WAX at Watergate Bay
Locally sourced mussels served in a creamy white wine, thyme and garlic sauce served with chips and ciabatta
Fish And Chips
A half sized portion of our cod and chips
Fish & Chips
Atlantic cod cooked in Skinners beer batter served with chips, minted peas and homemade tartar sauce
Slow service, burnt chicken burger, mediocre pizza...
Great food and ambience, long wait for meal but worth it.
Great service, good food. Very large portion sizes.
I was thanking my friends for a wonderful holiday.
We all had mussels but one of my friends found part of a Jay cloth in her meal.
It was disgusting, she couldn’t eat any more and I just felt sick and stopped eating.
The manager just offered a refund on the dish, which when the bill arrived he had forgotten to give.
So basically we didn’t pay for a dish we didn’t eat and although she was offered a replacement she by this time felt so sick she couldn’t eat.
We should have been offered a discount on the meal but nothing.
It’s very disappointing as I eat there a lot. The day before the drinks delivered twice were wrong.
The staff in general seem disinterested and quite frankly look scruffy and not smart at all. Although our waitress was lovely some of the other staff need to smarten up.
Wax has gone down hill and a large glass of wine served warm is £7.95.
Rough round the edges is how best described.
Great food, friendly staff, would be better if more choice on the menu. We have been 3 times in past year and tagliatelle is never available.
Ice cream was served melted.
They called in advance to say fryer was broken, so we didn't order fried food but then saw other people being served fried food ie.Hullumoui fries.
Drinks were flat.
Kids squash stained my daughter hands which was strange. They were also served in glasses..she was 2 years old. No high chair offered and toilets were not clean enough! Service was slow.
Only good points- pizzas were gorgeous and views brilliant.
Fantastic. Couldn’t have been more flexible and accommodating. A great place to chill.
We felt sorry for the staff really. The place was busy but we waited to be seated for a while. Then we were sat upstairs in a really noisy children’s area. We asked to be sat downstairs and waited forever to be served. The food was fine but the team was clearly understaffed and the management not visible!
I’m hoping it was just an unfortunate and unlucky visit. We had a great welcome by the lovely lady downstairs who explained what we needed to do and where we needed to go to be met by attitude at the top of the stairs to show us to our table. Such a shame as it has great potential but it was so bad, it had put us off returning. Food was ok. Not expensive so would expect food we were served to an extent. Such a shame
The staff were really friendly, helpful and attentive. The sea view from our outside table was unexpected. The food and portion sizes were good. We would definitely return again.
Food excellent quality on all the dishes we had especially the pizza really authentic Italian style. Mussels also delicious.
We were really looking forward to returning here after an enjoyable meal here last year. We were already aware of staffing problems (Cornwall is really struggling with hospitality right now) so were prepared for some delay. However, not as long as it transpired - seems our waitress lost our order. She was clearly upset about it and promptly put it right by putting us to the front of the queue and our starters followed 10 mins later (after an original 45 minute wait), quickly followed by our mains. The food was hot and tasty when it arrived, but we missed the nachos not being on the menu. We are prepared to cut Wax some slack this time round because of the fallout from COVID and lack of staff everywhere, and really our waitress couldn’t have been sweeter, and the staff were clearly busting a gut to provide as good a service as possible. We also had 15% knocked off our bill, so all is forgiven!
Great food and location.
The seafood tagliatelle was absolutely superb.
Fab lunch on our visit, the staff were great and couldn’t do enough! Would highly recommend.
Good was good. Everyone who had the burger raved about them!
Wax is always a great place to eat. Dog friendly and the staff are always fast and friendly.
Limited menu, but delicious.
Wonderful as ever. Sum was our so the food, views and ambiance was perfect
The woman serving us was exceptionally friendly and helpful and made us very welcome. (Purply blue hair).
Great service in difficult circumstances. Much appreciated
Menu choices limited and not what had been attached to confirmation.
Burger was over cooked and we were not asked how we would like it cooked.
Toilet facilities were not very clean and no soap which in this current climate is not acceptable.
Avoid at all costs. Booked months ago. Arrived and checked in. Told to make my way to a table number. Did this only to receive a telling off from a rude waitress who made me go back to the entrance only to walk back to my table. She then left us at our table for 20 minutes before offering us so much as a drink. Plenty of people were having similar experience.
Great atmosphere with very helpful and friendly staff very accomodating to moving tables etc
It was a hot and busy day so staff were pressurised … food took quite a long time to come … but to be fair staff were friendly and the quality of the food was good.
We love Wax . It’s quite plain and bare with little ambience in terms of lights or pictures etc but basically it’s a surfers pub with few frills . It has lovely views of the sea . The service was prompt and very friendly and the food was great ..home made pizzas with the thinnest lightest base and plenty of toppings and seafood linguine which turned into seafood penne pasta but it was well flavoured with plenty of fresh seafood . Wax is basic and casual but well worth a visit .
Needs a touch of tlc, asked to take picture of menu on wall, great idea to cut down on infection. However it would be good if they had used the picture on the website, reduced choice from the web, don’t think I would have booked if we had seen the “real” one. Disappointed that tables outside were not available, for the whole of our visit there were tables free, but were told we could not use them. The waiter showed us to our table, returned a few minutes later asking for drinks choice, came back almost immediately for our food choice, asked him to leave us a minute, which he did , but then ask a waitress 20 minutes later to take our orders.
Having said all that the food was really good!
One of our favourite places. Fantastic staff who make you feel very welcome
Beautiful place with great views over Watergate Bay. Delicious food and friendly service. Highly recommended.
Superb food and drink.
Please be aware it’s not in Newquay it’s in Watergate bay 15 min or £13 cab ride from the town
The food was good but it took about 50 minuets to get to us, it really wasn't that busy and most things coming out were all the same burger. It was really tasty, but the wait was so long it wasn't worth it, the service was average, especially in comparison to the epic breakfast the next morning. We didn't order dessert because of the wait. Was really looking forward to the meal so was quite disappointed to be honest!
Buttter Milk chicken dry aw a bone, such poor value. Service was mixed one girl very helpful, one young man unhelpful.
Very poor value...try somewhere else..
Gorgeous food in a perfect setting. Even held back on the chilli so my meal was delicious! Definitely recommend!
Food was tasty, portions were smaller than usual. Very very long wait for food, over an hour. Staff were lovely and super friendly, felt sorry for them clearly need more staff in the kitchen.
Loved the food and excellent friendly staff. Very relaxing atmospher
Very slow service & a very underwhelming signature cheese burger.
we waited ages for our food and when it arrived it was very poor, it looked like it had been plated up in a hurry and just didnt look good at all, not cheap either
we used to eat here when it was The Phoenix, but this is nothing like the Phoenix
wont be returning
Delicious food in a lovely environment with friendly attentive staff.
On a limited menu at the minute because of lack of staff, hence the 4 stars,we had squid rings & haloumi fries to start, both very tasty although small portions. Mains were good : chicken burger & seafood pasta. Reasonably priced & would go back.
Food was ok but not worth the money, not particularly good quality.
