White Dog Cafe - University City Ratings and Reviews
This was one of the worst dining experiences we have ever had. The waiter was abrupt, the food came cold and when we asked for it to be heated it took 20 minutes for it to be brought back. By then we had completely lost our appetite. Also my wife found hair in her dinner. I complained to the manager who apologized and did not charge us for the 'dinner.' Over the years we have had good experiences at the White Dog but we will probably never return to the University City location.
All good until dessert. They brought the coffee and espresso, but then it was 10 to 15 minutes until the desserts showed up. By then the coffee was cold and everyone was annoyed. Too bad. Having been here often this is a common feature. Pretty good overall but at least one dropped ball in terms of service nearly every time.
I really did enjoy the food but for the prices some of the food portions were very small. They really get busy and they don’t have a waiting area so the front entrance is very congested. When your seated the tables are really close together and you can barely have a conversation without hearing someone else talking over you from another table. If you there for just a lunch gathering I say go for it just don’t expect a romanticized outing.
Food was great, although a bit pricey for what it is. Unfortunately the server forgot to ring in one person's meal, and they didn't seem to hurry to fix the issue, the rest of the table was finished by the time he received it. They also forgot to bring the side of toast ordered for the baby.
We love the White Dog Café when in Philadelphia's University City neighborhood! It is a short walk from Amtrak, the Sheraton, the Hilton, Drexel, and Penn. Situated in a historic building on a charming street, the White Dog Café truly offers something for everyone. Jen was our outstanding server on a busy Friday at lunchtime, and she handled all of her tables deftly. We enjoyed a tofu scramble with a side of gratin mushrooms & a turkey sandwich with a side of butternut squash soup. Both were perfect. Beer & a specialty cold-brew-coffee-honey-and-root-beer non-alcoholic refresher washed it all down sweetly. Highly recommended!
Sort of glad they were out of my first two choices, since the petite fillet with cheezy tater totes and what I will call spicy pulled beef (actually brisket I think) was excellent. And half-price wine night didn't hurt either, so over-ordered on that as well. Colleagues seemed to enjoy their fish.
I was pleased to be able to get a table for our large group. The Waitress was effective in getting our orders and delivering the food in plenty of time for us to make it to our theater show. I was disappointed by the hamburger, which was done way more than medium rare, and the French fries which were overly salty and a bit stale. I was tasting them for hours after the meal. Fortunately, my wife was satisfied with the trout. Overall, I don't feel confident enough in the quality of the food to order a $46 NY strip steak, or the other more expensive entrees.
We had an awful server - very indifferent and slow. Our tip reflected our displeasure but there is no way a restaurant like this should allow such service. She was a young woman, long curly dark hair pulled back, wore glasses. We should have spoken to the manager.
Had a great dinner at the White Dog Cafe. Entrees were brought out a bit too soon (just a minute after getting the bread basket...) but were delicious. We got the duck, cod, and a striped bass special that everyone enjoyed seemed to enjoy along with a dessert to extend the dining time. Quirky decor in a converted row home make it a restaurant worthwhile checking out if in the University City area and looking for a nice dinner.
Lovely place with terrific food and friendly and efficient service. The Pork Belly Eggs Benedict were very nice. And we all enjoyed the half dozen deviled eggs appetizer but they should offer the jalapeño avocado deviled eggs by themselves. We could have eaten a dozen of those by themselves.
I took a friend to White Dog for a birthday brunch. We both liked that they offer bottomless mimosas. The food was great, its located on an adorable block. The interior is fantastic despite being a bit cramped. However, in our 2.5 hours there we only received 3 mimosas each despite paying for unlimited, and not because we drank slow. We requested refills several times, but often saw our waiter hovering around the hostess stand talking and we had to ask him several times before he actually gave us our refills. After paying the check (which I still tipped very generously despite the slow service) our waiter returned to top off our mimosas and commented that he would have topped them off more frequently had he known we would tip him so generously. We were pretty put off by that comment, and left our brunch sober (a first for us, especially coming from an establishment that offers unlimited drinks for a set price).
I would definitely recommend their food and dining here for the overall experience, as its a beautiful building on a great block with awesome choices for a foodie like myself. However, I don't suggest it as a "bottomless brunch" location. I would love to only blame our waiter, but I overheard neighboring tables that also partook in bottomless brunch with other waiters making the same complaints. They seem to be a bit stingy with their alcohol, and should probably stop offering unlimited alcohol specials.
White Dog remains a favorite of ours. We hadn't been in awhile and returned recently to celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary. It still has a great vibe. The food was very good, though my wife and I had one of those "honey they shrunk the portions" moments; it seemed like we received less of a good thing. For example, I ordered the Barnegat scallops and there were only two on the plate--okay, it did come with delicious pork bellies too, but still.... That said, the cheese board was outstanding, and the desserts are seasonal and wonderful. Service was very good, though we did feel a bit rushed through appetizers and the main course; the good news is the food arrived quickly, though a little too quickly which didn't leave much time to linger and talk over each course. We did make up for it over dessert and made that last. I don't think they were trying to rush us out the door but probably moving with alacrity during a busy time. Getting the balance right between moving too quickly and too slow over the course of the meal is a developed art, and they were just a bit off that night. All said, we'll be back. Still love White Dog; it's good for Philly and good for us.
Our family had a special dinner there to celebrate my promotion and our daughter's ballet performance at Penn. It was difficult to choose from the menu, as everything sounded excellent. We tasted each other's selections and had an array of beautiful fish, pasta, and salad, all cooked to perfection with real discrimination in the cooking techniques and accompaniments. Desserts were also excellent. I would recommend White Dog for a special occasion, or (if it's in your budget) anytime you want food cooked with care. It's an unpretentious place that will make you feel well taken care of and happy that you went!
We had an hour wait ! The hostess was not only extremely rude and condescending to the staff but was the same with the customers. All of the customers, while we were waiting forever, commented that she was rude and obnoxious. After that looonnnnnggg wait the food was mediocre. May want to think about getting a new hostess she tainted everyone’s whole experience. Have been going here for over 3 decades and worst experience I’ve ever had at a restaurant! Will definitely make me reconsider going here again!!!
