Virtue Feed & Grain Ratings and Reviews
Went here on a Saturday evening with my girlfriend before a show at the MGM.
Cocktails were excellent, particularly the Prince of Persia with the saffron-infused tonic. They also had a good selection of local beers which I always appreciate.
Mac 'n cheese with the smoked gouda was some of the best I've ever had. The wild boar burger and crab cake sandwich were solid, nothing to write home about.
Service was very good for it being a Saturday night, never had to wait longer than 5 minutes to order anything.
The decor was really cool, lots of old wood and leather, probably looks even better in the daytime. I liked the low lighting for dinner. The place is a little crammed for me for a date night, tables were too close together. Noisy too, but that's expected for a Saturday.
Value is on par with other places in Alexandria. Dinner for two and two drinks apiece will set you back $100.
Overall, we were happy. Would definitely eat here again.
This is only my second or third time to VF&G. Upon entering, it smelled like the place had recently been cleaned, but not the squeaky clean good smell (only negative of the evening). Therefore, I'm super-happy to have been seated upstairs -- the ambiance of which I also preferred. Olivia (?) was our waitress and she was excellent. She was very attentive to my food allergy, and for that I am always immensely grateful. We enjoyed our meal!
Bad service. Sat us at a table next to the kitchen which was super loud. Service was slow, forgot our drink orders, and not accommodating to my wife’s vegan diet even though I told them when I made the reservation that she was vegan. My chair at the table was a bar stool so I was seated a good foot above my wife who was on the padded bench. My fish tacos were cold and overcooked. All in all, it was a pretty bad meal all around.
this was my second and last visit to this restaurant. my first visit was to celebrate a friends milestone bday...the food was pre-selected, and frankly, tasted precooked. i remember the cesar salad being the most bland thing ever—not a hint of garlic, anchovy, lemon or salt...my steak was tough and also very underseasoned.
my boyfriend has loved this place in the past, so we gave it another shot. again, the meal was just not right. we unfortunately/inadvertently came in during restaurant week, but as a former veteran of the business (20+ years), this is the week when a place should shine.
the noise level was also beyond comfortable, and my friends and i had to shout at each other to be heard.
our server was great—very personable and efficient. he was the one good thing about the night.
there are too many other places to eat for me to give this place another go...very disappointing.
Our server, Sam, was very helpful with choices. He was very knowledgeable. The lights were a little dim. I noticed people using phone lights to read menus. But food and service were great and I have recommended to several folks already. Thanks for a wonderful evening.
Pros: The food was awesome - well cooked, large portions and hot when it arrived at the table. The service was exceptional, attentive but not hovering. The drinks were cold and refreshing.
Outside tables available
Cons: The lighting was a bit dark, hard to read the menu and the music was a too loud to have quiet / intimate dinner conversation.
The pro's definitely outweigh the cons and we will be going back there!
The arrival / seating was good and we enjoyed the happy hour menu (pork taco’s were a hit with everyone). The Scotch eggs were a delicious new treat. Food and drink delivery were prompt and efficient. The duck meatloaf was deliciously decadent. We didn’t have room for dessert but there’s always next time!
Staff was nice and attentive. The service was fairly quick and the food very good. We loved the smoked salmon burger and the steak and fries. The only bad thing was that the music from the private party upstairs was way too loud and the only way to communicate was literally yelling, we actually sat right next to each other to hear better. Other than that, we enjoyed the experience.
We enjoyed our date night here, and the lively atmosphere on a Saturday night. The food and drinks were delicious, and the customer service from host desk to servers was great. My only complaint was the lack of choices for vegetarian/vegans - there are only 2 entree options. I had the sweet potato tacos, which were very nice. My husband loved his Umami burger and would've happily eaten any of the variety of meat choices the menu offered, but with only 2 meal choices for me, we won't be regular customers here.
