    The food might be described as high end comfort food. Very well done French bistro classics with excellent wines, including lovely wines by the glass, and good cocktails. Very friendly service and a noise level where you don't have to strain to hear your dinner companions.

    Upon walking in there was a very fowl fish smell. Several people in my party mentioned this as well which we didn't particularly like. If I wasn't meeting someone here for work I would have left. Food is over priced for what you get

    We had a warm welcome from the owner, Mr. Teresa. We have been to his two other establishments and always looked forward to our next visit. Our waiter, Massimo, was exceptionally professional in his diligent service. His warm personality added to our experience. Our selections, Herring X 5 and Vegetables Pot Au Feu were exceptional. It was a treat to indulge in these dishes. I've added two herring dishes to my list. We look forward to lunch as there aren't many restaurants of this caliber in this downtown area.

    Appetizers were great. Entrees ok. Deserts were clearly frozen previously and reheated. Alarm went off for 15m with nothing but a message that it was caused by the system being connected to Westfield mall. I would visit again for apps but would avoid for a complete meal

    Had been looking forward to trying Volta, specifically for the variety of herring offered, which is certainly unusual on the US West Coast. Also, figured since this is Mr. Terjes restaurant, how could we possibly go wrong? The flight of herring was certainly stellar; the rest of the selections were also very nice; the steak was perfectly cooked and well seasoned, and the wine server gave us a bit of a history on our selection of an Alsace wine we ordered. Very nice. Unfortunately, the rest of it was sort of an exercise in discomfort, as we felt we were being unnecessarily rushed; the plates were removed by pointing to the dishes, the check was presented together with the dessert and coffee, "whenever you're ready" and the server checked three times within the span of 5 minutes to see if it was ready for pick-up. When I presented my credit card at the third check, I went to refresh myself, and upon my return the waiter removed the check immediately; I had to proclaim that I had not signed the check yet nor had I retrieved my credit card. (Mind you, we were only there for an hour and a half, and it was not closing time.) None of that would have been a problem if this were a diner or very casual restaurant, where expectations are not high. In this place, and at these prices, it was quite disappointing. It will be a while before I return.

    We have been to Volta 3 times for lunch this summer and each time has been amazingly good in all respects. We walk over after every visit to SFMOMA and we are very disappointed to learn that they will no longer be open for lunch.

    We arrived a little early but were seated nonetheless. Our server was excellent & knew the unique (the food has a Scandinavian influence) menu very well. We enjoyed 2 appetizers, our meals & several amazing cocktails. Their bartender is very capable! Cheers!

    Comfortable seating, relatively subdued, you could converse in a normal voice here - a major plus. The food is good, even very good, but the menu is limited. The wine-by-the-glass service is exemplary: they pour from the bottle at the table, and give you a taste first, a great rarity. Wish they had more pasta selections (this place has Italian heritage).

    The wait staff did not ask how I wanted the salmon prepared, and I did not think to order it cooked medium. The center was raw, and I have never been served salmon that was raw in the center before. I could not finish it.

    Went for Brunch. Great restaurant with excellent cocktails and food. The host was very gracious, however our server was either inexperienced or having an off-morning. He needed a couple requests to remember to bring certain items, and was condescending in his manner. I will certainly go back to Volta for another meal, but would request a different server.

    What a lovely meal and experience. Food was stellar as was service -- why don't more restaurants offer you a taste of wine before you have to commit to a full glass!? Volta did exactly this and what an appreciated gesture. They were also very accommodating of adjustments to dishes we requested. Can't wait to go back next time we are in San Fran.

    Volta is a beautiful,modern design restaurant,serving relatively expensive Scandinavian/French cuisine---the Swedish meatballs were great, served only with mashed potatoes. Add a veggie, and the price is $30.00+== The wines BTG, were expensive @ $12-$18.00---And the pour was only 4-5oz…J.

    Our group had a big table in an area that allowed us to talk easily. Our server Robert was excellent and helpful regarding portion sizes and sharing options. Everyone enjoyed starters (herring 5 ways was phenomenal). Entrees were also great including pork chops, halibut, salmon and Swedish meatballs. Cocktails were great too and the wine selection had some great options. We were too full for dessert however.

    Volta is consistently one of our favorite places. The food is really great. The place is quiet so you can talk in a normal voice. The service is attentive and friendly without being intrusive. Everything we have had there has been thoughtfully prepared. A special shout out to the wild mushroom soup which is consistently great. Try the herring. We have learned to love the acquavit and have enjoyed the flights.

    Appetizers were goods. Salads was good. Only 1 out of 5 of us liked our entrée. Just bland and boring. Service was good. Cocktails were good. Desert. Again 1 out of 3 was good. Coffee was not good. Cold and old.

    Since I have a family dinner reservation at Volta this coming week, I thought I'd give it a try for lunch beforehand. I am pleased with the look of the place--bright, clean, modern. There were 2 of us for lunch and the place was not at all crowded. My friend ordered a glass of wine; I ordered a cocktail. Though she received her wine within 5 minutes, my cocktail was not delivered to our table until the food came. We both ordered the Volta burger; her's well done, mine medium-rare. Her's was fine; my came to the table rare. I brought it to our waiter's attention, who agreed that it wasn't what I ordered. He said he would take it back to the kitchen to cook longer, but I nixed that idea since I didn't want to start eating when my friend was half-way through her meal. So, by that point, I was not particularly impressed with the service from the bar or kitchen. I do admit, even though my burger was rare, it was pretty good and I enjoyed the half I ate. Our waiter was nice, but knew I was already annoyed with the cocktail's late delivery and the burger not being cooked to my specifications. He did comp us our shared dessert. So, I'm hoping that my upcoming dinner, with a party of 8, will go a little more smoothly.

    I was going to give them two stars for their steak and salmon. Considering their receptionist, I would like to take down one more star. We arrived on a Monday evening, with reservation. The girl at the reception desk firstly led us to a table beside the kitchen. We demanded for a quieter table. She took us back to the door and made us waited for another five minutes before leading us to a table beside the stairs. There was a table at the window which was vacant and not reserved but she just would not seat us there. Disappointed and annoyed by her behavior. My friend ordered their salmon with truffle and I ordered the steak. She did not like it and I did not smell the truffle in her plate. My dish was also sort of a disaster. The meat was ought to be medium but they cooked it like rare ? And they gave me a meat piece with blood vein in it?! Good points: I liked the bread and appetizer, the reddish with cream cheese dish, as well as their service at the table. So take home from me is that maybe their appetizers are better than their entrees???

    This place was really about the atmosphere and hospitality, which was great. I would take my parents here if they were in town or corporate clients. You could easily have a conversation through dinner. The food was very solid, good portion size and nicely plated, albeit a bit plain in flavor. There wasn't anything particularly special or unique I couldn't find for less elsewhere. Go for the look, feel and hospitality, knowing you will get a well prepared, but not so exciting meal. The highlight was the foie gras terrine.

    The bottom line: if someone offers to take you to Volta go, but we can't recommend spending your own money there. The dining environment is austere. It might be intended to go with the cuisine. You might like this. We did not. The service was very polished and professional. It was the best part of the experience. The food was good, solid, some of it was interesting, but nothing was exciting or exceptional to our minds. The one item that I was really looking forward to, the Guinea Hen with Douglas fir and strawberry confit, underwhelmed, both in the pate and the influence of the Douglas fir. The best dish we had was the Pork Chop. Everything else was good and there were some interesting flavors, just something was missing.

    The food is quite good. Service was professional & attentive. $16 for a 5 oz pour of a mediocre Chardonnay is outrageous. Will not return.
