White Dog Cafe - University City Ratings and Reviews
The curried pumpkin soup was delicious and so were the Parmesan truffle fries. The waiter we had was very attentive. I got my main course and the fish was not fully cooked. I notified the waiter and he immediately took the plate and had the kitchen make a new one. When I received the new plate it actually tasted better than the first one. A manager came over and apologized for the undercooked fish and offered us a round of drinks/dessert. We declined because we were pretty full. I will say, in my opinion, some of the plates are over priced. Overall is wasn’t a bad experience, just too pricey.
I was disappointed with the quantity of the food, considering the price. It wasn't bad, but the portions were skimpy and I just felt that it was overpriced. The brussel sprouts were cold. The salmon portion was tiny. The chicken was slightly overcooked. On the other hand, they were very accommodating as far as supplying delicious gluten free rolls, and the service was perfect.
White Dog never disappoints. I love that it is seasonal fare, especially in the fall which is my favorite time of year. I had the rainbow trout with cauliflower puree, roasted cauliflower and brussels sprouts and bacon lardons. It was wonderful. Fish perfectly cooked, vegetables roasted to perfection. I appreciated finding a good option that was lower-carb, as that is a dietary restriction I have. Will go again!
I used to come here all the time when I lived in West Philly. However, since I left, every visit has left me more and more saddened about what used to be a great place. The food is still good and our server was great. The rest of the customer service was AWFUL. Everyone from the front desk to the many servers swirling around. I think one of the managers was on the floor as well. No smiles, no greetings, no courtesy while we were waiting for our reservation time. I literally had one server push me aside to go up the stairs by the bar. Shame really but I won’t be back.
The service was excellent. Atmosphere pleasant. The ahi tuna salad was unusual & delicious-- Brussels sprouts, cabbage , broccoli--raw or blanched & crunchy, with a creamy dressing, topped with rare ahi tuna. Fresh warm rolls with butter... BUT-- $29!!! A bit pricey for a lunchtime salad entree.
We went to this place for lunch. It was busy but our reservation was handled great and we had a table within 5 minutes of walking in. The decor was really cool with the dog theme and the waiter we had was great. The food was good, but a little bit too expensive for it not be amazing. The mushroom soup is amazing, but the blackened shrimp tacos (which were not blackened, so assuming it was a flavor profile), were just okay. I would still recommend the restaurant though, as all the food was good and service, decor and location were excellent!
First time at the White Dog Cafe in the Philly University City area. Outstanding food and decor (just don't go if you dislike dogs). We had 12:30 Lunch reservations in the Dining Room. The place was packed. The dining room was quite loud but we noticed other smaller rooms that would likely be quieter. That was the only negative, but overall a great place to dine.
I had dinner with some special friends on a busy Saturday night. We like White Dog for the atmosphere and for sentimental reasons since we used to go there 30 years ago. It's still fun from an atmosphere standpoint and for that reason I'll go back. The service that night, unfortunately, was terrible though. I realize it was busy but that's not surprising for a Saturday night. Our water glasses were usually empty, requested bar drinks never arrived, we were essentially never checked on. At one point a member of my table had to get up herself to fetch a fork from the station where all the silverware is kept because we couldn't get one otherwise. For the amount of money we know we're going to spend at White Dog, service needs to step up before loyal customers look for new places to dine.
We like the White Dog very much, and chose it to celebrate an anniversary. It was a Saturday night and crowded, which perhaps explains the sub-par service: no checks that our orders were OK, food delivered hurriedly and without eye contact, no bread served at our table, rarely saw our own waitperson. The food, as usual, was very good, and veggie-friendly.
Based on the price, the food did not compare to similarly priced restaurants. Felt the restaurant was taking advantage of a past reputation but faltering. Our experience prompted me to check to see if ownership had changed and It had in 2009. Our server was not good at service which became easier to understand why when we got our bill for 5 people and It had already included a 20% tip. We would not return.
My wife and I were celebrating a special evening that included her first time being allow to eat raw oysters. The 6 for $6 raw oysters during happy hour were a good size and very tasty. The $14 martinis were a little pricey, but that is expected when eating in the city. The Farm to Table dishes were very good. We will be back.
The space is very crowded and quite noisy, and it's a little pricey, but the food was surprisingly great. I had the carnitas cubano and it was tender and the perfect combination of salty and sweet and vinegary and a little spicy and the bread was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was delicious. My friend got the spicy lamb bolognese, which was hearty and flavorful. It was a very pleasant surprise.
My family and I ate at Whitedog for brunch Parents Weekend. The food and service was outstanding. I had the porridge which was delicious (if you like oatmeal/porridge), my daughter had the Waffles which were delicious and gave me a sugar rush and my husband had an egg dish which he also said was quite good. Service was on point. We will be back!
So many good choices on the menu. I had the pumpkin soup which is vegan, but don't let that fool you. It was full of sumptuous flavor. My colleague and I split the tuna melt which was a wise choice, given how big the portion was. The decor is as impressive as the food; I wish they would decorate my house! If you haven't tried this place, you must!
Basically a great place near U Penn. However, they are they are solidly inside the camp that adheres to this policy: "We'll seat you when your whole party is here." And that's with a reservation. I find this policy maddening, whenever I encounter it. It may maximize seat utilization, but it as the expense of establishing an adversarial relationship with the client immediately. This is a malady that afflicts restaurants that clearly have too many patrons than are good for them.
