Waterwheel Restaurant - Inn at Gristmill Square
This was an outstanding restaurant nestled in the middle of nowhere, truly a wonderful find. Everything we had was delightful. We started with the Feta Cheese Parcel, which was wonderful, be sure to add a little of the delicious honey to complete the dish. We had the Baby Spinach and Red Leaf Salad, it was a lovely combination of flavors. I had the Mountain Trout and I can honestly say it is the best trout I have ever had. My husband had the Organic Roasted Chicken which he kept smacking his lips over. High praise indeed. We finished this by overindulging in a decadent chocolate cake with a hazelnut ice cream, which had an incredible sauce which I think was gingerbread flavored, delicious! We were so lucky to happen upon this restaurant and the Inn At Gtristmill Square, we plan on making it an annual visit, a true delight!
Great food. A little slow. Pricey.
Both a Service charge & gratuity
As usual, my wife and I had a great dinner at the Waterwheel. My wife had a good Old Fashioned, and I thoroughly enjoyed my cocktail with mezcal and smoked pineapple. The smoked trout appetizer is our favorite, and consistently a highlight of our meals at the Waterwheel. I always enjoy visiting the wine cellar, and I found a reasonably priced Argentine Malbec to accompany our meal. For our entrees, my wife ordered the cornmeal encrusted trout, and I had the lamb. Both were very good and kept to the high standards of the restaurant. For dessert we shared the maple creme brûlée with mint and white chocolate, and it was divine. My wife and I appreciate the effort put in at the Waterwheel to maintain a consistent, high quality dining experience at a reasonable price.
And enjoyable and delicious dining experience. The ambience was charming, including the small wine cellar. We were warmly greeted and the service was outstanding. The menu had a nice variety of dishes. Everything from our appetizer to the dessert was delicious.
A wonderful "special occasion" place. While we are infrequent patrons, we always enjoy visiting there.
Outstanding food and great service. An absolute must if you are in the area.
Service was great and all staff were welcoming and attentive. Nice touch having a small wine cellar to choose your wine from. Menu was interesting and positions were plentiful. They were out of the lamb (which 2 of us wanted) but other selections were good. Weak spot were desserts as they were ok but not inspiring.
Celebrating my sisters birthday. Staying at the Homestead but wanted to try the Waterwheel after reading the great reviews. Must note that Homestead staff said this was their favorite off site restaurant. We were not disappointed.
Danny was great! Food came out quickly and tasted amazing. Drinks were also well-balanced and delicious.
The food was excellent, both in presentation and taste. Our party ordered trout, salmon and chicken entrees. Variety of wine choices and you can choose your own in the cellar downstairs.
Very nice food from a chef that knows how to make dishes taste wonderful. A definite gem hidden away in Warm Springs.
Lovely as usual. A little miscommunication
Delightful restaurant and very good food. Staff was friendly, prompt service.
Literally, we have been dining at this restaurant for decades, and it is well worth the one hundred mile drive. The food is always first class, but I particularly enjoy stepping back into a kinder , gentler time. I am looking forward to returning soon.
Brought some friends to give Waterwheel a try for the first time...needless to say the LOVED IT!. One guest said the pork tenderloin was the best he has had in his entire life...thanks John and the team! Megan did a great job serving.
Great trout. Nice salad. Had to ask for more than one piece of bread but that was fine. Overall good service and very quiet which was welcome and so pleasant
Fantastic experience, and the best meal we had during three days at the Homestead. Can't wait to return.
An absolutely incredible dining experience tucked away in Warm Springs. Wonderfully attentive and helpful service, and walking down to the cellar to select your wine for the evening is really a treat! The food is innovative and fresh, and the ambiance is perfect for a special dinner to celebrate anything or nothing at all. The teeny tiny bar at the front of the house adds to the charm.
I’d give it 4.5 stars. Great ambiance set in an old 18th Century grist mill. Great place to go with your spouse r family for a special occasion. We had the parpadelle and filet mignon. Both were delicious . The staff and service were very friendly. Highly recommend stopping here if you are in the area.
Extraordinary restaurant ! A hidden gem in the countryside of Virginia. We absolutely loved our meal experience at the Waterwheel.
Menu items are well thought out and expertly prepared.....kitchen staff is amazing ! This is a place well worth a long drive to enjoy a meal there.
We go to Water Wheel every time we go to the Homestead, and once again it did not disappoint! Such charming atmosphere, relatively quiet restaurant..easy to hear everyone at our table of 8. Food is always outstanding, and friendly staff and servers can’t be beat. We’ll be visiting again next year for sure!
We had a wonderful time. This was my wife's 60 birthday and it was perfect. We both enjoyed it very much. The food was delicious!
Love love love the Waterwheel Restaurant and staying at the Gristmill Inn. My husband and I came for our first wedding anniversary and his 30th birthday. He hadnt been before and loved it too. We cant wait to come back !
Amazing dining experience! The Waterwheel serves impeccable food and wine. Our server, Megan, was delightful and professional. Make a reservation and go - you won't be disappointed!
great experience. chick pea, feta, and smoked fish were all delicious starters. thank you for the hospitality
We had dinner at all restaurants in Hot Springs during our stay. Hands down the food was spot on with a relaxed setting and a very good wait staff that paid attention to details as it relates to service. Food presentation was to perfection and look forward to making another visit the next time there.
My husband and I ate here tonight and we loved everything about it! We were celebrating our 2 year wedding anniversary and they treated us to sparkling wine as soon as we got there as well as a little table that was very private and romantic. We definitely recommend eating here! Food, service and everything was superb!
Everything about the restaurant is amazing - food, service, ambiance. The wine cellar is special treat. We liked it so much we went back the next night and dined in the pub.
Excellent food well presented by wonderful server. Atmosphere is relaxing and quiet.
The Waterwheel Restaurant is located in beautiful Warm Springs, VA. The food was excellent. Service could have been better. Our beverage glasses weren't kept full and dirty dishes weren't removed from our table in a timely manner.
We were a party of four with one very picky eater. The menu selections had something for everyone. The picky eater in our group was "over the moon" with his choice. Excellent food with exceptional service. Highly recommend to anyone visiting the Warm Springs area.
Great setting with lots of charm. The food was good but nothing special. Several items on the menu were not available. There was not a children’s menu. We had eaten here before while visiting the Homestead and were looking forward to our return. Not sure if we will be back.
Thank you, we are sorry that we let you down on this visit. We did run out of some menu items on Tuesday night, sadly! Being located in the middle of no where, and using only fresh, not frozen ingredients, means that at times when you run out you are out until you can get another delivery. We were busier than we had expected an thus not as prepared as we'd have liked. We have never had a kid's menu, but always offer kid items. We hope you change your mind and give us another try sometime.
Awesome food & service every time.
It is a truly lovely place and a wonderful way to celebrate my birthday!
This restaurant is a hidden gem. I wish they were open on the weekends.
Thank you for your kind words. Please note that we are open on weekends. We only close when we have either a private event or a catering off property. Otherwise always open...7 days a week :)
We’ve dined all over and this meal was right up there with the best ever.
My salmon was mouth watering with accompanying sides and my husband thought his bolognese was amazing and he is quite particular about this dish.
The food and service were 5 star! Excellent cuisine.
Amazing food and service! Could not have been happier.
Quaint meets rustic but needs some TLC. Parties of 2 are relegated to postage stamp size tables tucked close together so any 'country inn' ambiance is lost. Period chairs mimic the heritage decor but do not offer any comfort. There was a highlight, however, in that the sea scallops were cooked to perfection. This was not enough to make us want to return, however, nor recommend.
I am sorry that you weren't comfortable (to answer your private note: we do dine at our restaurant frequently and have spent many a fabulous night seated in those same chairs without the same discomfort you experienced). It sounds like you were seated downstairs in the nook near the famed "hopper". Should you return I'll make sure to put a note on your reservation not to seat you there. We are glad to hear at least you liked our food, what little of it was served to you. Take care, Kate
