Loved this place and the people and the swordfish was best we ever had - clam chowder in clear broth was great too
A wonderful historic restaurant in Newport. The food for the most part is very good we go here a couple of times a year always enjoy ourselves. My swordfish was a little dry, I liked it much better the last time I had it here. It was a little dry and not very flavorful. It was supposed to have olives, capers and tomatoes and had one or two of each. My husband liked his duck and the dessert was great, coconut/almond ice cream in a shell. We will return, I won't get swordfish again.
Food was wonderful but pricy. Service was very good.
If you like historic, dark, romantic, candles lit next to a classic old fashioned….this is your spot. Yes we’re only in Newport a few nights, so the draw to be near the water brought us to Bowen’s the first night. (Fabulous) But this place is special. Go early for a drink at the old bar. Order the Beef Wellington. It’s as outrageous as you’d expect. The duck, equally delish. The pate appetizer and lobster bisque were divine. Enjoy!
Amazing experience for our anniversary. Our server, Tim, went above and beyond to make our night extra special. The beef wellington was incredible. Highly recommend.
Touristy and the beef Wellington
Overall good food with decent
ambiance, that being the house itself.
The initial greeting was flat and unremarkable. Our table was in a tiny room that felt closed in and unimpressive.
Our entree presentation left a lot to be desired with a plop and leave attitude of the food runner.
Our waiter Tim did an exceptional job throughout the entire meal.
Our server James was outstanding. Also the meal was divine and did not disappoint! We loved dining in this magical historic place.
We were attracted to this restaurant for our anniversary because of its history and reputation. It did not disappoint. The beautifully maintained colonial building is delightful. The service was great and the food was excellent. The wedge salad was crunchy and delicious. I highly recommend the duck. This delicious dish had a generous portion of perfectly cooked tender duck breast with truffle cream sauce and el dente root vegetables . The scallops were wonderful. And the creme brûlée was the perfect finale.
Food was great. My dessert was just ok
I’d go back!
Ambiance wonderful. Beautiful old tavern atmosphere. Lovely staff. Food very good
The lobster bisque is the best I’ve had in years! Absolutely delicious.
The White Horse Tavern is off the charts. The food was fantastic. Great cocktails. Service was impeccable. We had the grilled swordfish and the steak frites. Cooked to perfection. Highly recommended.
The beef wellington was the best I've ever had.
We love old taverns because they remind use of the UK.
The best truffle fries I've ever had! Steak/frites was very good. Duck was done in a way different than I've ever experienced with a creamy sauce which was a gamble but worked well. Noticeably short-staffed with very stressed wait staff but our waitress was still attentive. Ambiance is dark, would go more for the historical appeal than romance.
The ambiance, service and food were excellent! The Beef Wellington was the best!
The scallops with corn pine were to die for. Best in Newport!
This was my first time at the tavern. The ambiance was delightful, staff was very knowledgeable about the history. Our meals were perfectly cooked and delicious. We also enjoyed 2 different desserts with coffee. Complimentary Prosecco after dinner as we were celebrating our first wedding anniversary was a nice touch
It’s like stepping back in time to a friendlier place, the finest food and drink in an historic restaurant.
We enjoyed the oysters, wedge salad, beef wellington & dessert (key lime & brownie) everything was delicious & great service- perfect place for date night in Newport!
We were pleased with the server and the quality of the food. However, we were extremely displeased with the receptionist. She first seated us at a high top table in a closed bar on the third floor with a view of the kitchen. We were told this was “Jackie O’s favorite table.” I think not. We, of course, refused to be seated at such an unacceptable table, especially since the restaurant wasn’t that busy. Consolation prize was a table in a closet of a room off one of the main dining rooms. This tavern is touted as one of the most romantic dining spots on Newport. We did not find this to be at all true.
Well worth the walk!! This historic location is so warm and inviting. On a main road but feels intimate when I side.
Our server Sue was exceptional!! She was attentive, fun, and customer focused. Covid has been hard on the service industry so seeing people like Sue and those behind the scene working hard to make this a great experience is heart warming. The gentleman who filled water glasses was on it. We never had to ask for more water.
Food was delicious!!!! I had mushroom risotto and I made myself stop. OMG!! Partner had the chicken and it was delicious as well.
Really a great evening!!
We were there for a birthday celebration. Two of us had the duck which was great. I had salmon which was also great. My friend had the Beef Wellington which was overcooked although she asked for medium. That was our only disappointment as it was also the most expensive dish. Otherwise the food was great and service excellent.
Atmosphere was very good. The tables were spaced out well.
Food was delicious. Server was exceptional.
Service was a bit on the slow side due to a staff shortage. However,
We had a wonderful time at the White Horse Tavern. Our waitress was excellent. I had lobster bisque for an appetizer which was delicious. I had swordfish for dinner and it was amazing. My husband enjoyed a steak dinner. We had some good cocktails. Overall we had a wonderful dinner at this most historical restaurant. The restaurant was very clean, and there was good spacing between tables.
Not my first trip here. The waiter this time is best described as surly. It was nearly comical if it didn't make the experience less pleasant. The food was good. Table was good upstairs. Was he trying to be ironic or is "gruff" a deliberate matchup for this old establishment. Mysterious but I would go back.
Charming atmosphere and nice menu that reminded us of the taverns at Williamsburg, but with service that absolutely ruined the evening and had us just short of walking out. Would strongly recommend skipping over this restaurant for a few months until they can figure out their staffing.
I've had Beef Wellington from California to Chicago to NY and White Horse Tavern has the best Beef Wellington I ever had. The wine list is perfect. Service was excellent. I enjoyed wearing a jacket to dinner.
Upstairs very warm. Food excellent. Wine list excellent. Service very good. VERY loud.
Excellent tavern restaurant. We had great service and everyone enjoyed their dinner from the appetizers to the desserts! Highly recommend!
It was a wonderful experience. The food, service and ambience were top shelf. Our waiter was friendly, funny and engaging. I would absolutely return.
Wonderful evening and delicious food. Great wine list.
We hadn’t been to Newport in 5 years and were so happy to visit Newport & The White Horse Tavern once again!
The ambiance, food & service is always impeccable! We had a very enjoyable dining experience!
We loved the historic atmosphere of the tavern, even including our slightly tilting table on the 450 year old floor. We enjoyed thinking of all the people who ate there through the years.
Our mains were scallops and duck, both done very nicely. The duck had a wonderful selection of veggies, not the normal steamed broccoli. My one complaint was the fois gras was good but minuscule, barely two bites, on a large piece of toast.
We had excellent service and enjoyed chatting with neighboring tables. There was a good crowd all night long on a Tuesday.
We are visiting Newport and we love dining at the White Horse. The food is outstanding and we love the historicity of the restaurant.
It’s a wonderful restaurant.
Cannot say enough about this restaurant!!! We were greeted with such a warm welcome and Keith our server was exceptional. In these times when the hospitality industry is suffering, he is a true professional and his warm welcoming was so refreshing. We hope that that the industry improves for all of those affected by the decline in staff and to servers like Keith, your presence spoke volumes about your true self. We are grateful to all of you and to all of those at White Horse Tavern.
Now the food- OUTSTANDING!!! Keith was very helpful in describing the selections and everything was done to perfection.
The tomato and burrata salad was so fresh and the Lobster Bisque was delicious!!
The salmon and the swordfish were done perfectly and the accompaniments were also fresh and delicious.
We look forward to our return and thank you again!!!
It was a charming historic inn. The salads and soup were amazing we didn’t get full dinners because it was late in the evening. We were not to thrilled with the charcuterie tray, cold pulled pork is not very appetizing.
I’m a regular at The White Horse very disappointing this time. Chicken was completely dried out abs tough. The faro was so salty I couldn’t eat it. Appeared it was cooked earlier in day and warmed before serving.
Service was excellent. Due to staffing no outdoor dining which is disappointing since it’s my preference!
Great visit again! The staff, food & atmosphere are always excellent. Tim, our waiter this time, made our (birthday celebration) experience great.
