The food was delicious and we had a table in front of a roaring wood fire, which was very pleasant. (Other tables may have been chilly.) We also had great service.
My fiancé and I absolutely loved everything about The White Horse Tavern!
Classic New England elegance. I am fortunate to live up the street from this iconic restaurant, and it never disappoints. My husband had the chowder and the steak frites, one of his favorites, and i had the lobster bisque and roasted squash. Everything was perfectly prepared. I look forward to many more dinners...next to the fire...this winter.
The food and service here is very good and very consistent. Great atmosphere.
Upside -Really liked overall feel of place and had good drinks. Downside, food was only passable. Crab cakes too salty and on the lobster mac and cheese the lobster was over cooked.
Maureen, First and foremost, I would like to apologize for the dissatisfaction with your Crab Cakes and Lobster Mac and Cheese. We always strive to make every dish perfect every time but on occasion we do miss the mark and for that I am sorry. First time experience. Food and service were awesome. Would definitely go back. If you visit Newport this is a must do. Oldest restaurant in the USA.
Great holiday meal for a memorable Thanksgiving
Kevin the waiter was excellent, answered questions well and advised on options for the holiday meal.
Food was excellent and portions appropriate but not overwhelming.
We went for thanksgiving dinner, we were seated on the 2nd floor. It was very dark. I left my phone flashlight on so I could read the menu and see what I was eating. I am in my forties so it’s not totally a vision thing.
Dinner was good, I just couldn’t see it. Too bad out $42 a plate turkey dinner didn’t come with a piece of pumpkin pie .
We paid $10 for the smallest piece of pie I’ve ever seen.
Won’t be back , the idea was better than the experience.
Alyee, Thank you for taking the time to review White Horse Tavern. As I am sure you are aware our building is historic in nature. It became a Tavern back in 1673, nearly 350 years ago. We do try to pay homage and respect to the historical aspect of our Tavern which includes the lighting. We had a very enjoyable meal and family reunion here the night before thanksgiving. It is our second time at this restaurant and we would definitely come back again upon our next visit to Newport !
The food was outstanding, the crispy duck specifically was honestly one of the best dishes I’ve ever had. Sarah, our server has a great sense of pairing and recommended a cab that paired perfectly. We will be back.
Wonderful dinner, great steak. Beef Wellington good. Just wish creme brûlée was plain, not pumpkin.
The host and wait staff were not friendly.
The dishes were unusual but not the quality or level we expected
My partner and I celebrated our anniversary at the White Horse Tavern and had such a lovely time. The food was wonderful (I had the scotch egg and it was amazing)! The service was perfect- attentive but not intrusive. Pacing was also excellent- we never felt rushed but weren’t ever waiting too long. Definitely would recommend for special occasions and the regular get together!
My husband and I dined there yesterday for our 18th wedding anniversary. My husband asked our waitress, Sara to snap a picture of us to commemorate the event. She refused and said she was too busy. It would have taken her less than a minute. She then provided us with very poor service ( she didnt ask us about dessert after we completed our entree). Luckily, her coworker, Ben was very nice and took our picture and our dessert order. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant. It was definitely overrated in food quality, and the service was sub-par. I will not go there again.
I am incredibly disappointed to hear about your experience regarding the service. In saying that I will be speaking to your server directly about the importance of such things as taking a moment to take a quick picture for you and offering the dessert menu. I also noticed your comment about the quality of the food. Would you be able to provide me with a little more detail on what you did not care for? Was very excited to check out this spot, as I had read that it was one of the oldest taverns in the country!! Everyone we encountered was extremely pleasant, our waitress was fantastic, and we had a great meal. The overall atmosphere was so charming; I absolutely loved each room and the historic feel behind it. Can’t wait to come back!
Amazing appetizers! Would recommend this place to everyone
The food was excellent but the service outstanding. Keith started 3 weeks ago yet seemed to have served there for years. Lovely and knowledgeable. All his suggestions after requesting were perfect and made for the best dining experience in Newport. He also told us ghost stories !
Lovely place, great food, amazing service :)
I got the lobster mac and cheese - amazing!
This restaurant is amazing. The food was fantastic and our server, Ben, was very attentive. I must've put the that we were celebrating our anniversary when I made the reservation, because they brought out complimentary champagne to celebrate. I had the buttermilk chicken sandwich with truffle fries which were AMAZING! We sat outside, I assume due to COVID and since it was really warm out. I would've wanted to sit inside if possible due to the structure and history, but I am just glad we got to go.
outstanding food, service, and everything, great place !
Best Food Ever, a bit pricey but it’s definitely worth it
Excellent birthday dinner and ambiance. We had a great visit. I only wish the waitress had known something about their drinks.
We loved the place and the environment, but the food is not that good.

Not what we expected given the reviews, poor service and food quality has dropped. Dessert was fine but cold. Overpriced and the dining area was dirty and no candle on your table if not the main room. We’re new in town not idiots.

Our waiter was absolutely amazing. He told us spooky stories about the restaurant’s ghosts. It was awesome.
We ordered the lobster Mac and cheese. Great portion of lobster in it and it was so good I was weeping tears of joy. Gonna dream about that
We had a lovely evening. The staff was extremely attentive and aware of keeping good social distance. The restaurant acknowledged that we were celebrating an anniversary with a complimentary glass each of prosecco; that was a nice surprise!
Had a delightful time. Delicous food, excellent recommendations, timely service.
excellent meal, great service. I would recommend for sure.
Excellent food and outstanding service - Summer was wonderful.
LOVE this place. Beef Wellington is to DIE for. Also got the large shellfish sampler and French onion toast. The bread with honey butter was fantastic. Highly recommend!
I was told it’d be a nice cozy evening by the fireplace on a cold rainy day for our first visit to White Horse but fireplace doesn’t come on until November. It was drafty near window and lights went out 2x but food was fantastic. I got the beef Wellington, the fan favorite I was told. My husband said his short ribs were fatty. My drinks were great. And overall I loved it for a special occasion as it was our priciest meal of the week.
Everything was excellent and the prices were terrific as well. Will be back.
Our server Tim was exceptional. The whole dining experience was perfect for my parents' 50th anniversary.
This restaurant was on our vacation to-do list. The history attracted us here. Reserving a table was easy. We arrived and were seated right away. Our dining area was quaint and quiet which I thoroughly enjoyed. The staff was friendly but not overly talkative. The food came out promptly and it was tasty. I enjoyed the ambiance and will most definitely visit again.
Excellent pub fair in a cozy, quiet setting in downtown Newport.
The food was amazing. Great experience!!
Only thing I was somewhat disappointed with, was the food was not hot. It was almost room temperature. Other than that the place is lovely.
Very good! There was a mix up with our reservation time. Open table had 7pm. They had 630. They were able to accommodate no issue! Scotch eggs really good, pork belly app very good not your typical pork belly it was amazing. I got the beef wellington, cooked perfectly to MR ! Definitely reccomend.
Food was great, a little on the high side on prices, but both service and atmosphere very very good@
The food was excellent! The reputation of the Beef Wellington is well-deserved. One of our party had a vegetarian meal which looked delicious and they thoroughly enjoyed. Service was efficient with just the right amount of attention.
