Virtue Feed & Grain Ratings and Reviews
If only the chef was working in a restaurant, not a bar. Noise level so bad that we could not even hear ourselves at the same table. Server either overworked or didn't care, as we were left for nearly 20 minutes when we first sat and had to call the server over more than once. Busboys walked by the table time after time, stopping to look at empty plates, but never took them. These are large bar spaces with a few tables stuck in as well, but too close and clearly an afterthought. Don't come here thinking you're going to be able to speak with your fellow diners. Perhaps carry-out?
With a mostly empty restaurant on a chilly evening, the hostess seated us at the table closest to the door and brought over a portable heater. Needless to say, we asked to move within 5 minutes.....Our appetizers of spiced cauli and the hummus platter, along with main courses of fish tacos, bratwurst, and especially the braised port shank, were all well prepared and delicious. Dessert was also great. Prices were reasonable and service was outstanding.
The Virtue Bloody Mary is one of my favorites in the DMV. I haven't had a dish on the menu that I haven't enjoyed, though I usually go for brunch. Sometimes the portion sizes run large, so come hungry or ask how big the dish is before ordering if you're not starved or want to share.
Second time we've been--still incredibly loud. Service was outstanding (again). We ordered the crab cakes which turned out extremely fishy. Everything else was still wonderful. The waiter was apologetic and offered to replace the dish also, which was very nice of him.
Stopped here on way to airport. Fabulous food, I had the salmon, and great service. I originally went to lunch and left my luggage there to walk around the historic district right around the corner. When i discovered my flight was delayed I went back and had a cup of coffee and desert. Lovely
We generally like this place and have been many times. This night they were a little of their game. Service was slow and choppy. Then they tried to rush us out at the end. Very busy noisy and crowded. Food was good but service suffered this night. But we will go back. It's generally very good.
Originally had a 3 person reservation, but had to add 2 more at the last minute. For a Friday night at Virtue, I knew this would be an issue (especially given the inauguration/women's march weekend). but the hostess happily & promptly accommodated. Also was provided the prized area upstairs behind the scrim so the predominant high noise level was much lower than usual. Additionally, we had extraordinarily exceptional service: timing, tempo, menu-aware, gracious...a perfect evening for our out-of-town guests.
The Mezze appetizer was terrific - fresh and very flavorful. The kale roast chicken salad, however, was only OK. There was little flavor, and it was very cold when it was served. Had clearly been pre-assembled and kept cold. While some taste developed as It warmed to room temperature, there was little to recommend it except its large portion. The service was very good and attentive, but the noise level and the very dim lighting made conversation difficult.
This was the first time we went for Sunday brunch and we will be back. It was great to see the restaurant in the daylight and to be able to talk at a normal volume with our friends, as dinner time is lively and not well-lighted. The Bloody Mary cocktails are superb and the entrees are delicious, all topped off by superb service.
The food was excellent and the service was good, if anything our server was borderline over-attentive. However i had a difficult time holding a conversation with my dining companion due to the extremely high noise level upstairs -- despite sitting at a table on the far opposite side of the room from the bar & and raising our voices to try and be heard over the din. We were looking for a moderately energetic Friday evening dinner spot but this was too much. I suspect that the shape of the ceiling reflects all the noise back in an undesirable way and consequently everyone in the room ends up shouting. I have always sat downstairs on previous visits and the noise level is more reasonable in that area. I recommend requesting downstairs seating unless you're going out with your happy hour crew.
This was my first time there and I chose it because I liked the look of the menu. I made a 6:00pm reservation for Friday night. We got there right about 6 and were seated immediately, which was great. The location is fantastic, and the restaurant has a great ambiance. I like the exposed brick and wood decor - it really fit the place well. I also liked the dimmer light, as it made it feel intimate and also seemed to fit with the historical feel. My friend and I both had the Virtue burger with fries. The burger was cooked perfectly, and the fries were great. The only way it could have been better is if they offered gluten free buns, as my friend is allergic to gluten. (But I will note that they do offer a couple gluten-free options.) It was my birthday, so I also had the chocolate flourless cake, which was divine. I will definitely go back. It's will be my go-to Old Town restaurant to take out-of-town guests to.
Great restaurant, have dined here many times, but was first time to be shown a table upstairs. the upstairs area is definitely a lot roomier with the higher ceilings, and there were couch/sofa seating areas as well as a nice long bar. Private area curtained off on one side. The downstairs is more noisy, and feels a little crowded, also children and families. There is a bar on the ground floor as well. Kitchen is on the ground floor, so service is faster than upstairs. The food has always been great here, no hit or miss. Edamame guacamole is great for starters, the jerk chicken which is very spicy was a great entree. Good selection of wines and mixed drinks. Mixed drinks a bit on the weaker side. Prosecco on tap. Good atmosphere and a lively date night atmosphere.
Virtue was recommended by a good friend of mine. I was visiting from LA and my friend was coming in from the VA Beach area, but we are both originally from neighboring PG County. I received a coupon redeemable for a 1/2 order of their grilled wings for FREE! Management came over and gladly accepted the coupon without hesitation. The wings paired well with our bottle of red wine. Our entrees came out at a timely fashion and our server was very attentive. I had the pork tacos and my friend had the boar burger. VERY tasty and seasoned to perfection! Great dining experience overall and will definitely come back for more. Looking to try out the happy hour as well. Thanks again!
We celebrated an anniversary with three generations. Everyone enjoyed the brunch menu. Portions were very generous. Service was delightful and attentive. We sat upstairs at a large table - very comfortable for five. We were thrilled with the peanut butter pie that we shared for dessert! Would definitely recommend!
This place was a blind guess for visiting Old Town, and we couldn't have been happier. We got a perfect table at 10pm on a Friday night, had amazing burgers (The Umami Burger is a must) and had some lovely cocktails. The service was great, and the noise level was sort of just-right for a bar/dinner: loud enough to feel boisterous, but we could still hear one another fine. Will definitely return on our next trip to the area.
My boyfriend and I recently moved to Alexandria and every month have a date night at a different non-chain restaurant in town. This has by far been our favorite. The atmosphere is very cozy with booth and couch seating and rustic decorations. Our server was very friendly and eager to recommend menu items. He also asked if there were any food allergies before even taking our orders which was impressive to us, even though we do not have allergies. The food was all very delicious and came out pretty quickly. I really enjoyed that they use all local ingredients which inhabited the "hole in the wall" experience. Absolutely will go back.
It was surprisingly good for New Year's Eve. Everyone was clearly running around but we didn't have to wait long for anything and the food specials were very tasty. We didn't feel rushed to leave our table. I actually liked Virtue better for this holiday experience than on a regular day.
We have been going to Virtue and Grain for a couple of years now.. New year's eve was not a good experience at all. Music was very loud and hard to tell what they were playing. Food was really bad, their burgers are usually good, it was not this time. Cauliflower was not good at all either. Not sure what happened to take the quality down that evening. Hope it is not permanent.
Come here often for HH, hit & miss with a friendly bar staff tho (not interested in getting to know you, your name, small talk, doesn't recognize you if you're a repeat customer etc) - food is awesome. Too loud for conversation. We came with another couple for dinner on NYeve...seated upstairs (BRENDA was awesome!, great service!) beautiful setting, but it was struggle to hear each other because the backaground music was unusually loud. I look around and saw everyone to be leaning over each other doing the same thing! Great food overall, tho I thought the fish tacos was way below par.
