simply mentioned the mistake and she could care less. She said they could remake it but I am never a fan of sending food back to the kitchen so I just ate it. It really wasn't good and I ended up just leaving it. We went here because it's not a cheap place and that usually means good service and quality food. I really have had much better food for much cheaper all over Calgary. Three strikes and you're out Yellow Door. Never again.
We brought my mom in to celebrate her 60th birthday this past weekend. I mentioned this in the comments portion of the reservation i made on opentable. From the minute we walked in, the staff at Yellow Door Bistro went above and beyond to make Mom feel special on her day.
After a delicious brunch, our server brought over a beautiful assortment of handmade chocolates and treats for Mom, with a special note wishing her a happy birthday. She was absolutely thrilled and is still raving about it three days later!
Thanks YDB for going the extra mile! Mom is already talking about coming back to try the dinner menu!
We tried out the buffet and everything tasted amazing! I expected to see some new and creative items but perhaps we came too late (arrived 1pm and brunch ends at 2.30). Will definitely go again and try out menu items instead.
Oh and the service was phenomenal!
