Wienstein & Gavino's Ratings and Reviews
My first trip to Montreal and we weren't sure where to eat. Based on other reviews, we made an Open Table reservation at Weinstein & Gavino's. I'm not sure why, but the doorman at our hotel said we should try to sit downstairs (instead of upstairs). We did and it was great. I'm gluten-free and had probably the best GF pasta of my life (penne with pesto sauce). My partner who is not GF, had a veal dish which she said was excellent. Our server, Billy, recommended an Italian red wine which was very good. All in all, Weinstein & Gavino's was a great find for us and I highly recommend it.
Went for New Year’s Eve, what a disappointment. VERY limited offerings, and my $50 filet was the worst possible cut imaginable. Disappointed with the evening. Hate putting bad things online, but it was just a poorly executed, organized and hosted event. We left very disappointed and upset with the night.
Came here recently for dinner. We started with the Italian sausage appetizer. The sausage was good and the grilled peppers were also good. A large loaf of French bread is served to your table while you wait for your entrees. The bread was extremely fresh and the dipping oil with chopped parsley was also good.
We had the rib eye steak and lobster Mac and cheese for mains. This is where the meal stared to slide a bit for us. The Mac and cheese had a lot of lobster in it but it was very bland and did not taste like anything.
The rib eye was cooked to the correct temperature but I could not taste the rub that was supposed to be on it and there was a bit too much char on it. Sometimes had almost a burnt taste to it.
Our meal was also very rushed. In less than two minutes after finishing our appetizer our mains were placed in front of us. It is usually customary for restaurants to give you a few minutes to rest between courses.
This kind of reminded us a bit like Olive Garden. Would probably not return and would try a different Italian restaurant.
Not impressed!! We didn’t get our bread until meals almost over. Service slow. Very loud and not great ambiance. Had to pay extra forbrocolli after removing two vegetables from pasta. Asked for extra Parmesan and waitresss wanted 2$ for it. Cancelled it!! For a 300$ bill should not nickel and dime your guests.
The meal was good, however an extra for 2.50 when another pasta had the I same I gradients but because the meat sauce was ready and I'm vegetarian could not have that one, so I ordered the plain past with tomatoes sauce and extra olives......why 2.50 for a few olives......and the waiter did not tell me there was a charge for extras......the pasta was ok.....at least the price was right.....
Food and service was excellent, as it always is. However, there was a large group table near us that was very noisy, including one individual who refused to sit down, despite being asked to by the servers, and kept walking past our table and disrupting our meal. Additionally, we were seated right near the server's station and my chair was constantly being brushed as the servers walked past. It definitely took away from the experience and made us leave earlier than we would've liked to.
Merci
Seated promptly when we arrived on time for our reservation. People without reservations were waiting, so glad we used the reservation service. Multi-level restaurant like so many in that area; noise levels are right up there.
Lasagna was just ok. Ditto for the whole grain penne with the salmon & cream sauce. Teeny tiny portions of salmon. Taste was fine, but I was hoping for something recognizable as salmon pieces. Good wine selection by the glass. Glad the server told us that the Caesar salads were gigantic; we each had side salads instead which were fine.
Probably will not put this on my must return list. It was fine, but nothing overly special.
The ambience of the restaurant was nice and pleasant.
Our server never checked on us after we received our appetizers as he was never to be seen to catch his attention. We did not receive bread as well as it looked like every single table had bread.
We also waited 45-50 minutes for our main courses (risottos) and were extremely patient as we did not want to cause a fuss. It was only then that it became quite upsetting when we tasted our risottos and it was just bland unfortunately.
We may give it another chance, but it was just a tough experience for us.
