I went with a friend for brunch, so the noise level was nice and quiet. The place is really pretty and unique. Food is great! I highly recommend their mocktails. I had Liquid Sunshine sans alcohol and it was delicious!
I really like WT and always enjoy myself when I visit. My single criticism is that there needs to be a buffer between the entrance and the bar/restaurant. It is currently poorly designed. In the cold weather, when the door opens, which is frequently, a cold gust of wind hits the bar area. You will improve your ambiance 100% if you take care of this one issue.
Always love dinner here but please bring back the Poutine app!
A fun spot in Evanston!
We were a party of six that thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Whiskey Thief. We had appetizers, sandwiches and drinks. The service was outstanding and our waitress was excellent.
Dined here as we were running an errand in the Evanston area and were looking for a new option. Saw this and stopped in because they had brunch and regular options. Loved the décor. Guys will like the many televisions tuned to sports events and the women will like the mirrors and chandeliers. Yep, it's that eclectic, but I think they managed to please everybody. We chose to sit in the oversized barrel seating, but would caution those who don't like drafts. They can receive a draft every time the front door opens, but I like cold, so I was happy. Server was prompt and friendly. We started off with their craft cocktails ( Murder in the Tropics and At the Darkest Hour) and if we didn't have errand to run, I would have worked through several more. They were excellent. Food did not disappoint either. I had the pork belly sliders and could only finish two of them. Think thick slabbed bacon on mini buns. Great size and accompanied by hot and crispy thin fries. My companion chose the Thief burger which he deemed great, accompanied by sweet potato fries. I liked that the latter were similar in size to traditional fries, so liked them as well. I can see myself whiling away an afternoon or evening here ( or maybe both?). It's a chill vibe and far removed from the busy streets of Evanston street traffic.
Food and drinks were delicious and perfectly prepared. The server was distracted and not particularly attentive, but she was kind, cheerful, and knowledgeable. The avocado deviled eggs (SO good) were served in a cut up cardboard egg carton -- you decide kitchy and weird or refreshing and unexpected. Few more little items like that that didn't necessarily add to the experience and could detract..... Overall, I will be back and taking more friends.
Return visit. Great to sit in a "whiskey barrel". This works well for conversation. Enjoyed appetizers, sandwiches, and dessert. Don't miss on the dessert. Oh, yes.....enjoyed beer too.
Nice and casual and fun, good music, pretty loud DJ night! 😁
Quality bar and very good food. Great burgers and they have $1.00 oysters during happy hour! Really worth a visit.
My wife and I had another great meal here. Jane was our server, very attentive and friendly. Salmon and pasta were great. This is a fantastic place to eat in Evanston.
Nice place. Good food. Great service. Fun lively atmosphere. I’m looking to return and try a burger or a steak. (Currently a pescatarian for awhile). Drinks were very good. Tons of bourbons and beers to chose from. Not too expensive. Casual and nice.
Good and service was excellent. A little pricey but overall good
Great atmosphere with some really fun items on the menu and great drink options.
Great ambience and good food. The only issue we had was our table placement. The cold wind from the door kept blowing on us every time somebody entered the restaurant, but the host moved us to a different table in a warmer spot; overall though our experience was exceptional.
Overpriced. Super average food. Been twice and won’t be going back.
W thief is really a restaurant. Despite the cover of coolness and a huge menu of whiskeys and assorted alcohols, there are cooks who know their trade. Walleye pike special was superb under a coating of rich sauces and perfect green beans and assorted. Mix of cplemenyary nuts. n chips was mixed , cod was nice. chips were not wonderful. Vibe was strong. Menu brief with appealing choices.
Nice place, but confusion at check in for our table. The hostess suggested she didn't know where she seated by dinner companions, and can I walk around and find them. She asked me to do this twice, then said our dinner reservation showed as being complete. What?? We hadn't even sat down yet. She was young, nice, but I think in need of training.
My steak was overdone. I would come back, but somewhat disappointing experience this time around.
We were disappointed to see that the menu has changed since our last visit. The offerings are much less diverse than before.
Food was good.
Waiter personality was luke warm. He could have been more pleasant, however, he was not rude.
We waited forever for him to pick up credit card payment.
Wonderful experience. Great food and a great waitress! Lots of energy and very cozy.
Great food, cocktails, service, and ambiance. One of my pet peeves is a messy/dirty restroom but theirs were great! My only complaint would be that, while very cool to look at, the metal backed stools for the front tables were absolute hell on the back--this coming from my 23 year old son! Overall, though, we will be back!
The decor and environment were really unique, but unfortunately the service and food didn’t live up to expectations. We had a party of 4 on a Thursday night, and we had to flag down our server multiple times for water refills and wine orders. The pork medallions were wildly overcooked and very tough, there was a vodka signature cocktail they recommended that was too sweet and tasted kinda off? Although the avocado deviled egg appetizer was delicious. Giving this spot 3/5, food and service need a little work.
As always, a solid choice. Excellent cocktails, interesting and tasty food — a step above the usual bar fare. Consistent service. Will certainly return.
I would haver given this restaurant, with delicious fare, a higher rating had our server been even the slightest bit interested in our table. He unhappily took our order and the only time we ever saw him again is when we successfully flagged him down for more drink and food. The food was the saving grace. All our dishes, and were were a party of 7, were excellent. We all loved the ambiance. Despite the poor service we will certainly be returning.
The hostess was wonderful and gave us a beautiful barrel booth. He replaced our candle when it burned out and was very nice. Our waiter was inattentive but also nice. I wish he’d checked on us more. We had to wait a while to order our second drink and we shared a steak knife since he didn’t check on us after we received our food. The drinks were delicious. There was a movie playing where a man was arrested and they shot his dog...not something I wanted to see at dinner, but otherwise the atmosphere was great as usual.
Would have rated higher, but the only reason we considered this place vs others has been the poutine appetizer that they have taken off the menu. It was that good. Sadly, we will not be returning.
Great place for a quick bite before the show. Menu is somewhat limited, but great selection of beer and cocktails.
Fun place with great food. Burgers were excellent! Will definitely go back
Overall, we liked it very much. The food choices were different and yummy. Wine pour was very small.
The price for the portions was okay. Food tasted yummy, but a little pricey for what's included.
One of our favorites in Evanston!
The sign hanging outside is really small so I drove past it 3 times looking for it. Plan on spending at least an extra 15 min trying to find parking on the street and walking back. I was there on a Thursday night and it was pretty packed. The setup of the booths and the decor is very nice. The servers were friendly and the food and drinks were delicious. I would definitely go back.
This is a wonderful gastro-pub with a burger-centric eclectic menu. You will have many choices ranging starters to full plate dinners. What makes this pub stand out is the wide variety of seating options and dining environments. You can have a quiet more intimate setting in one of the “whiskey barrel” booths to larger group type seating in front of a wide screen TV for sporting events. I have done both and had a wonderful time in each setting.
Food was fabulous! Service was good. Atmosphere quiet which was very pleasant. Will return.
Burgers, beer, salad were all a level above what I expected. Great ambience, lively but not overpowering. Definitely going back.
Loved it- one of the cutest restaurants I have visited in Evanston!
Wait staff was great. Hostess was not very friendly or helpful.
Liked Whiskey Thief a lot - have been 2x now. Friendly staff (great host), good food, fun vibe. Wish they had more pescatarian or vegetarian menu options.
Whiskey Thief is one our “go to” places. We take friends and they always love it. Tasty food. We love sitting in a whiskey barrel booth. And the Library in the back wall makes for a cozy setting. . Tvs play sports or old movies. It’s a casual, comfy place.
