Woodpecker by David Burke
Available for Bar Seating Only
Pizza was fantastic!
Slightly off-beat neighborhood and the restaurant was very quiet when we visited. May be why a puls'd voucher was available, to make people aware of this spot. Food was excellent (tuna poke, scallops, wood-fired mushrooms & spinach, fettucine with shrimp all very tasty). Table service was fine, but we were disappointed that many menu items were not available, and they were also out of prosecco.
Love David Burke restaurants but food here was very disappointing. Pizza was not good. Steak was mediocre.
Lovely time. Nice place.
Average at best.
the service was impeccable. polite, attentive, just right. The food was delicious well repaired and presented and super creative without going overboard
Me and my wife went to this restaurant the day after Valentines day. At first glance it seemed like a great restaurant and to an extent it did not disappoint. The service was superb, the waiters and staff were on top of things and refilled out water and drinks without having to ask. They provided recommendations and food and drinks came out promptly. My main concern was with the food, we ordered the wings and rings appetizer, the chicken seemed to have been cooked hours ago and had that "not fresh" texture, aside from that, most of it was under cooked and pink on the inside. The rings were OK. I ordered the burger on an English muffin, which had a fine taste, but not good enough for the price. Wife had a pasta with shrimp and wasn't blown away. I probably wouldn't be coming back to this restaurant and honestly its a one and done unless the food quality improves. Either that or just drop the prices to better reflect whats being consumed.
I went on Valentine's Day w/ my gf, They offered a prix fix menu, which meant a departure from the normal full menu options :(
3 courses (app + entree + dessert) w/ glass of champagne for $75/person. Felt like an OK value. Both apps we ordered were very good, the tuna crudo was a stand out for the generous portion of tuna and it was delicious. The entrees proved to be a hit and miss experience. My gf ordered the halibut was very good, however, I ordered the pork chop w/ clams casino, def a unique combination of items. I was expecting a thick cut bone-in pork chop, but to my disappointment, it was a very thin piece of pork and not a very generous cut. It was prepared and cooked in an Italian sausage & peppers style prep which surprised me as well. Buyer's remorse and wish I had ordered the filet mignon :(
Lastly, the dessert was also a hit and miss. Their famous chocolate cheesecake popsicles came w/ only 3 in the order which was disappointing. I order the macarons which were very good and plentiful quantity.
So, all in all, w/ only having 2 drinks each, given it cost $260 total for dinner for both of us, just an OK experience and value.
Took my fiancé for a Anniversary/Valentines day dinner. It was a $75.00 pre-fix meal with a glass of champagne.
My finance had the Tuna Crudo (That was ok) and I had the steamed angry lobster dumplings (That was ok). For the Mains, she had the Lobster Ravoli (That was ok) and I had the WOODFIRE ROASTED PORK CHOP (awful)... The pork chop was small and thin. A ton of cabbage, watercress and who puts calms casino on a pork chop! Obviously, David Burke.... We also had two sides ROASTED MARBLE POTATOES and the Brussel Sprouts (That was ok).
Desert was ok, we had the RASPBERRY CHOCOLATE MOUSSE and the CHOCOLATE DIPPED CHEESECAKE POPS.
Plus two cocktails.
Our waitress was great and very attentive.
The bill came and it was totally not worth the $250.00 dollar price tag. To be honest, it left a bad taste in my mouth because I expected a lot more from a David Burke restaurant.
Don’t waste your time!
Food was excellent. Service was slow but our waitress was over seated. No complaints.
Highly recommended and absolutely loved it
The service was great. I loved the interior of the space. I had high expectations for the steak and while it was a quality cut of meat, prepared at the right temperature (medium) the seasoning/crust/flavor was not there. The sauce that it was plated on did not have a good flavor. The bread starter was really tasty. Enjoyed the fries. The cauliflower was my favorite part of the meal.
It was really good meal. We got the tuna crisp to start (amazing) and I had the special which was cod wrapped in bacon with Parmesan polenta. No complaints about the meal and would go back!
Good brunch with thoughtful staff. WE went early on a Saturday so the noise level was great and they played good music.
Staff was a little green, but friendly and able to get answers (it was restaurant weekend so the menu had some specialty items/deals). Food was delicious and portions were strong - typical David Burke if you have been to any of his other restaurants. Definitely get the crispy chicken!
We had a Monday evening meal at the bar. Great service, nice ambiance, super nice manager. We will be back. Place has space for private events. Food is yummy.
Dull environment recently ‘renovated’ but actually appeared that DB was simply removing some interesting items of value (signed pizza paddles, for example).
Originally shown to a table in a dark and quirky side room where no one was seated. Politely asked for a table in the main dining room and was accommodated.
The burgers were average at best. The Hippy Fries were inedible as they were likely sitting under a heat lamp far too long.
Our waiter was pleasant and attentive.
I would not return as there is nothing remotely remarkable about the restaurant or the food.
The meal and service were very average. Overall, despite a few of our diners having a good appetizer and enjoying the pizza, most felt the quality of the food was sub par. Overall, the quality was inconsistent for non-pizza entrees and the consensus was not to return.
My fault for waiting too long to make a reservation, but Woodpecker was close and available at the time we needed.
The menu looked very solid.
The execution of all of the dishes were terrible.
The octopus was slimy and awful.
The lamb meat balls and pasta were cold and flavorless.
Would not go back.
There’s a reason they had open tables while everyone else was slammed.
Very nice lunch. Calm atmosphere. Delicious food. Simple menu
The food was okay. Not impressed. Server was okay. Offered recommendations which were helpful but lacked personality. With so many other options in the area I won’t be back.
I have been a David Burke fan for years, Vegas, Chicago, New York, you name it. Always great experiences, food, ambience, etc... HOWEVER this is not typical Burke’s standards. Food is decent, wine is just not good, and service ? Well I felt at a TGFridays !
If you enjoy good food and service this is not the place for you !
Great food and have eaten here multiple times. Convenient to midtown.
Food was unimpressive. Pizza was gloppy.
Music (and choice of) wayyy too loud, which competed with high ceilings/ poor acoustics.
Everything was good! The food was great and decently priced. We got the breads and spreads, and wings and rings for starters and they were amazing. Entrees were all good too. The only negative was that even though open table said there was a reservation for 7:30, when we arrived this turned out to be untrue, and we had to wait for 20-30 minutes. The hostess was not very accommodating and didn’t really explain why I was able to make a reservation while they had no open tables and people waiting. However the hostess switched out for Nancy, and Nancy was the kindest sweetest person and made up for it. She checked in with us several times and made sure we were being taken care of. Nancy gets an A+!!!!!
Always great! We both got the Fried Chicken Sandwhicv & my guest commented that it's the best chicken sandwich in NYC!
Full disclosure- we never got to eat a meal at Woodpecker. I rated food at 3-stars as a default.
After a week of dining in New York, including a wonderful evening at the venerable Union Square Cafe, I found the front of house at Woodpecker to be relatively amateurish.
It was a special occasion, a family Christmas dinner at 6:15pm, and I received a call at about 5:50pm saying they were running late and asking if we could come in about 20-30 minutes later than planned. We complied and arrived at 6:40pm, and the front desk chided me for being late. I explained about the phone call and the young lady said “okay I’ll check you in”, however they were still running even later.
The front desk area was crowded with people waiting and the bar was full. I chose to wait outside in the cold with my family for what I expected to be 10 minutes. We waited another 20 minutes—- it was past 7pm by then— with no progress and no updates from the desk. Oh, and also no apologies. Moreover they seemed harried and resentful for having such a mess on their hands.
To make matters worse, we expected an a la carte menu to be available and they told us “no, it’s only pre fixe tonight”. My wife had confirmed by phone that a al carte would be available, but the young ladies replied “that’s wrong — I don’t know who told you that. It’s only pre fixe”, pronouncing “fixe” with a hard x as in “fix” the problem, only they didn’t fix any problems that night. One wonders what business a casual bistro has doing a pre fixe when they still can’t keep up with their reservations (presumably the reason for pre fixe at a place like this, other than maybe a profit motive).
Bottom line, we ended up walking out after 7:15, more than an hour after our reservation on Open Table. Lucky for us NYC has so many good restaurants; even on a cold Christmas evening we were able to score a 7:45pm table at a nice place in the Flatiron.
Clothesline bacon was amazing! Great food and service even on a busy holiday night.
Caveat: Event was Christmas dinner and very busy (see line below)
Woodpecker by David Burke was overbooked. We were on time for our reservation and standing near the hostess stand and people with reservations were being told to wait up to 1 hour.
We waited 40 minutes after the reservation time. We were comped two glasses of wine for the inconvenience.
We were seated. Food and service were meh.
Upon checking my credit card statement, Woodpecker by David Burke gave themselves an extra $100 on the tip.
The check was $194.89. We included at tip of $39 for a total of $233.89.
My VISA account was charged $333.89.
We saw another party disputing their check.
Woodpecker patrons, please check your bills.
Christmas Day 2019
Negatives first:- We came to New York for Christmas and booked a table at Woodpecker. On arrival for our meal we were told that our table would not be ready for another 15 mins. To cut a long story short we were eventually seated an hour and 15 mins later! Very poor! I feel that Woodpecker booked in too many people or the way they organised the timings were way off. Obviously people want to relax and enjoy their Christmas Day meal and therefore wanted to stay and have drinks after at their tables (and rightly so too) and the restaurant obviously did not take this in to account. It wasn't just us, many people were waiting all around the restaurant to be seated some were booked in before us. Other customers had actually cancelled their booking as they had waited so long! Terrible! I even heard a waitress complain that she could no longer work there!
Come to the food, it was nice and would have been better if it wasn't Luke warm! I didn't complain about that as I was all out off complaining and just wanted to eat.
The positives:- we obviously complained... severely! And they gave us a free drink at the bar and money off our bill at the end. Our waiter also was very calm and looked after us well during our meal. All I can say is that it was a shame as I really like the idea of the restaurant - lively, rustic but with a classy menu, unfortunately it needs to sort out the other stuff to make it a real gem.
The Young family
Service was great however the food itself was sadly bland all around. Pasta lacked sauce, burgers were dry, and the “angry” dumpling had no heat whatsoever. Overall disappointing.
Delicious Market salad & Branzino!
Needed a last minute spot to gather for office holiday celebration. Hostess and bartender were both very accommodating and food and drinks were great. Fun time at the bar! Will definitely be visiting agin
I found this restaurant during my first time using Open Table when I needed to book a large reservation within a week's notice on a Saturday for brunch. The restaurant seemed very classy from reviews and photos
I research before making the reservation. My reservation was at 11:30 and I was hoping to go in at 11 to make some additions to the set-up before my party arrived, but I didn't know that the actual restaurant wasn't open until 11:30 on the dot so I couldn't head in earlier. Once we sat down, the wait staff was very friendly and attentive to our needs. My friends and I were there for my birthday, and they were very sweet to everyone. All of our dishes were delicious--I especially would recommend the Breads and Spreads, the Buttermilk Chicken and Waffles, and the Brussels Sprouts! I think most (if not all) of us loved the whipped ricotta and the spicy herb butter that went with the soft and warm bread. The brussels sprouts were a hit even with those that didn't usually like the vegetable. We had a great time and the ambience of the restaurant was very pleasant. At the end of our meal, the staff brought out chocolate dipped cheesecake pops--enough for each one of us (11 in total) with a candle for me. That was an incredibly thoughtful gesture and I had a really nice birthday celebration at Woodpecker by David Burke :)
Food overrated and bottle of wine starts at $75. They won’t seat large groups until everyone is there claiming they don’t have enough menus.
Loved this comfort food destination, especially with the TopChef notoriety. Great cocktails, creative menu and delicious flavors. Will definitely go back. Try the Bacon Clothesline, Amazing!!!
We came here for a friend’s bday before seeing a show at MSG. The food was fresh and delicious. The staff was kind and very accommodating. I think this is one if, if not the best means near MSG. I will definitely be back!
Frankly, I got to the restaurant and they said they could not honor my reservation.
The staff was incredibly lovely and thoughtful, a great evening!!!
Food was excellent, hostess was rude, only one bathroom and very long line. We found openings on open so we called to verify. They were very nice on phone. However when we showed up for dinner, meeting friends from out of town that we haven’t seen in many years, our reservation was at 7:00 we were told they needed the table at 8:15. Since it was Friday night there were no other restaurants with out a long wait.
