About Yakitori Hachibei - Chinatown Hawaii
Bringing the spirit of Hakata Yakitori to Hawaii. Using traditional Japanese techniques passed down through generations, our chefs grill Hawaii's natural ingredients to perfection. Supporting the community we serve, we are committed to sourcing the very finest ingredients from Hawaii's many talented farmers, fisherman, purveyors and suppliers. All of our yakitori is skewered fresh daily and our broths and soups are taken naturally from katsuobushi (dry shaved bonito), konbu (dried kelp) and iiriko (dried sardine).
A wide range of beer, wine, nihonshu (sake), shochu, chuhai and highballs are available to complement our Yakitori.
Housed in a 1902 brick building in Chinatown, Yakitori Hachibei, with a retro-sleek ambiance, brings a new dining destination to the heart of Old Honolulu.

Yakitori Hachibei - Chinatown Hawaii Ratings and Reviews
Brilliant, memorable. An outstanding addition to the Oahu restaurant scene, and definitely worth the trouble to reserve and go over to the Chinatown area. Excellent interior. Yakitori and other menu items are authentic, perfectly prepared and correctly presented. Many choices possible from a varied menu; excellent choices of wines and sakes.
Absolutely nothing like it in the USA, it is worth a special detour. When and if Michelin comes to Hawaii, its sure to get a Star!
Yakitori Hachibei was overall an okay experience being that the service was what knocked it down. My party and I were at the restaurant for a total of three hours; some of us had to wait half an hour to an hour for our dish and our server had forgot to put in some of our orders. The food was pretty good and they had the some unique dish! I would recommend the Mint Honey Lemon Chuhai; it was a sweet drink and you would have never guessed there was alcohol in it! Along with the delicious food, the decor was nice as well.
This was our first time here and we will definitely be back. All of the dishes were excellent and priced right. They also have a good Happy Hour from 5-6 PM with most dishes at $5. Reservations are a must, especially on weekends as walk-ins were told it was a two hour wait. The owner, Robert came around and introduced himself. After talking to him for 2-3 minutes, he makes you feel like an old friend and you can feel the true Aloha spirit.
Tried to walk-n before but they are busy so needed to make reservation. Husband was interested in one of the Special Course meals but we were told that both of us would have to order a Special Course meal. I felt it was too much food for me. Also, we were going to a concert after so didn't want to take leftovers. Also a little pricey for the least expensive Course at $45.00.
The shrimp yakitori consisted of one shrimp for $6.90. The farm salad was very good and enough for the two of us to share with delicious mango dressing.
Yakitori Hachibei offers the best authentic grilled chicken dishes in Honolulu. When you enter the restaurant you are immediately greeted by Diana and/or Robert and made to feel like a welcomed guest. The charcoal grill used to cook most of the chicken dishes uses a special charcoal brought in from Japan. The result is delicious mouthwatering chicken. In addition to the grilled chicken dishes there are many other delicious dishes created in the Kitchen that you will also enjoy. Everyone at Hachibei works hard to provide great service to every guest. I highly recommend Yakitori Hachibei to anyone in search of authentic Japanese grill chicken dishes.
Location is somewhat funky, old Chinatown neighborhood with new/fresh food and drink places sprinkled throughout. Yakitori Hachibei is not your traditional yakitori restaurant, but the food was very good and selection of alcohol was also very good. The decor was clean, simple, and comforting. Feels better once you are inside and I will definitely return to sample more of the menu.
The service was worst. They do not look customers.
I storongly do not recommend to go the place especially Japneses people.
Japanese people will disappoint their service and to much high price.
The foods are good.
But, the price is too expencive aginst the quality of foods.
If you are looking for a great Yakitori restaurant, Yakitori Hachibei does chicken many delicious ways. Yakitori is cooked over a charcoal grill with special charcoal from Japan. The result is delicious chicken that will have you ordering more. In addition to various chicken dishes, the grilled pork belly (butabara) and grilled vegetables are equally delicious. Many of the dishes are served tapas style so you can enjoy several dishes at once. There is also a good selection of cocktails to enjoy with the food. The service is great and the everyone works hard to make your visit enjoyable. Check them out the next time you're hungry for a great meal.
The otherwise wonderful dinner was ruined when the hostess asked us to give up our table for customers waiting for a table. This was while I was still eating my dessert . If we were occupying the table after we were done with our meal, it might have been understandable even though we were not told of any time limit in advance. This was a special occasion celebrating a friend's birthday and it ended abruptly and unpleasantly. Patrons should be told in advance of time limits!
I would like to mention that the food was delicious and our server was terrific!
I must say, from the moment that I booked my reservations I was excited and Yakitori Hachibei - Chinatown did not disappoint. EVERY SINGLE THING that I ate that day was exceptional. I couldn't say enough good things about the food that would do this establishment justice.
So you're just going to have to take my word for it and try it yourself.
This place just isn't about the food, but the ENTIRE experience. The atmosphere was simply awesome; it was a packed house, however, it didn't feel cramped and wasn't too loud.
In observing the staff, everything seemed to be going off without any hiccups. Our server was everything I look for in a server... she was bright, charming, knowledgeable, attentive, knew how and when to joke, and made amazing recommendations. It certainly was all hands on deck; I mean, not only was the owner checking in with the guests on their experience, he was even wiping down tables in order to prepare for the next set of guests.
WHO EVEN DOES THAT ANYMORE?!
I will definitely be returning and will continue to do so for as long as they are around.
Thank you Yakitori Hachibei for a such a wonderful experience. I look forward to the next one!!
Will not be returning! Quite possibly the worst dinner party service we ever experienced in Honolulu. We pre-planned this dinner weeks in advance and even went so far as to meet with the kitchen to pre-select the starter items per the restaurants request to help speed up the food orders. It was all for nothing as some of the starters came out and some did not. After ordering the main course and waiting for the food we were told some items were sold out and had to order different items! The server had poor English communication and could not remember who ordered what items. The party was a birthday dinner party of 10 local people which is not that large but clearly a 2nd server was needed as it took over 3 hours to complete this dinner. Lastly, after all the food dishes were gone we were not offered a desert menu and the birthday girl had to ask for a desert in which they charged us for. On a bill over $600 it's pretty standard to comp the birthday person's desert. I can say the food tasted good but the portion size is very small for the price and the kitchen took too long to make each dish. The ambiance was nice but that we're it ends for us. This is not a place for dinning parties over the size of 5 or if you have big appetites.
The food, service, and ambience at Hachibei were very good. For yakitori, it's a little pricey: at almost $6 per stick, it is possible to rapidly build up a tab. However, the staff was very attentive, and the proprietor of the restaurant personally thanked us on the way out. I would definitely recommend Hachibei for special occasions and business meals.
