  • Dao Deli Guest Chef Dinner

    May 17, 2025 only
We have Chef Anthony Dao of Dao Deli coming in from Hood River to cook with us for one night only! Fun fact: Anthony cooked Louis & Jolyn's engagement lunch at Hiyu Wine Farm for their closest friends and family AND recently did a pop-up at Maurice to showcase his cooking to the Portland community. We had a chance to catch his pop-up at Maurice and we were blown away! Needless to say, we LOVE the way he cooks and we can't wait to share it with you! His food is a perfect pairing to our first generation American concept. No tickets, but reservations highly recommended! A la carte menu all night; we'll have a few of Anthony's dishes alongside our a la carte menu. See you there! ABOUT THE CHEF: Anthony Dao is a Pacific Northwest native and Columbia River Gorge resident. As a first-generation American born to Vietnamese refugees, he brings a richly multicultural perspective to his cooking. After a brief stint in the corporate space upon completing his undergrad at Washington State University, his budding interest in hospitality first took him to New York City, where he worked in Michelin-starred kitchens like The Nomad, The Finch and Casa Mono. An itch for adventure later led him to Australia, where he and his partner, Kaylee, worked on farms and vineyards, seeking a closer connection to the land and learning how that relationship ultimately impacts flavor. Pursuing an integration of his experiences in agriculture, wine and hospitality, he returned to the Pacific Northwest and joined the team at James Beard-nominated Hiyu Wine Farm in Hood River, OR where he spent nearly four years as the sous chef. Now, he's operating a roving pop-up called Dao Deli, sharing his vision throughout the Gorge and beyond.

Expectations were high for this exclusive dinner. We enjoyed the wine we selected and the bread with the first course, but it was all kind of down hill from there. The pasta dinner ended with a very tiny, flat 3”x3” slice of lasagna that we had to share? (Did they run out?) They dropped the check without asking if we needed anything else and when we got up to leave there were no servers in sight - I had to find my own jacket from a heaped coat rack. Turned out, there was no one around because, as we saw through the window when we left, the whole crew were in the back eating pizza and congratulating each other? While the dining room was still 3/4 full? Having traveled down from Seattle for this, we felt it was a pretty expensive bummer deal.

We had such a great time at Xiao Ye. From the moment we walked in, the team made us feel right at home—super friendly and genuinely attentive in a way that made the whole night feel easy and fun. We tried a bunch of dishes and honestly couldn’t pick a favorite. The pasta was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, the drink list was thoughtful and full of gems, and those madeleines? Next level. Warm, soft, golden-edged perfection. Also, don’t sleep on the Broccoli Caesar—it’s not your average Caesar salad. It’s crunchy, bold, and totally unexpected in the best way. Xiao Ye feels like the kind of neighborhood gem you want to tell all your friends about, while also setting the bar for what modern Portland dining can be. Can’t wait to go back.
