I really wanted to enjoy this restaurant more than I did. To begin with the menu is not easy to read and understand exactly what you're ordering or eating. Perhaps too trendy/hipster for our us, but we just had a difficult time deciding what to order, selections were just too wordy. The was good but I never had that feeling that I would return. Good to try but not impressive.
The service here can't be beat. All of the servers were attentive without being annoying. We started off with a complimentary cheese puff that was wonderful and moved on to the flatbread of the night. Everything was good. The only downside was that the temperature became extremely hot after a neighboring table requested the heater, so you definitely need to negotiate how to handle such situations.
Went with friends for dinner. Excellent and large Caesar salad, tasty salmon, juicy pork chop, interesting and very good duck pith ivied ( a kind of meat pie). Butterscotch budino was a rich and tasty dessert. Good cocktail and wine selection. Overall a lovely neighborhood place
Ambience and menu was so delightful, we made a res for the following night before the first course was served. Too many good menu options to make just one choice!
Server had intimate knowledgeable of menu and custom cocktails, so was able to steer us in the right direction. She (Kristen) was professional and appropriately attentive. (And recognized and served us on night 2, which was equally excellent.)
Great craft cocktails with the big square ice cubes. Superb food met California-excellence standard.
In the past, I really enjoyed coming to Whisknladle and bringing work guests to the place for dinner. Always great food, nice outside experience, and usually friendly service. The last couple of times I've come here, I've noticed the quality of the food and service have both declined. This last time, the service was shockingly bad, with us waiting 10-15 min time and again for drinks, the food, water, and so on. I was embarrassed to have my guests from overseas have to wait in this way, and I had to apologize for the service to them.
The food was reasonably good, but there are better places to go like Herringbone or Nine-Ten where apologies aren't needed. A shame, but I won't be back.
It is not an extensive menu so I knew it would be good. Talked to waiter/Sergio (perfect service...attentive without annoying ) and he said that they don't even have a freezer...everything is prepared fresh. The venue is intimate and a bit romantic with all the candles on the wall and tables but honestly I would go back anytime I had the opportunity. You won't be sorry.
We celebrated my mother’s 70th birthday here, from drinks (fizzy pop - thanks to our waiter for helping me choose) to the yellow tail appetizer to my pasta delish! Joy was felt around the table - the carr of each dish was evident - mom loved her salmon, hubs enjoyed his chicken - we will be back it was lovely!
Bad table-why have a table that seats two... Side by side facing another couple table. That will just never be fun. That only works looking out at the street.
$125. Two entrees-Tough pork chop with no steak knife. Lamb pasta was ok, except the trumpet mushroom stems werent trimmed. It was like mushrooms on the hard stem of asparagus. Ruined the dish. Charcuterie-one type of meat/sausage, two types of cheese, and none of it particularly special..., I can do that good at home. You try to make it cute... But all that little stuff with giant bread and no utensils... Like spreader or cheese cutter. Then I have to ask for clean utensils for the entree. Two cocktails, actually pretty tasty although the Sazerac would be only a 7/10. So that was it for a poor table, ok but overbearing wait staff (except our terrible table) and a special markup for minimum wage for $125. Also reduction in tip since this is California and you're making minimum wage plus. Go practice somewhere else where you make $2.25 then come back and try again.
This is a restaurant/company that got a great reputation... Then stopped owning it after that. I won't go back.
Celebrated my birthday today and had such a great experience with my friends! Thanks Steve for the personalized menu and going above and beyond with the desserts and drinks! This is one of my favorite farm-to-table restaurants and recommend this location for your next celebration.
This was a serious disappointment. We had been here a few years ago and had enjoyed it so had really looked forward to our return visit. We had mentioned it was a special occasion on our reservation but that was never acknowledged. Our server was missing in action for most of our visit. We had to actually get up from the table and go to the bar to get a glass of wine because couldn't track him down. The support staff was hustling and the manager ended up comping the wine but frankly the food was mediocre to downright bad. The soup for a starter was pretty good but it went downhill fast after that. The scallops were so over salted it was ridiculous (and we love salt). The frites were good but the steak was pretty awful. Cannot possibly recommend and we will not be going back.
One hostess was great, but the other was fairly rude. The waiter was nice enough, but not very conversational and service was sparatic. My biggest complaint is with the food. The steak, ordered medium rare was extremely rare and lacking flavor. The shrimp pasta was also very bland. Everything was extremely over priced and the wine list was a complete joke. The by the glass options were generic and expensive and no bottle options were available. Overall not a good experience.
I was very pleased with my meal, and it was more than what I expected. I've walked this place a couple of times and finally went there, with, and at the suggestion of a friend on a Sunday night. I anticipated get a dish with scallops and a cocktail. But, after speaking with the waiter, they had Prime Rib on the menu, so I went for it. I could have sworn the waiter said it was a 10 oz. prime rib. But, what I got was definitely bigger. Whether I was mistaken about what I heard or not, it was a great prime rib. One of the best I've had. Perfectly media raw, a good amount of fat, but not an excessive amount. Also came with a whole potato, a horseradish sauce and green beans. I was more than full by the end of dinner. We also got mussels for a starter, which were done very well. I topped things off with a cocktail and a barrel-aged stout. Had a nice night there and would go back again in the future. Waiter was attentive, not too noisy and it was clean.
This was the best dining experience ever. The owner and his staff made this an extraordinary evening with the best food and service that we have ever experienced. The food was fantastic and the services was extremely and attentive. The atmosphere was warm, cozy and very inviting. My wife, son and I will be definitely dining at Whisknladle again!
Hands down the best restaurant (also my favorite) in San Diego! I've been coming here for almost a decade now (to celebrate special occasions or just to gather with friends/family) and the restaurant continues to impress me with its creative/delicious offerings and excellent service. This restaurant is the standard that I measure every other restaurant against when I travel. Not only is the service above and beyond what you would expect...it's the attention to details that always makes me smile. For instance, the other night when we had dinner (table of four), my friend got up to use the restroom and placed his napkin on his chair. Our server noticed and immediately replaced it with a fresh/new napkin. I cannot say enough good things about the restaurant and its management/staff...they truly make for an unforgettable and tailored experience each and every time!
A very attentive service staff with quite a few gems on the menu that we would back again for - especially the mussels, scallops and flatbread. My wife and I recently celebrated our anniversary there and their attention to detail is such that they created a custom menu that evening with special mention to our anniversary. The bar staff is equally impressive with great cocktails.
