wink Ratings and Reviews
My only gripe was the appetizers tasted a little bland, but not that bad, and that was really the only low point to an overall excellent dining experience. The entrees and desert were fantastic. The restaurant, while a bit small, didn't have any issues in terms of bumping into elbows or waiters/waitresses or having to try to shout over the noise. The waitstaff was excellent and very attentive.
I could rave about Wink for hours! In the OpenTable reso, I put that it was his birthday. The manager/maître d' called me that morning to find out his name and confirm the reso. When we got there, they had printed out individualized menus with Happy Birthday, N___ on them, and even had a separate copy signed by all of the chefs in an envelope for us to take with us! Additionally, the amazing server (wish I could remember her name- Heather, maybe?), offered to substitute one of the dishes off the 5 course menu for one on the 7 course that he wanted. Having worked in fine dining restaurants for 2 decades, this blew me away! Chefs NEVER want to substitute, but they did that with not even a moment's hesitation! I did the 5 course vegetarian tasting and he did the regular 7 course tasting menu, and the food was simply perfection. There is literally nothing bad to say about this amazing restaurant!!!
We LOVED our experience with Wink. The staff was incredibly accommodating and friendly. The chef was more than willing to make subsititutions for dietary needs. We even received a personalized menu, wishing us a happy anniversary, signed by all of the staff. Definitely a repeat next time we are in Austin!
The service was the best I've had in Austin. Amazing in every way.
The food was amazing, as was the wine paring, but the price was hight for Austin.
The setting and decor were odd and there was no one there (although it as a Monday night).
I'm not sure if I'll prioritize going back because of the ambiance--the decor needs a face lift--and the price.
The mussels were divine. I had red snapper that was delicious. The service is impeccable. The triple dessert was excellent. I love this place. It's one of the few places in Austin you can have an outstanding dining experience and talk with your dinner guests.
Wink is consistently exceptional. Food quality is unmatched in the Austin area.
With a menu that changes daily you know the ingredients are fresh. My wife and I have been enjoying Wink for over 7 years and are alway impressed by the food and felt welcomed by their expert staff.
My wife and I went to Wink to celebrate her birthday. The staff made things a little more special by printing her name on the menu and providing a copy of the menu that had been autographed by the chef and others from the kitchen.
We went with the 5 course tasting option with wine pairings. The wines were perfectly paired with each dish, but we wished we got a bit more information about the wines as they were served. All of the food was excellent.
The noise level is quite high, but it is a small and active dining room.
I can't say enough good things about Wink. The tasting menu was superb- just the right amount of food. The place was welcoming to everyone- men in shorts and women in cocktail dresses. We were celebrating a birthday and they really understand that the attention to detail makes a difference.
The kitchen did have some consistency issues- the crudo was perfect- a great combination of taste and texture. The next course was a scallop dish that took far too long- beautifully seared on the outside, cut through the middle and seemingly only cooked on one side. At first I thought that they hadn't finished cooking it and then I appreciated the "crispy to more rare". Next was a duck breast- could have come back just for that. Last main was a hangar steak. Rare. But it didn't feel intentionally cold. Not in the league of the other flavors. But who can say no to a warm chocolate cake with a swirl of cream.
We will be back.
Everything about the experience I had a Wink was great. Small room, intimate, comfortable. Beautiful decor on the inside. Our service was excellent from start to finish, and every piece of food placed on our table was eaten, every single thing was delicious. Went there for my wife and I's 9th Anniversary and it was a perfect choice.
I left and didn’t eat so I don’t know the food quality. I do know that it was really hot, the tables were really close to each other and very load where I had difficulty hearing my date speak. The tables were so close that we had to wait until the waitress finished taking a table’s order in order to sit down. I’m talking they pack’em in. For an upscale and a pricey place I at least want to be able to converse without yelling and be in a comfortable room temperature.
We really enjoyed our experience at Wink! We did the 5 course tasting meal and everything was fabulous. We don't eat red meat and they happily juggled the courses to bring us a fish course instead of the meat. We added the wine pairings and I do recommend that, although you end up with about 15 ounces or more of wine by the end of the shebang. We probably could have shared a wine flight, but with it spread out over the night, we were fine. I really loved the scallop salad and the flounder with okra although everything was amazing. The server explained the wine and the food with each course and was very knowledgeable. We were celebrating our anniversary and the staff prepared a personalized menu with our names on it and then had the chef and staff sign it. We felt special! This restaurant is tucked into a strip mall and is pretty unassuming from the outside, but it was absolutely fabulous!
For the cost of the meal the service and space was lackluster. Everyone was very pleasant but there was a certain passion and verve missing from the experience. The interior is really dated and I’ve seen nicer bathrooms in fast food restaurants. This really took away from the experience for us. The food was good but neither of us were blown away.
My husband and I went to Wink for a special occasion. We both ordered the vegetarian tasting menu with the wine pairings. Some of the dishes were truly delicious and had delightful, unexpected flavors. Some others fell flat, like the butter lettuce salad. Wine pairings were good, nothing blew me away, but we were pleased with the price point ($37/person). Service was 5/5, some of the best we've had in Austin. Our least favorite part of the experience was the space itself: the restaurant was full of strange, disjointed art and did not have any sense of cohesion. It felt like this fine-dining establishment tried too hard to be "quirky" when they designed their space in the year 2000, and they haven't changed it one bit in the last 17 years. Bottom line: food and wine were decent, service was excellent, but when I'm paying that much for a meal, I expect an exemplary dining room as well.
I really can't say enough good about this place. It was my first time there and a special occasion birthday for my boyfriend. I made a reservation and they called to confirm asking me if there was a special occasion. When we arrived, at the top of the menu they wrote his name and Happy Birthday! It really made it special. That was just the beginning of a terrific meal. We had a chef's five course tasting menu but skipped the wine pairing. Each course was perfectly timed. Just enough to savor each dish but not left wondering, "where's our next course?" The scallops were done to absolute perfection. The duck breast was so moist and succulent. I thought the hanger steak with a blackberry reduction was the weakest of all the dishes but no matter, everything else was out of the part. The dessert plate they brought was just crazy good, with a sampling of each dessert item. I loved their goat cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake. The creme brulee was fantastic. All of this in a really quaint space. The service was almost like we were the only ones there and their job was to make us happy. This was one of the best all around dining experiences I've had in a while and I eat out a lot. Kudos to Wink!
I have been a regular at Wink, and the food is very good every time. Dining area is a little tight, but once you settle in, you tend to block out the other customer's conversations. I don't ever recall ordering dessert there, perhaps because nothing really jumped out. Duck breast, scallops, sweetbreads are as good as it gets. Menu is too cute, no headings for each type of order (appetizers, entree, etc). Style (actually poor design) over substance.
I actually prefer the their wine bar, the sitting is better arranged. However the temperature is incredibly cool....like 68F. Maybe they should not worry about the wine so much, or buy a wine cooler, or hand out complementary parkas.
I’ve only been here twice in 15 years (I live in Colorado). This restaurant makes me want to LIVE in Austin! It’s such a gem tucked into a weird corner with the most delicious food and attentive staff west of the Mississippi. I can’t say enough good things about it!
