White Dog Cafe - University City Ratings and Reviews
White Dog Cafe is one of my favorite restaurants for a slightly more leisurely lunch in University City. We were able to get in-and-out within 90 minutes. The food is delicious. We especially enjoyed the mushroom soup appetizer and the creme brulee dessert.
Was in Philly for the day with my gf and we looked online for some of the best brunch restaurants in the city. White Dog's menu was the most appealing so we made a reservation. We arrived early and were seated within 5 minutes. The restaurant is in a brownstone home so the atmosphere/layout is different. It works though. Diverse crowd. Service was good. Food was good. We both enjoyed what we got (Turkey Club and Omelet). Bottomless Mimosas and Sangrias are options for brunch. I'd definitely go again and I would recommend it to others.
Had brunch here for the first time in over 20 years.
The restaurant was very busy as usual and the service suffered from this unfortunately. We weren't in a rush so we didn't mind the slow service but others in the restaurant weren't as patient.
Our server was attentive, but not overly friendly. The food is good for brunch and the location and vibe are both wonderful.
Went here on a Friday night for my wife’s birthday with my brother in law visiting from Texas. Picked the restaraunt for It’s menu and ambience. The ambience was great, lots of nice little rooms and excellent decor with wonderful dog pics. The appetizers we ordered were meatballs, tuna and hummus. All of these were really really good. For the main course we ordered Ny strip and bass for me and my brother in law. My wife was smart and chose the mushroom bisque for main course which was again delicious. The odd thing is that the main courses the NY strip and bass were not good. They came out dry and did not taste fresh at all. The flavor was good but both the main courses felt as if they were old and had been sitting out for a while. I love steak and this was the first time ever that I left 50% of the steak untouched cause it was that bad. Trust me you don’t leave a 50 dollar steak untouched everyday. I talked to them nicely they said it was brought straight from the kitchen so I simply said “ it’s fine “ no point making a big deal. They gave us free dessert which was average for the cost if I actually had to pay.
So overall go here for their ambience which is great, their appetizers are awesome and their coffee is also very good.
It’s possible that their main courses that night were just off the mark but after coming home I found a few more reviews on yelp of people talking about their main course during dinner not being up to the mark. People did say breakfast and lunch are usually very good.
The decor is all dogs, all places. The menu has interesting choices at high prices. The execution does not match the hype. We were there for brunch with a party of 7. There weren't many other customers. My poached eggs were overdone, and the whole order had cooled to room temperature. The first serving of coffee was only slightly warmer, although the refills were hot. The weather was bad, and maybe this was an off day. But perhaps the regulars are there more for the atmosphere than the food.
The Mrs. ordered the scallops, and complained of every component of the dish being too salty. After tasting it myself I only noted the brussels sprouts as such, but they were EXTREMELY salty. Otherwise not a bad dish, but nothing noteworthy. I ordered the petite filets, and they too were only so so. I’d like to write this experience as the kitchen maybe having on off moment, so I won’t rule out another visit as we both loved the decor.
An interesting restaurant near Universities, with an eclectic clientel. Decor was friendly and topical. Food was excellent, with a good selection of local products. Service was first rate. Overall cost was a little pricey even considering that wine was half price on the day we attended. Definitely worth a visit
