The Winding Stair Bookshop & Café became a famous Dublin landmark in the 1970s and 1980s. Named after the Yeats poem and in honour of its winding staircase, it is overlooking the river Liffey, with an iconic view of the Ha'penny bridge. As a popular meeting place for writers, musicians and artists, it was a well known hub for debate and creativity with many poems written, novels penned and movies shot within its walls. In 2006, Elaine Murphy brought this much-loved spot back to life as a restaurant, championing seasonal, Irish produce. The bookshop, located on the ground floor, was retained, as were many of the old bookshelves, photos and memories. The room retains its timeless charm with stripped wood tables and floors, and Bentwood café chairs.The view remains as quintessentially Dublin as ever.
The food is good, old-fashioned home cooking, with produce sourced from artisans within the island. Drink sare local and international craft beers & wines from stellar producers.

                            We ate there tonight- I seldom write a negative review but we were most disturbed by how one member of the floor staff berated the hard working kitchen staff. We had the table beside the kitchen and the conversation involved the f bomb twice- totally undeserved and unacceptable. Food was lovely but it was very loud but that’s expected as it was a full house. I love this restaurant and go periodically.

                            Ordered the Lamb Rump and unusually was warned the meat was pink (which it was), not a problem and that it was chewy (it was). The first time I have been in a restaurant and given direction by the staff not to eat something. I ignored their advice and ordered the dish only to find the meat difficult to eat to the point half of it I could not consume.

                            The food and the atmosphere was lovely but the service was poor. The waiter handed us the menu and didn’t even greet us let alone explain the menu or what the specials were. My dad asked for the beer menu, to which he didn’t recognise any of the beers and the waiter didn’t even bother to explain the beers to him, just took the menu from him. When the food came the other waiter came down and explained the platters, he was lovely and a credit to the restaurant. The other waiter never came down and asked us if everything was ok but was very quick bringing the card machine down when we got the bill. Food was great but the service needs to be greatly improved before charging prices like those!

                            A must go if you’re in Dublin! I don’t know why they don’t have a Michellin star, they really should. The service was superb, and the food is beyond exquisit. Do not look at other places, do yourself a favor and reserve a table here ASAP.

                            We sat on the upper floor which was slightly quieter and cooler. The food was superb- the bread and butter pudding with whiskey sauce was to die for. Great service.

                            With a group of eight We experienced a lively Atmosphere, Professional But Esther Strich Service and food in Need of being definitely improved. The Lamb ordered was of Poor Quality and the Plate was cold.
