About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for fine wines
The Winding Stair Bookshop & Café became a famous Dublin landmark in the 1970s and 1980s. Named after the Yeats poem and in honour of its winding staircase, it is overlooking the river Liffey, with an iconic view of the Ha'penny bridge. As a popular meeting place for writers, musicians and artists, it was a well known hub for debate and creativity with many poems written, novels penned and movies shot within its walls. In 2006, Elaine Murphy brought this much-loved spot back to life as a restaurant, championing seasonal, Irish produce. The bookshop, located on the ground floor, was retained, as were many of the old bookshelves, photos and memories. The room retains its timeless charm with stripped wood tables and floors, and Bentwood café chairs. The view remains as quintessentially Dublin as ever.
The food is good, old-fashioned home cooking, with produce sourced from artisans within the island. Drink sare local and international craft beers & wines from stellar producers.

Excellent all around: from staff to food. Appetizers were also very good.

I had a lovely lunch experience- the ambience was special, understated, yet refined. Food was good- large portions- straight-forward Irish fare but elevated with quality ingredients.

Having read wonderful reviews and articles about “best of restaurants” our expectations were high. Ascending “the winding staircase” only heightened the excitement for a grand dinning experience. However, our hopes were quickly dashed. The food was vastly disappointing. My wife did not get past a quarter of her fish dish and she declared herself done. My lamb dinner was, although nicely red in color, so dry I also didn’t finish. Tragic that when you visit a city for a first time, with limited days to explore, you hate to experience such disappointment.

Food was good. Ambiance was laid back, antique like. Our particular table was an old desk which was cool and also made it uncomfortable for our tall friends. Unsure if food was worth the price?

A really interesting menu with a good range of choices for all palates. The service was exemplary. The fish sharing platter was really tasty and worked well between 4 people. The smoked haddock with cheesy mash was delicious. The Dingle crab was disappointing because it came in a lot of oil which had a strong coconut flavour. The pork cutlet was also delicious. The dark chocolate tart was a perfect end to the meal. An extensive wine list, with affordable choices. We would go back next time we are in Dublin.
