I can’t wait to come back to Vivian. The service was amazing, from the person who greeted us behind the bar to our wonderfully attentive but unobtrusive and friendly server. The attention to small details, like changing our silverware between courses and swiftly removing our table of crumbs was done efficiently and unpretentiously.
Upon being seated we were invited to peruse the beverage program which was well curated and creative. My partner had a dirty gin martini hat was honestly one of the most balanced we’ve had dining out.
While we were intrigued by the small plates, (and will come back to try them!) the entrees were more compelling this particular night.
I had the seared scallops, which came with cowpeas, a cauliflower and red pepper giardiniera, Crete fraîche and caviar. The scallops were perfectly seared, and the bretonne sauce was a perfect compliment to the giardiniera. Even he garnish was delicious.
My partner had the tournedos rossini, which festered bacon wrapped filet mignon, cooked just on the medium side of rare 😏, seared foie gras, truffles, and a piece of toast that soaked up every last drop of the sherry demi-glacé that was honestly practically drinkable.
The restaurant itself is cozy without feeling cramped, and we really appreciated the 80s playlist that was loud enough to give us a few laughs but not at all intrusive.
A good excuse to get over to the river arts district, Vivian is definitely going on our list for go to great food, atmosphere and service.
Vivian has some of the most innovative and delicious food in Asheville. If you are looking for creative meals in a friendly casual environment, this is your place.
Our recent Wednesday evening visit to Vivian's was thoroughly enjoyable with great food and superb service. Our waiter, Jordan, was pleasant, prompt and helpful. Sarah (the bartender?) was also very friendly and accomodating and chilled our slightly too warm red wine for us quickly.
The Smoked Oysters with Pickled Shrimp are wonderful; lightly smoked and just a bit warm. The Grilled Cauliflower with Pickled Golden Raisins and the Grilled Tradivo with Warm Polenta, Blue Cheese and Pine Nuts salads were delicious and unusual but delightful combinations. The Steelhead Trout was cooked to perfection and the Braised Red Cabbage and Confit Celery were wonderful accompaniments. The filet in the Tournedos Rossini was super tender and cooked exactly to order and the Sherry Demi Glace was sumptous and rich, but I thought the bacon wrap on the filet was to smoky and overpowered the steak flavor a little too much. I recommended and unsmoked bacon or Pancetta as a substitute.
We had an excellent dinner at Vivian last week. The food was very well prepared and the service was great. It was not too crowded when we were there, so we were able to carry on a normal conversation too.
The service was excellent and the food delicious. We’d definitely go back to Vivian.
Always delicious- thanks!
Delicious cocktails, fantastic food and a great dessert to finish a perfect dinner out. Especially enjoyed the oysters and highly recommend the stew!
Fine cocktails, dazzlingly rich and extraordinary food, top notch bar service. Highly recommended!
One of the best new restaurants in Asheville. Very creative, distinctive menu that fit the fall season. Good, friendly, knowledgeable service. All dishes—appetizers, entrees and deserts—were impressive. Great place.
Enjoyed our meal. The deviled eggs were wonderful and the steelhead trout dish and scallops dish were very tasty.
The scallops were wonderful. The only problem is there are no sides with the dish. Only scallops. $25 for 3 scallops is a bit much no matter how good they are.
2nd visit and just as happy as the first time. Continue to be impressed by the service and the food. Highly recommend!
This is my second time there and I drive from Sylva, NC. The foood is never disappointing. The staff is very tentative but not over bearing and knowledgeable.
Brunch was out of this world! Can’t wait to try dinner!
Smoked oysters! Not quite cooked not quite raw - superb.
It was our first visit and we enjoyed the experience.
Fun vibe, great food, great service, love this place
Thanks for an awesome evening; delicious, imaginative food, perfect cocktails, delightful staff and a great overall vibe.
First time here and will return. Very creative menu with unusual dishes. Really enjoyed the sorrel soup and duck confit stew. Nice wine list by the glass.
From the food to the atmosphere to the service, a fantastic experience!
Has a wonderful time at Vivian!
I have eaten dinner at Vivian's twice--and on both occasions I thought it was outstanding. The small plate options are distinctive, attractively presented, and well worth the price; and the entrees, while somewhat limited, were praised by those in my party on both occasions. I plan to return.
Service was outstanding without being pretentious. Food excellent. Cocktails delicious and fun. Great atmosphere!
Haut cuisine, with some unusual takes on some traditional dishes. Great, friendly service and atmosphere. Easy access and parking, unlike downtown Asheville dining spots.
Great find. Off the main road but a really neat place. Different items on the menu. The best waitress we have ever had. She knew the menu, had great recommendations that were spot on and w a welcoming personality.
Our second visit after an excellent meal there one week earlier. The second visit/meal was equally outstanding.
I was disappointed as we got only 3 scallops for a hefty price.
Great food and my dining companion was a very accomplished French woman with superb skills and she enjoyed every bite. Our waitress was so energetic and the service was as good as the food. The salad was of particular note having interesting greens with the tiniest little croutons which had been toasted over hickory for an amazing smokey flavor. The foie gras came on a bed of chestnut "toast" and the mussels in curry cream were delicious as was the crusty bread. I almost don't want to write this and make reservations harder to get but they deserve the praise.
This was our 4th visit and as always the food and sevice was great
New asheville favorite! Little annoyances (pricey deviled eggs only give you 3 1/2s (what are they doing with the 4th half?!) but the food is outstanding, as are the cocktails.
Third time we've been here. It has never disappointed! They easily took reservations for 6 and seated us even though we arrived early and didn't make us wait for the whole party. Their online notification process, as well as a human call, was good. And the food? BRING IT ON -- EXCELLENT!
Food was really different! Lovely flavors. Beautiful presentation. Food was not temperature hot however. We had: foraged mushrooms, mussels with curry sauce, an excellent sea bass and the squash.
All not hot enough. Good service though.
We loved it and will now be there frequently.
Really great. Our new favorite restaurant in Asheville.
Amazing. We had so many apps and small plates that there was no room for an entree. We did manage to get dessert in, though. You can't go wrong with anything. The quenelle was particularly special.
Vivian is a Hidden gem!!! Welcome to the foodie network!! Everything was fantastic! Compliments to the chef and staff!!!
Great cocktails- amazing wine list! The French ‘orange’ wine a true surprise! Service... A++++
We will be back!
Had been meaning to come to Vivian for some time. Our anniversary was the perfect occasion. They immediately brought us some complementary champagne noting the anniversary note on our online reservation. Food was fantastic with the freshest ingredients. Unique twists on some older, lesser know dishes (garbure, quenelle, etc.). Wife is vegetarian and had some great options. Will go back soon.
We were early to Vivian for Sunday Brunch. Finding many things on the menu we wanted to eat we were extremely impressed with the quality and originality of the offerings. Service was swift, perhaps too swift at times, but the sense of being a bit rushed was overbalanced by the delight in the food with unusual ingredients, the second french press coffee with no additional cost. The value for the price was very high. The minimalist decor put highlights on the food; by the time we finished, the tables were filled, and so were we. No dessert at brunch, though.
In a time when many restaurants think if they “aren’t loud, people won’t think it is fun”, it was great to have dinner at a place that is more sophisticated than that. The staff were cordial, friendly, helpful, funny, and just could not have done a better job.
Vivian-you get it!
These guys have it going on! We went for Saturday night supper and it was so good we rearranged our plans and came for Sunday brunch. The cooking is novel, inventive twists on old standards, or brand new dishes from they chef. His wife runs the front of the house with wit, charm, and exuberance. You can’t go wrong!
