Wrights Anglers Rest
Just a 10-15-minute drive from Dublin City Centre, this landmark establishment in the seclusion of the Strawberry Beds – next door to the Phoenix Park – has a history that stretches back to Cromwellian times and the famous patriot Michael Collins. It has long been considered as his the favourite watering hole and for anglers fishing along the banks of the adjacent River Liffey.
Today, the tradition of great food and drink continues with a strong culinary reputation, including the freshest seafood landed by Wrights of Howth, and a wide selection of national and international brands of beers, wines and spirits.
Love going to the Anglers Rest, beautiful food, the ambiance and staff are very friendly and helpful.
We had a fabulous family meal, and an impromptu rendition of Happy Birthday for my father in law. Beautiful food, fantastic service and warm, welcoming staff. Our table was close to a speaker, music was loud initially but when live music started, it was much easier on the ear and conversation. Thank you so much, we will be back!
I really wanted to love our dinner, having been there some years ago and still remembering how delicious our meal was we had high expectations. But it didn’t blow us away.
Hit and miss, some food was lovely other food just good.
Service slow and not attentive. Draft from the door was unpleasant and the kitchen noise was distracting, guess it’s some oven related alert that kept beeping behind my head.
Wouldn’t be rushing back
It is a cosy, down to earth venue with a a lovely atmosphere. Consistently good, simple traditional food done well. Staff were courteous and efficient, everything came out in good time and the food was great.
I really enjoyed the uilleann pipes in the background. Lovely unique place to go for a special meal.
Food was nice but took 40 minutes to get food. Very poor service
Food was excellent ( a great pint too), service was also excellent, very attentive staff especially the manager who was a really nice guy and regularly checked with my wife and I that everything was to our liking , When we ordered a taxi it arrived promptly, a really nice evening all around
The food is great, the setting is lovely and the staff are really good. It is a little expensive for what it is but overall I'd recommend it. Went on a Thursday and it was busy but didn't feel cramped. It had a relaxed feel and the staff were on the ball without being in your face. Have no problem going back again
I went for Sunday dinner & they were only providing a lunch menu which was limited. There was notice in their site or at the venue that dinner was the lunch menu. We left as the selection did not accommodate for the needs of 2 of the guests.
Love going here. Perfect place to catch up with friends. Lovely atmosphere, noise level perfect for chatting. Also well within everyone's budget. Food is second to none and service is friendly and excellent. Cannot speak more highly of here.
Food and service and venue lovely. Had a gorgeous fire lighting and lovely traditional music playing which was lovely as were were dining with visitors from the UK, although a little hard to hear due to function upstairs. The only downside were the toilets. Could do with an upgrade!
My family and I love the food at the anglers rest since Ollie took it over. We love the ambiance and the staff are a pleasure to be served by. There’s so much thought in the decor and I love the candles. Thank you for A lovely evening.
Anglers Rest is a fantastic restaurant. The food is always fresh, presented beautifully, and the portions are generous. The ambiance is very welcoming and every time we have gone, there has always been live music playing in the background. The staff are very attentive. Would highly recommend.
I booked a table for 8.30pm for my boyfriend and I. Upon arrival we ordered our drinks and food as we knew what we wanted, we were waiting an insanely long amount of time. At 9.30pm I asked one of the servers where our food was and he just said it was on the way. We received our food at 9.45pm, this is an hour and 15 mins we waited on our food!! We didn’t even get an apology off any of the staff! This is unacceptable and unprofessional, We will not be back here again.
Early bird options were poor.
Gorgeous Sunday Lunch. Food was fab and service was excellent
Fantastic service and hospitality. Love this place when we visit Dublin.
First of all , I enjoyed the night in Wrights and would go again. However, I was disappointed in the menu selections. You'd expect Wrights to include an interesting choice of fish dishes on the menu. Choice was very limited and a bit uninteresting. Very nice atmosphere though, and friendly helpful staff. Could be a great venue with a bit more attention to the food.
Service was poor. Waiter not very observant and slow to react. Her Colleague had an attitude. My wife did not enjoy the night and it was her Birthday. So we won’t be back.
Would highly recommend. We enjoyed delicious fresh seafood platter, the chicken wings were amazing, and desserts were excellent. Great wine list also. The service was great, very attentive and helpful. Great space and atmosphere, we went on a Friday evening and very mature crowd. Have been previously during the week with children and they have enjoyed it and were well catered for.
Had a family dinner here for Dad's 60th was such a lovely evening! Staff made a fuss of Dad and meal was amazing!
Food quality was excellent. But service was really poor (perhaps because they were so busy . They forgot our starters completely , instead of the starter the main closures arrived 50 minutes after ordering . Long delay in paying bill. Steak was delicious
Absolutely outstanding food service and atmosphere.
Very good service. Only feedback would be to have air conditioning on warm days or fire off. Food was Delightful and will definitely be back again....
Food was fantastic and service was outstanding as usual. Staff are very friendly and very helpful. They have won us over so much we are even getting married there.
Excellent food...shame you have to drive there..
We eaten here many times & always enjoyed. On this occasion as a party of 6 we were seated at two small tables pushed together and not meant for 6. The seafood platter was not as we recall very sparse & the batter on the fish & chips dish was hard with very little fish inside. Disappointing visit
Lovely meal, great service. A bit loud when talking to fellow guests but to be fair that’s a typical Irish pub anyway
Great food, service, atmosphere etc
Smell from turf fire outside was bit too much.
Anglers rest is an amazing venue we got married there a year ago and just celebrated our anniversary with dinner in the restaurant. The food is wonderful and the staff are the best!
Good atmosphere though a bit noisy. Staff very friendly and professional and food very good. Value about average for the type of fare we ordered
The drinks were and service good. The hake was ok Fish pie was made up of salmon which was dry and I didn't detect any other fish in the pie I didn't order salmon pie and the potatoes on top were watery and tasteless. The burger was fairly good the chips were fries not chips . Chicken wings were rather bland.
My visit last Saturday night was disappointing, We were a small group of 4. I had fish and chips, one side of the batter was so salty it was practically inedible. My thoughts were someone accidentally spilled salt but went ahead of served it anyway. The womens toilets were a disgrace, looked like no one had checked them in hours, only one of the 3 cubicles were fit for purpose.
We have been regulars here for years now and it can occasionally be touch and go with food and service. Unfortunately this last visit wasn’t great. We had a guest visiting from abroad and the service was lacking to say the least. Waitress seemed fed up and annoyed when we enquired after a 50 minute wait when we could expect our mains. Manager was dismissive when he asked how our night was and we said ‘a bit disappointing’. He didn’t seem to care at all. Food was good.
Great staff great food great venue will definitely return
Nice location and food, but quite slow service. We had to wait long for our meals to arrive, then for the empty plates to be taken away.
We missed the early bird menu as we arrived late our own fault, food was excellent service faultless and its a love place with a great atmosphere just feel a la carts menu a bit overpriced
I was delighted with this restaurant, I couldn’t recommend it enough! A hidden gem 👍🏼
I thought it was overpriced In regard to the quality and portion sizes of the food. They had no chowder left which was disappointing and the portion of fresh salmon which I ordered instead was so small for the price of €10 that we complained and they took it off the bill. We had a pre dinner drink at the bar and while the traditional Irish music was very good the bar itself was covered in empty/dirty glasses with no staff member bothering to stack them into the dishwasher basket. I found this very surprising and indeed off putting in terms of image. Won’t be returning or recommending it to friends.
