The food was wonderful. It is an excellent location. The restaurant is hip, fun, and has a great vibe.
The service was unusually strange. Our waiter was never around. Many other staff had to help us and seemed put out. We’ve been here many times before so this is not normal. Definitely had us scratching our heads wondering what was wrong.
Food and service were good but the noise level was awful on a Tuesday night. Had to practically lip read to hear my friend 2 feet across the table from me.
Delicious food, big portions, high quality service. The cocktails were also yummy.
Our food was great and the service was excellent as well. Good wine suggestions! Sat outside on the patio as it was a beautiful night.
It was a crowded Monday night, and we were seated in the bar area by the kitchen- with full view of the very ugly area as there was no door. Music was way too loud for a dinner crowd. Food was so so- not what I expected from the reviews on Open Table and recommendations from friends. With all of the choices in Alexandria and DC, I would have a drink here, and dine elsewhere.
Waitress spilled a glass of iced tea on my husband...no compensation in the bill. Walked out with a wet sock and shoe. BBQ rib tips were salty. Crab cake was average at best for $18. Fish tacos had one little piece of fish per taco. Pecan pie serving was small. Best part of the meal was the icebox cake. Would only return to enjoy drinks upstairs. Second time here and it was like being at two different restaurants.
I was on a date, and we really enjoyed our time together and at the restaurant - great ambiance!! I had been there before, but he had not. There was some confusion with our reservation. I had put in for a table for 4 only to reserve us a spot. I called Virtue Feed and Grain to explain myself on Sunday night after making the Monday reservation on Open Table for 4 people. They said it would be fine for 2 people - that they would make it work. When my date arrived, it was troubling for him to experience some confusion. I arrived a few minutes later, and he did have a table for 2-4 people, and it was just perfect - up on the second floor. I spent years as a business meeting planner, so I know how tough communicating anything can be. I would give the rating outstanding if we had not had that small snafu in the beginning. My date said he did not feel they were as welcoming as they could have been. I do know that when we left, there were security for some dignitary, so perhaps the staff was on edge with that party coming in. I had my back to the room the whole time as did my date, so we wondered who it was that was there :) We were well-protected with all the security - that was kind of fun. Thank you, Open Table. I hope this helps. We were there only for appetizers and a glass of Reisling. The appetizers were good - the best was the mac and cheese! The wine was great, and I have eaten entrees there before and loved them. It is a great place!! It reminds me of a place in Nashville!!!
Beautiful venue, excellent service. Add a few healthier options and it would be 5 Star.
The food was delicious. Everyone at my table ordered something different and each dish was better than the next. The atmosphere was comfortable and the servers were very friendly. Overall, it was a great experience and I will definitely be going back!
We had family from out town that wanted to go out for a nice brunch. Everyone ordered different things off of the menu and we all loved what we ordered. Prices were fair and service was always around without having to get in your face. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who was looking to get brunch or lunch in Old Town!
We had an 8pm reservation, but when we arrived were told it was running 10-15min late. After watching people getting sat around us 30 min later I went up to ask and they said they called me. I then pulled out my phone with no missed calls. Funny thing is we were standing in front of the host stand, why didn’t they just let us know as they did others? When we were sat we were put at a high top table in the bar section. Not a great first start. Server was great and the food was pretty good. Just hard to enjoy after being seated 30 minutes late.
Not impressed. Food was so-so and service subpar.
This was my 2nd time here. The service was great. Eddie was our server and provided us with excellence service. He listened and provided us with suggestions for our meal. If you are a meat and potatoea person try the Porterhouse steak meal. It was awesome. For appetizers either the crab dip or the calamari. We will be back.
I made a reservation for dinner last week (4/7/18) and was disappointed when I came in and had to wait for a while. In other words, the hostess said she would call me but I didn't receive a call. I had to come back to the restaurant after 20 minutes to ask her about my reservation and she sat us immediately. But I had to come back and remind her about my reservation.
Great food, attentive service and good quality. The chicken wings are worth the mess! Made reservation on Opn Table and seated right away on a busy Friday night.
Excellent food with fantastic service. Our server was very helpful and patient with us. He was extra careful because a member of our party had a nut allergy. It was a crazy busy Friday night and he was warm and very professional. We will return again. It is a favorite!
Packed to capacity with a line. Everything was delightful including service. Thank you.
Vacation. Great place, great food, great service.
Great experience all around. Scott, our server was top notch. Additionally the manager Brian (or Ryan?) was attentive and friendly and saw us only because he was checking and welcoming customers like us.
First timers at Virtue Feed and Grain, staying in Alexandria, on our way back to New England. Food was good, but not exceptional. My husband and I had martinis, but they were very meager. We had dinner at a lovely restaurant in Savannah the night before, and cocktails were twice the size for the same price. Virtue was quite loud for a Sunday night. We would probably choose another restaurant in Alexandria, if we return.
Service was great & food was amazing!
Even though we had a reservation we had to wait over 20 minutes for our table.
“Energetic” is not the right word for the noise level. It was distractingly loud. The food was fine. Perhaps the hype about the restaurant raised our expectations too much, but we found the food, well, just...fine.
Food and service was excellent. Loved the ambiance and vibe - would be great for a date night. Only negative was the noise level - so loud that it was difficult to have a meaningful conversation.
Neat atmosphere and our waitress was very nice. The food was good but not outstanding. They got my order wrong, and it was expensive, but overall good experience.
This was my first time here and I absolutely loved it! The food is delicious and the staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. Location is awesome as well, right by the water and lots of cute fun shops around! I’ll be back for sure!
Our server was amazing. He made our day special! Highly recommend this place. The burgers we fantastic
The ahi tuna salad was about the best salad I’ve ever had! Blood orange memosia & strawberry dessert lmaginative & great. Thanks
We were excited to try this place because of all the positive reviews but my experience was just okay. Started with a very wobbly table, rustic is okay but wobbly is just annoying. We ordered from the happy hour menu and order crab dip, fish tacos and chicken Caesar salad which was pretty good. The signature cocktails, green tea spritzer was refreshing & the Blackberry rye mule was ok but the flavors were lost by the overpowering rye whiskey. Now to dessert, we order the “strawberry cobbler” with vanilla ice cream and received a assorted berry shortcake with chocolate and whip cream in a cup. We asked our server about the strawberry cobbler & this didn’t match the description in the menu & she was very nice to take it back to the kitchen & exchange with the pecan pie instead. When she returned with the pie she informed us that the chef told her, “that was what strawberry cobbler looks like”. Really? I think menu descriptions should resemble what comes out of the kitchen. No mention of whip or chocolate on what we order but that’s what we were served. If the dish was mind blowing delicious then a chef might get away with making snide arrogant claims of his/her creations but this was not even close. Our server apologized & blamed the confusion on the many recent menu changes. Oh, the pecan pie was similar to a grocery store quality, average at best.
I love the décor upstairs! The curtains hanging between the tables are lovely! I felt like comfort food and had your mac and cheese. It was delicious!!
The food was perfectly fine but nothing to write home about, nothing extraordinary. We all had salads, the crabcake sandwich, the duck meat loaf, and the fish tacos. Nothing to complain about but nothing innovative or wow about it. The bartender did not know how to make a classic Manhattan and I had to return my drink twice only for the waitress to bring the same drink back saying that she did not know why the bartender would not make it. When she brought my second “non-Manhattan”, which I thought was to replace the first one which I didn’t finish, when the bill came I was charged for both. Fun place but probably would not go back.
My friend and I were visiting from out of town to celebrate both her 30th birthday and landing her first job as a physician after too many years of medical school. The great folks at Hotel Indigo suggested Virtue as the perfect place for an enthusiastic meat eater ( her) and a seasoned vegetarian (me).
When we first arrived, I thought it would be too loud for conversation while eating, but as soon as were were seated, it was obvious that that was not the case. We were able to talk in a normal voice and had no issues.
As for the food- wow. We had the best Mac and cheese I’ve ever had in my life. Seriously. The vegetable of the day was brussel sprouts and I could have eaten just that and nothing else and been completely fulfilled in life. :) My friend was able to secure the last lamb dish of the night and was happily surprised with what it was prepared with ( was that an apricot?). The lamb itself melted in her mouth and she claimed it was the perfect amount of everything. I had the sweet potato tacos- the combination of spices worked beautifully with the sweetness of the sweet potatos. I was happy.
Our server was incredible. She was happy to recommend her favorite entrees ( thank you!) and was attentive to our needs ( yes, please , another drink ). When she discovered it was Selena’s birthday, she bought us a slice of the flourless chocolate cake. I don’t have enough words left to adequately describe the near-orgasmic experience of that chocolate cake. Without the generosity of our server, I’d likely live the rest of my life knowing something was missing. Truthfully, I’ve been searching for recipes so I can share it with the rest of my family.
Thank you, Virtue, for a blissful gastronomic experience.
First visit, 3 of us and a 10 year old. A bit of a wait for our reservation time but worth it! We sat on the 2nd floor, nice atmosphere. The food was great and portions large, I don't think any of us cleaned our plates. Service was great and very accommodating. Highly recommend.
I was new to this location and I love the way it looked inside. There's an downstairs and upstairs dining and bar full area. I made reservations for brunch and was seated upstairs. I like the atmosphere and the food was good. The server on the other had was a bit overlooked. I order a mimosa with my chicken & waffles and they are served in the smallest wine glass. My meal napkin was still in my lap and I was still eating. My server "Lawrence" came over and didn't even notice that my glass empty. Instead of asking me if I wanted another refill, he asked was I still working? Clearly I was still eating and was waiting get another refill so I could finish my meal. The next time he came around, he asked if I was all done. I made reservations simply not to be rushed. When a customer is done, I would've place my napkin on the table and asked for a check. Other than that, I hope to return to a better caring server on the next visit.
We got there for our reservation and was seated promptly at a nice table to talk .. Everything we had was delicious from drinks to entrees.. the server was very inattentive and never came back to ask about a refill or 2nd drink and after we had eaten no mention of coffee or dessert just gave us the check .. I would go back as we had a nice time and enjoyed our meal .. but was disappointed w our server ...
Wonderful brunch! The Bloody Mary was fantastic!
Would have enjoyed our evening very much except the noise level was very disruptive to the point we ate quickly and left. Even my 19 yo college student grandson commented that the noise level was terrible. The food was creative and enjoyable. Our server was outstanding, taking the time to explain any entry or side if asked and was responsive during the entire evening. The ambiance "looked" welcoming but the noise ruined it all. This is the reason I cannot recommend this restaurant.
Food was excellent
Very good food and excellent service. The only suggestion to offer is to turn the lights up a bit in the dining room. It was so dark we were unable to read the menu without a flashlight.
Avoid at all cost. Not very good. Surprised at how busy they were, probably because it was a Friday night.
