My wife and I had dinner at the University City location. We were probably a little spoiled (having had lunch the day prior in the Wayne, PA location -- which was extraordinary in every way). This location was a disappointment (by comparison), but overall a very good experience. We were crowded into a small room with too many people (despite having reservations for 2), and the service staff seemed a little overwhelmed. However, they were very friendly and apologetic for anything they forgot or were slow to deliver. The food was very good, and all in all a nice experience. Most of the restaurant is not nearly as crowded as the room we were placed in, so I think most would have a much better experience.
This is a unique and fun restaurant (in some beautiful brownstone buildings) with its pervasive dog theme. The food is very good as is the service, for the most part. The only unusual thing about our dining experience was that the waitress brought us our check without asking if we were interested in dessert. We were, but wouldn't have had the opportunity to order it if we hadn't asked. Overall, still a very good experience. Great fresh food, locally sourced. (Get the Kennett Square mushroom soup!) Everyone in our party of six had only positive things to say. Two thumbs up.
Great dog theme in every room! So fun and elegant!
Delicious food, attentive services. Lovely decor. Wish I had more rhubarb compote on my french toast it was so delicious. Loved the coffee cake bites as a complimentary appetizer
One of my favorite restaurants in Philly! I’ve come here a few times and always enjoy whatever I get. The Tuna BLT is amazing and the desserts are to die for! The entire restaurant is so interesting with all of the decor. A must go if you are on UPenn’s campus - but make sure to make a reservation!
Great food, extremely good desserts, fun atmosphere and incredible service!!
I'm not one to leave negative or bad reviews, as I have worked in the restaurant industry for a number of years. However, the service that we received was subpar, at best. We had two different servers throughout the night who went MIA for the majority of our meal. Our appetizers came out cold, and 45 minutes later, not to mention the fact that they served me RAW, uncooked beef in the Cheeseburger Sliders. Disgusting. The entree's were decent, but not worth the money. The ambiance is great for outdoor seating.
The personnel at the acceptance was incredibly unpolite. I had reserved a table for my birthday, they first told me i had to wait to have everyone there to be seated and at that point the tables outside were all filled and they said i would have to wait 45 minutes for a table. I made them notice i had a reservations and they responded, annoyed, "Well, everyone has a reservation here!". So they accept more reservations than spots available and they tell you as if you were stupid not to think about it before. We decided to take a table inside to avoid waiting, but at this point they told us that the happy hour prices were only available at the tables outside... in short, terrible experience, will make sure to never go back.
Great food, authentic style, great choice for business meetings or for friends getting together.
Excellent cuisine, lovely atmosphere, good service. Will be back. Highly recommended!
Very nice place on most accounts.food was more the adequate but not exceptional. Good location, essentially on Penn campus.Cose to hotels.
Everything was really good...loved the Dirty Dog Martini. The cauliflower hummus was a bit bland...but that could just be me. My only recommendation would be to include more vegan options.
Great cocktail selection, great food, great service - thanks Phil! We tried a few different drinks and all were crafted beautifully. I had the flank steak special for dinner and it was out of this world. If I lived in Philly this would be my new spot for sure. All this greatness in a place that isn’t stuffy or pretentious, just casually awesome.
My fourth experience. White Dog meanders through, maybe, three buildings with step-up/stepdown floors. It is further has expanded it's size and we ate in what must have been a "back stairway" the was new, bright and airy [mostly]. Getting in or out of the restaurant can be time consuming with 1-person wide halls. Still, it is well worth going for the food [which is really why you go] and once seated, snuggle into your seat and forget about the rest of the space.
Fantastic food, especially the chocolate haze dessert. The eggs are cage free, which is always a plus at a restaurant. Great atmosphere and service.
Brunch was delicious. I have been to White Dog several times and the food and service is consistently great.
Their bottomless brunch is great for big groups and super good! They really do have the best burger in Philly! I always get an egg on it during brunch to make it more “brunchy”
Always delicious. Wait staff always courteous. Good selection of drinks. Hearty portions. Never leave hungry!
Super cute and funky. Service was great. Got the tofu scramble, it was delish.
A great place for a lunch. Bolognese was surprisingly delicious. Only need the 1/2 portion. Really enjoyed Elaine (server). She was upbeat and fun. Good distraction from an otherwise stressful day. Easy walk from CHOP.
Mushroom soup is great. I tried the pork special, it was a little dry. I've had better meals there. You should bring back the mini burger sliders. Those were fantastic.
Service was good for a holiday. The Bloody Mary and the food was average at the best. Very surprised. We had bunch in January and everything was outstanding. Blame on the holiday crowd.
Came here for brunch on Easter Sunday. Made a reservation, showed up early, and got sat right away. The decor is very cute (dogs everywhere) and the food was delicious. They give you fun little bites (lemon poppyseed cake and brown sugar cake) to try as a starter. The bellini flavors were delicious especially the passion fruit. We ordered bacon (somewhat pricey but worth it) and the challah french toast and churros waffles. Everything was good without being overtly sugary. Would definitely come back and try lunch or dinner!
Horrible food, cold as ice special of the day! Pre-cooked? Really disappointing and I was embarrassed to have taken another couple there. This place has really gone downhill as Bernie’s and others in the same block are now better. Feel like they are just doing business on reputation.
Great place for brunch. Lovely interior design with a fun dog theme. Food was great very tasty and service was attentive and friendly. Highly recommend. Good for brunch and get-togethers.
The decor in the place is great. There are different themes in every room so you never know what you're going to get. The bread that they give you as a starter is more of loaf but it is really delicious and moist. The food is outstanding and the portion are good. I got the Kennett Square Omelette with potatoes. It was delicious and the potatoes were cooked nicely.
Food was tired. Waiter was robotic. Zero passion for food or service.
Our meal was amazing! We really appreciated the quiet atmosphere which contributes to the elegance of the setting. The lamb bolognese was "to die for".
You need to either train or fire your Hostess. She was rude and made us feel like a reservation meant nothing to her. We’re all in business and first impression is extremely important and you absolutely have the wrong front person. She has always been this way and is equally annoying on the phone. I’ll think twice before coming back. There are too many other restaurants in Philly that make you feel welcome.
Although I frequently go to the White Dogs now in the suburbs of Philadelphia it is always a treat t return to the original - it has a vibe that can't be duplicated and the experience very enjoyable including yummy food.
Nice experience overall. I hadn’t been to The White Dog in more than 20 years and it has still held up well. Only nitpick is they tried to seat our party of 2 at a minuscule table even though there were plenty of other options. They moved us though upon request so no big deal.
Celebrating a birthday, no one bothered us and it was lowkey as we wanted it to be
Very lovely farm to table lunch in university city.
Seated on time at 12 noon. Told waitress we wanted to place orders quickly because we had to get to class at 1:30. At 1:15, when we still had not been served, waitress apologized for delay and said we would have our food “in two minutes”. Food arrived at 1:25 and we told them to pack it to go. AWFUL EXPERIENCE.
Good experience as always. One of my favorite spots.
Great food. Loved the ambiance and the service was great!
Great! Wonderful business lunch experience.
I have been to White Dog Cafe many times. However I was very disappointed my experience this time around. I made a reservation which was smart on my part. Once we were seated it was so packed that it was uncomfortable. I also ordered an omelet that I have had many times. To my surprise there was no small side salad with it anymore, and I had only 5 home fries with my omelet. I was used to the generous amount they used to give along with the salad, it made the price of the omelet worth it. Our waitress was also not very attentive. Needless to say I was very disappointed, as I had brought my Grandmother here because she is a foodie and I thought she would love it. I will not be returning for awhile, there are many other amazing brunch places in the city.
The pork tenderloin was delicious, as was the burger! Will definitely be back.
