The food was so delicious. The drinks fantastic. Highly recommend for a nice night out or a special brunch.
It’s always a great experience...and one of my favorite bars!
The food is delicious here. Have been there 3 times in the last 3 months and would go there again in a heart beat!
We like this place and come here a lot. The food is always excellent, as is the service. The only slight negatives are that the menu is somewhat limited and some dishes can be quite small: the scallops, for example, are delicious but come with barely anything, so you need an extra side dish to make it a meal, in my opinion. My (adult) son commented that the halibut was the best fish dish he’d ever had! I’m getting it next time.
The service and the food was amazing! I highly recommend this place.
Good food. Good service. Would definitely reccomend.
Whisknladle is one of the best restaurants in San Diego due to the combination of excellent food, attentive service and great atmosphere. Chefs are creative with lamb. duck, fresh fish and unique pasta dishes. Steve is an excellent manager of the restaurant.
We are visitors from Canada and this is our favourite restaurant in all of SAN Diego. We had two visits on this trip and the second was to share the experience with our adult children who live in Vancouver, a city with an abundance of amazing restaurants. They loved it and commented that it was as good if not better than there favourites back home . I must say our server was amazing and the whole service team was excellent. Keep up the great work, and we will definitely be back next time we’re in town.
I have been coming to Whisknladle for years and the food is always great. On this visit, I found myself disappointed with some tweaks to the brunch menu. The egg dishes now come with a dressed mixed green salad instead of breakfast potatoes. However, the menu does not mention this salad and the server did ask if I wanted to upgrade to potatoes. The menu should clearly state all items that will arrive on my plate.
We loved everything about it but the food and especially the service were the best!
Awesome experience! From the moment we sat down to when we walked out, the service and ambience was ideal for a night out. Our server was knowledgeable of the wines and receptive to our likes/dislikes for our dinner. Every dish we ordered was delicious-the stars of the night were the mussels and bone marrow! Both were great to the last bite. We can’t wait to come back with friends and continue exploring the menu!
This was one of the best meals we have enjoyed anywhere, and the service was superb.
We had another wonderful dining experience here this year. The food and service were outstanding! Our server Kim went above and beyond our expectations. We will return!
Service is knowledgeable and polite. Food is creative and tasty. Pure quality.
Went to Whisknladle for a birthday night out--the service was terrific, the waiter read the opentable reservation and knew it was my husband's birthday, which was nice. the cocktails were really fresh and delicious, and all of the food was fantastic. Highly recommended for a nice night out.
I would suggest servers be more mindful of interrupting table conversation with "checking in" to see if everything is ok. This happens most everywhere unfortunately. If servers are not slammed they should be able to read their tables to know if there is a patron in "need".
I ate at Whisknladle when they first opened 10 years ago based on a F&W shout out and it was amazing. But I hadn't been to San Diego since then and wanted to go back since I am always impressed when a restaurant manages to stay successful for a decade - quite an impressive record. The braised lamb shanks were excellent and the server's recommendation of a Malbec to accompany it was spot on. But the marrow bones were a disappointment - not so much for the flavor, but for the value. Overall, a lovely meal, but not the best one I had during my brief visit to San Diego.
Great food, great wine and wonderful drinks. Whisknladle has been a reliable favorite for over ten years. Tried the crab tortellini. Yummy.
I love this restaurant! It's always fantastic - consistently great! Friendly service, delicious food that changes seasonally, and a fantastic wine and cocktail menu. The whole restaurant is basically a covered patio (plenty of heaters, don't worry) and you're surrounded by greenery everywhere. It's a lovely spot for a date, special occasion, or even a business meeting.
Very disappointed, it was my mother's bday so I thought after reading the reviews it was something special but we came hungry and left hungry! We ordered the steak dish that only accompaniment was about 10 chickpeas. Portions so small we decided just to skipped dessert altogether and just went somewhere else to continue our celebration. Drinks high also especially at lunch. $18 ins't cheap for lunch but I should feel a little full at least. If they are going to serve child size portions they should at least put some bread on the table. My daughter's burger was big and good. She had first tried to order and wanted the french toast but when she was told it was just 1 piece for $14 with NO bacon or anything with it, she opted for a burger. She is a petite 5"4 gal so doesn't need a lot of food and I thought it was sad the waitress felt she had to warn a petite girl it might not be enough food! You fill ripped when you have to go eat somewhere else. She lives in LaJolla and none of us would go back, to many other great places in LaJolla.
The food was fabulous. The crab and avocado salad was one of the best salads I’ve ever had. its an appetizer but perfect size for a smaller appetite if paired with another appetizer. Daughter and friend had pastas, both were happy! Husband had ahi tuna dish and loved it. Our server wasn’t the best, they were busy, we couldn’t tell if he was in a really bad mood or just weird. (?) I loved it so much I got the same salad the next day as carry out for dinner! (better than hotel food!)
The house made Pate with cheese and meat board appetizer was one of the most tasty I have ever had.
My wife and I had just arrived in La Jolla on a very rainy evening and drove right to the restaurant before checking in to our hotel. One thing we discovered is the banquette seating is a little uncomfortable. The chairs are great, but when I sat in the banquette, I was about four inches lower, which made the table height strange..... something for them to consider. We split the burrata flatbread, the caesar salad and the nettle pasta. All were good. Service was attentive; the room was busy but not loud. Definitely will recommend and return someday.
I should set this up by saying we were a party of five adults. We are also well traveled, as one member of our group is a chef and two of us are in the travel, food and leisure industry.
Prior to walking over to Whisknladle, we had drinks and apps on the outdoor patio just off the lobby floor at La Valencia Hotel. The sunset was beautiful.
At Whisknladle we sat in the covered outdoor area. The ambiance was nice. Our server was busy juggling multiple tables, but managed to keep an eye on us. She was very good.
Before we placed our food orders, we ordered cocktails and a bottle of wine (the wine was under $100). One member in our party didn't drink alcohol. We had decided at the beginning of the evening to share family style at both venues. We all wanted to sample a little bit of everything. We found the food at Whisknladle to be very good, but a little skimpy in some areas.
Apps: The grilled Spanish Octopus and the Charred Bone Marrow appetizers were excellent. However, the Mussels (Fermented Chili Paste, Garlic Butter & Smoked Paprika Potato Chips (gf)) were grossly over cooked and very dry.
As for our entrees:
The "Pithivier" (Duck, Foie Gras, King Trumpet Mushrooms, Parsnip Puree & Chicken Jus) was outstanding.
The Dungeness Crab Tortellini (with Nduja, Squid Ink Soffrito, Chili Oil & Marjoram) were terrific. I am not sure ten (10) moderately sized tortellini are enough to be filling as an entree for one person. Since we were sharing, it worked out.
The Seared Scallops (Pork Belly, Carrot Puree, Baby Brussels Sprouts, Apple Cider Jus & Mustard Frill (gf)) were good, but $34.50 for three scallops is quite spendy. Why can some restaurants give you five or six for that price and others...not. I think we all know the answer to that...
We did buy a "sixer" for the kitchen. And, we greatly enjoyed and appreciated it when one of the guys on the kitchen crew came out to say thanks. Best $6 we could ever spend.
Best food in La Jolla
This restaurant is such a gem! We were visiting from the east coast celebrating my birthday. The food was amazing and the waiter very knowledgeable and passionate about food which we so appreciate.
A five star for foodies!
Husband: "Best scallops I've ever eaten" (and we live in Maine).
Me: "LOVED the duck and fois Pithivier- have never seen it before and am so glad I gave it a try".
Nothing notable about the atmosphere, but it was quiet enough to have a conversation with ease. Server was friendly and helpful, without pretension or hovering.
Great service as always
Food and the service our waitress provided were great. Cheese plate and bolognese are a must. Bartender was arrogant and wouldn’t even look at us to take a drink order. Once at our table our drink order took 20min. Not what you would expect for a restaurant with such a high yelp rating.
Had a very nice Sunday Brunch..the menu offered a great combination of breakfast and lunch items..the pancakes were excellent as were the drinks. Would our new fav for LaJolla.
Flatiron steak was severely undercooked. Sea bass was nothing special. Caesar salad was very good. Expected more considering the reviews and cost.
Cocktails, appetizers, and main dishes were great! Service was spot on! A thoroughly enjoyable meal. Plenty to eat.
Fantastic start to finish. Food and service was perfect! We had a wonderful evening. Thank you!
Amazing service and food!!!!
Food was outstanding. 4 of us for dinner - one of us is vegan - all of us happy :-) Prawn and calamari pasta was oh so yummy! House made pasta makes all the difference. Desserts were also delish! The service left a lot to be desired. Specifically, our main waiter seemed to be new or really off his game. We were there on a Thurs night and the restaurant was 3/4 full so not sure if he had too many tables. His timing was totally off as far as ordering each course (including wine) and coming back to check up. The servers who handled the actual serving of the food and refilling water glasses were excellent - seemed that they were trying to help our waiter out and take up his slack. These things happen - and the food was so good that we will definitely go back for another try.
The food was excellent and the patio dining was perfect! Fantastic recommendations from our server as well.
Best brunch I've had in a long time delicious preparation of hashbrowns, great fruit bowl and decadent bacon. Pork belly has also fantastic. Sparks will fly.
We really enjoyed our restaurant week dining experience at Whisknladle. Unlike many restaurants, they allow you to choose 3 courses from their regular menu. We enjoyed the yellow tail crudo, mussels, seared scallops and sea bass. All were perfectly prepared and we plan to enjoy again. The broth from the mussels was one of the best we've had. Dessert just put the meal(s) over the top. Our server was excellent and anticipated our needs before we could even ask.
