Water Grill - South Coast Plaza

First time at Water Grill, and the service was the best part as they made my wife and I feel welcome. I felt the prices were too high for food that does not come with side dishes considering they seem to want to be known for seafood. The location rules if you are going to a show since you can leave your car there while you walk the 5 minutes to the theater. I have a feeling the bar/patio scene is fun. Great lighting.
I made reservations for 7 with a request for a seating area where it would be easier to have conversations. I know there is no guarantee requests can be fulfilled. However, when we arrived we were seated in the middle of the room at a table set up ONLY for 6 people. I had to stand and wait for a table set up of silverware and glasses and in the meantime had I finally found my own chair. I was seated at the end of 2 tables put together. Being the 7th person I was seated at the end of the table with approximately a 4 inch pole between my knees and my heels on the feet of the table since it was THE very end of the table. Not comfortable in the least and unable to hear most all of the conversation. The food was very good. However, the restaurant was so noisy/loud we couldn't hear each other talking. I will say it is a pretty restaurant but while the food was good the ambiance was horrible. No chance of having a decent conversation with my fellow diners. Even those right next to me. If you just want good food and don't care about conversing with your friends then you will be happy. However, if you're hoping to have good food AND enjoy good company this is NOT the place.
Food was incredibly good. Both the salmon and the swordfish were cooked perfectly. Had issues with time it took to seat us (with a reservation) and time to get our food, but the manager apologized and comped us so we will give them another chance. Even with the delays would be worthwhile for the food if we hadn't had plans afterwards.
We were there on time and seated 10 minutes late. Very noisy and tight location near the bar. Food/ drinks and service overall was good but not great. Several items weren’t delivered at all and the manager apologized and gave use some discounts overall as the experience was mediocre compared to my hope for my first time there.
A bit disappointing. Given the upscale nature of the place, one would think it would be more accommodating to allergies. (Ie gluten-free offering is very poor....wouldn’t even make tuna for us).
For the non-allergy eaters, it was just ok, nothing special.
If you want fresh seafood and top notch service, this is the place to go. Everything that we tried left us speechless. The wait staff was attentive to every need and the general manager stopped by our table at the end of our meal to ensure we were happy and wish me a happy birthday. You can’t go wrong with the seafood tower, the Chilean sea bass or the scallops. Each is full of flavor but let’s the natural taste of the ocean shine. We will be back.
Delicious cioppino with plenty of perfectly cooked seafood! Crispy sour dough baguette for dipping in the broth. Perfect seasoning. What a treat!
The food was excellent but pricey. Our waitress was terrific. We went there pre theater and they were sure to get our food out in time.
Food wasn’t great. Tried a new item on the menu the Lobster Risotto and it was undercooked and not great. Service was very good.
My wife and I have been coming here dinner they opened and have never had a bad experience... Highly recommend!
We always enjoy Water Grill. It’s a little bigger restaurant than we normally like, but if you get a perimeter table away from the bar, it is nice. Clam chowder is excellent, plenty of clams, not too many potatoes, good texture and not too salty. Black cod is spectacular!
Very fresh seafood with a wide variety of choices. Menu includes items other than seafood for the non-seafood lover. A bit pricy but all dishes we have selected have been excellent. Dined here 2 times within a few days while visiting in the area.
Food was very good and the service was very attentive but the one negative was we felt rushed.
Water Grill never disappoints. Food, service and ambience are perfect for almost any dinning circumstance.
Amazing every time! Great service (Janise is our favorite), attentive staff and management, fantastic food, and awesome atmosphere. This place is a must! Enjoy!
I just love coming here before attending a show! The food and service, never disappoint.
Very good food, attentive servers, nice ambience. Very expensive, for my liking, a bit too. Ich oil is used on the vegetables and salmon.
It’s really great when your server is so knowledgeable.
Service is slow. Food usually good but inconsistent.
food was good. service was great. not enough gluten-free options.
The former Scott's restaurant is now Water Grill. Very good food, notably the seafood, which is their signature cuisine. Large raw bar. Very good service. My only gripe are the beverage prices. In this day and age, many restaurants are starting to charge reasonable rates for their wines. Apparently Water Grill has not ascribed to this concept and a wine that would be $18 a bottle at the store is served at close to $18 per glass. Quite ridiculous. The food is terrific, but if you want wine with dinner, you might look elsewhere.
Had a bite to eat before heading to the performing arts center.
First time here, rally impressed with the overall look and layout of the restaurant. Service and food were excellent.
Great experience, our server Jordan gave exceptional service and went above and beyond.
The spiny lobster was amazing! Everything was wonderful for our anniversary celebration dinner. Even the bread was mouth-watering delicious!
Exceptional service, food was good, not spectacular. The entrees were pretty pricey, appetizers and sides a little more fair. Either way, we enjoyed the ambience and will likely be back.
Getting together with an old friend
Just outstanding, all around. A wonderful dinner. Service was wonderful and the menu was very interesting, with lots of great options.
Warm friendly service. Superb food!
I have had some bad experiences at the Water Grills in DTLA and OC, so expectations were low. But this time our server Rachel was friendly and attentive and the food was well prepared and came quickly.
Exceptional food and presentation, very professional staff. Our server was very kind and very service oriented, and made our lunch very fun!
The food was horrible. What a shame- the place is beautiful. Good cocktails.
Our busboy was very nice - the waiter’s knowledge and service was impeccable - in all the times we have eaten at your fine restaurant before going to the theater, we have never before been asked what time we would like to leave to go to the theater- after telling him, he would remind us of the time in order to coordinate the dinner - he is a keeper!!!
Service and ambiance was excellent. Food was somewhat disappointing. Small entree portions, although sides were delicious and very generous for price. Cioppino was not the best. Seafood was limited and needed a lot of work for small morsels. No fish, just calamari rings, whole unpeeled shrimp, snow crab with little meat but a big presence, and a few small muscles. For the price would not order again. If you’re going to have Cioppino on you’re menu as a seafood restaurant this was sad and I was very disappointed after looking forward to having this dish. Scallop dish had three medium/large scallops. Excellent but not a good value. If we went again would order sides and salad.
We arrived after a show so, we were pretty much the last seating, but the staff and food was great!
We dine here often and enjoy our window booth each time. The food has always been prepared with perfection and in an innovative, delicious way.
Beware - The Cioppino does not list all its contents on the menu. Also, the menu states it contains Jumbo Shrimp but it's not shrimp. It's Prawns. Also, the crab legs are difficult to eat. The crab meat is not taken out of the shell so you have to crack them open with the nutcracker they give you. Being the crab legs are in a broth, cracking them open is very messy. I wound up throwing most of them away.
Great service and professional greeting by the manager!
Celebrated a great 2019 NYE.
Would have preferred a better DJ.
The music played was old school and didn’t match the crowd.
The mixing was not the best.
Otherwise the Water Grill restaurant is great!
Everything was fantastic, seated right by the kitchen, we were able to see some crazy huge Alaskan King Crabs. We met up with some friends for NYE and it was perfect, food was awesome, dessert spectacular, looking forward to dining here again.
New Year’s Eve!
