Westside Tavern Ratings and Reviews
Really enjoyed the fact that they now take reservations!!!! Never went in the past because the line was always too long after the movies. We enjoyed the Caesar Salad (dressing could be a little bit better), mushroom flat bread (very good) and the mac and cheese. We had no liquor and the bill was $49.33 including tax and tip for the two of us. The other couple seemed to enjoy their meal also.
The food was delicious as always. The cheeseburger w bacon is simply divine. Love the sweet potato fries too. However, the service was exceptional. We dine here every Friday night and always have good service, but John from NEw York goes above and beyond every single time we have him as our server. He is quite exceptional!
I wanted this time to be different...we'd hoped Westside Tavern had improved.
1) The service--was lacking. We were seated at a table where the seats and tabletop had not been adequately cleaned. Had we not noticed this ourselves before sitting down, we would have stained our clothes by sitting down on food debris left behind by other patrons. When we politely brought this matter to our server's attention, she rolled her eyes and responded with what appeared to be annoyance.
2) The red wine--was served ice cold. We were told this was caused by a storage problem. It took close to 30 mins for a new glass of wine to arrive--unfortunately just as cold as the first glass.
3) The dinner entrees--salmon was tasty and prepared as ordered. The vegetarian main course, although edible, lacked creativity in ingredients and lacked appeal in presentation (it looked like a plate of brownish mush).
Restaurant patrons deserve more respect...especially when spending close to $25-30 per entree.
I was very much looking forward to dining here, I had friends that raved that it was their favorite restaurant. I was very disappointed. The service was sub-par. Our waiter got us water, and then never asked if we wanted other drinks, on top of that I could not get anyone to refill our waters. When we finally ordered, they never brought out the Brussel sprouts we ordered and my husbands hamburger arrived without french frys...we were told that they would be out soon...10 min later they arrived, no explanation about what took so long. My friend ordered the Pumpkin flatbread which was tasteless. Our waiter never checked to see if we were okay. When he came by at the end of our meal I told him to be sure and take the Brussel sprouts off our bill as we never received them...he said "Oh did they not bring them out?" What a disappointment......
Had dinner with a few friends, and was worried about my options because I'm not currently eating gluten or dairy. I'm not always a huge cauliflower fan but I ordered the roasted cauliflower because it seemed like a good veggie option, and OMG it was incredible. So delicious. Even when I'm back to eating gluten and dairy, I will still totally order this app!
We took our visiting foodie cousins from Berkeley here and they liked it. One cousin tried three different wine samples before choosing one and was happy that they let her do that. We shared a delicious prosciutto and melon starter. She had trout and had some left over to take home.
The dinner my friend and I had at Westside Tavern was absolutely far and beyond our expectations. I am a big soup fan and very wary of the “seasonal soup” that turns out to just be clam chowder or minestrone. But at Westside, that soup turned out to be parsnip brown butter chestnut soup and it was probably the best soup I’ve ever had. Adding to that, we had the Brussels sprouts+prosciutto and the cauliflower starters and were blown away by how delicious and flavorful both of them were. Between 2 soups and those 2 starters, we were also actually full (and neither of us are delicate eaters).
We initially did not like being sat in the back room bc we feel cut off from the energy of the restaurant, and the service is always slower, which is a given. But, our server was fantastic even though he had his hands full, and as always, the food was amazing. He bacon cheeseburger w carmelized onions is hands-down the best burger I have ever eaten. I savor each bite and NEVER get tired of it.
As you must have noticed, I booked all my tables through OpenTable at Westside Tavern. They have a policy of not seating people until the party is complete. I was lucky because I went there so often I was always seated immediately, whether my guest had arrived or not. On my last meal there, I tore a ligament in my knee. I asked to be seated (as I always am, without asking) and I was told that that would not be possible. The four or five seats in the waiting area were taken, so I had no choice but to stand, which was extremely painful. I asked to see a manager, and explained that I am always seated. The lady said “oh well” and turned her back on me. Toward the end of the meal, a manager that I knew came to the table and apologized.
I felt like the whole experience was completely disrespectful, considering I was eating there 2-3 times a week, every week, if not more. I would run into people all the time that I had turned onto The Westside Tavern. I have since branched outing tried numerous other restaurants. When people see that I am a repeat customer, I am seated immediately. So if you are wondering why I haven’t booked through OpenTable in a while, it is because I no intention of going back to Westside Tavern as long as long as I live.
This is one of our favorite restaurants, as the food and service are usually excellent. That wasn't the case for this visit. Three of the 4 entrees were less than great, and our server was incredibly cold and distant. One person's short ribs were dry and lacked flavor; my wife's halibut was cooked and flavored well, but one piece had almost no sauce; and my tagliatelle was not very flavorful and a little too al dente. We will certainly be back; this visit was atypical.
