Vincenzo Trattoria - Idaho
A few words from the owner:
In 1969, I arrived in Los Angeles and I immediately noticed that the food served was much different tasting than the food that my family prepared in Italy. Upon questioning the restaurant owner regarding the non-traditional meals we were serving, I was told the food must be made according to American taste.
My commitment to you: I pledge to bring an authentic Italian dining experience, demonstrating the same passion I’ve had since the beginning.
The carbonara was excellent, and before that we had a wonderful chopped caprese salad with delicious garden tomatoes. The service was exceptional. We will definitely return.
My mom was in town from Bend and wanted Italian. I searched YELP and got a few options. When I looked at Open Table and saw we could get a reservation here we booked it. We were so pleasantly surprised by the small, mom & pop strip mall restaurant. Vincenzo came out and spoke to us about the specials, his wife was genuine and provided dinner ingredients from her garden. The best pasta I’ve had in Boise hands down.
A gem in a shopping mall. Not to overlook. And I am part Italian. The calamari was best I have had outside of Italy. Light dusting, very tender, cooked fast in hot hot oil . Even warmed up second day better than most on day 1!
Food was good. Only issue was they charged $29.00 for Chicken Marsala. That’s very expensive.
This is one of those restaurants where you are so taken with the authenticity, flavor and experience that you want to go back and trying out all other items on their menu!
They were very careful about seating and social distancing. The food was excellent. The service was great.
Went here for the first time a few nights ago. The food was amazing. I lived in Rome for awhile and this place serves authentic Italian food. The owner greeted us and made suggestions. We started with the shrimp and calamari appetizer. The calamari was incredibly tender. I had the carbonara which was light and the best I have had since being in Italy. My husband had the special squid ink paste and also delicious.
In reading other reviews that were negative I would say that if you are looking for thick Americanized Italian food this might not be your place. But it’s the best Italian food I have ever had in Boise.
Our service was also spot on. The restaurant is not overly fancy but the food makes it worth a special date night.
We've been dining here since they first opened. Still the best pasta in town. If you like lobster, you'll love the Maine lobster with black squid ink pasta. The fried calamari and shrimp appetizer is always tender and perfectly done.
This is now our favorite restaurant. We loved the food and the service. My husband had the seafood spaghetti which he wants next Friday...and I had the pizza, which was delicious.
Everything was wonderful there. We had trouble getting our check split up, and actually 1 card was run twice. The problem was however corrected. We will be going back! The food was wonderful and the wine recommendation was spot on.
Only authentic Italian food in Boise. Will keep returning.
Best Italian food I’ve ever had. Food is authentic and service was amazing!!! Pizza and pasta is fresh and the conversation with the owner was delightful! Give it a try!
Valentines and husbands retirement!
My wife and I had the pleasure of a Valentines Day dinner here. Food was very good, would recommend it to anyone. The service was European speed (slow) but the check came out quickly, like they wanted to turn over your table. It was over an hour to get our food and only minutes to get the check once we finished the food. Decore is very basic and chairs are hard. My credit card was not returned after payment and thus later had to call to see if they still had my credit card. They were a little confrontational about not finding it, but later called me to say that they had found it. Meanwhile I had called my credit card company to cancel it and get another (so the security of it wasn't in question). Now I have to spend a lot of time re-settting up auto pays, etc.
A nice little Italian spot that you could dress up or down for. My dish was good and enough for leftovers. My husband’s carbonara was fine but not great.
Excellent food at great prices. Classic Italian. Great reasonably priced Italian wine list. Very fresh olive oil! Place is small so reservations recommended. The absolute best calamari I have ever had *Frito Misto!! I get that every time we go there and never disappoints! A Boise must! Vincenzo is in the house checking on you, too.
Our first visit on a date night. The restaurant is a simple setting in a strip mall, nicely decorated. We did make a reservation, which is definitely needed. Our initial greeting by the hostess/waitress was brusque as we were told twice to "wait right there". But understandable, as she was concerned about taking care of a table of 8. As our evening went on we observed another party not seated even though a setting for six and another table for 4 went unused. My wife requested a Diet Coke, but was brought a Diet Pepsi. She stopped our waitress before the drink was poured. I was disappointed that we were charged anyway even after I deducted it from the 15% tip, noting that we had requested a Diet Coke.
However, Chef Vincenzo did greet us warmly and explained the evening specials. As promised, the food was very good. Likely very authentic, but we have never been to Italy to make that statement. I had one of the specials, Lobster Pasta with Ink noodles - a Venetian recipe, and it was amazing. The sauce and spices were wonderful and the pasta was indeed "al dente" and piping hot. I have never before had the pleasure of being served a pasta meal that tasted so fresh. I had a glass of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, a simple, but very tasty Italian red wine. My wife had the Pappardelle alla Bolognese. (tomato sauce, lean pork, beef and veal), also very good with excellent seasoning. We were pleasantly surprised that our entrees were served in a very reasonable amount of time. The complementary bread, fresh from the oven, was a very nice start.
Hi Mick, Thank you for your comment unfortunately that night we where short of three employes and we only had new one on training I was alone in the kitchen and my wife in the dining room the table of 6 was reserved on Open Table for 7:30 and they never came or did cancel so I had to turn down diners because that reservation, we did the best we could also thank you for your compliment on the food.I hope to see you soon and again sorry for the inconvenience. Regards Vincenzo
The service was very poor and unorganized and seems to be that one lady took all the orders while others only did drinks. The didn’t charge me for one of my beers and when I told her she added a charge for two more beers. They need to change their wait staff, processes and likely bring in people who have waiting experience. The food was ok. I don’t see us going back.
When this spot first opened, I immediately considered it the best spot for pasta in Boise. I'm happy to declare that it still is! The black squid ink pasta special included an extremely generous portion of Maine lobster (and no shells to mess with). How do they get that calamari and shrimp appetizer so light and crispy every time?
Veal Marsala was $29.95! It was their special that was nothing special. It needed salt and the sauce was reduced to the point where I could barely taste the Marsala.
Before a concert
My boyfriend and I decided to try Vincenzo Trattoria. I love Italian and always love trying new restaurants. The decor is lack luster but who cares if the food makes up for it. Well, it didn’t! The service was terrible. A very nice young man seated us and stated he would be back to take our order. Then a young girl comes over for our drink order. We got our drinks and then waited about 20 minutes and asked the young man if he could take out order. He stated the head waitress will be doing that. The head waitress the woman who made the pizzas. She came over started to take our order but I had a question regarding a substitution on a pasta, instead of A pasta can I get B pasta. She said I don’t think so and walked away. At this point we were ready to walk out. Then the owner comes over and I ask my question and he says no problem. We then have to wait for the server to return, 10 more minutes. We order and ask for more drinks. Take another 15 for our drinks. The food comes out, yay! It was terrible! Severely undercooked pasta and zero flavor. The owner/chef comes over and asks how the food is and I mention the undercooked pasta. He tastes it and says that’s how he likes it. I like al dente but the pasta still had crunch to it. He tells me it will keep cooking. I want to eat it now so I take a few bites, I just can’t. We get our bill, pay, and leave. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone!
Big selection of well prepared pasta dishes. Carbonara was very authentic. Most pasta dishes run around $20.
Food was excellent. Great wine selection. Service was pleasant. This place fills up quickly and is not very big so definitely make a reservation. It was fun to meet Vincenzo as he popped out of kitchen to check with diners.
Great authentic Italian food with wonderful service
Food was not as good as usual. And it felt like we were being rushed through dinner. But it was a holiday so perhaps there were issues related to the holiday. We will give it another try at some point.
The food was good and served very hot. Vincenzo personally visited each table. However, the waitstaff was not sufficiently familiar with the individual entree ingredients. Service didn't meet the quality of the food or the pricing.
Excellent authentic Italian food. Reminded us of our time in Rome. A very pleasant surprise in a strip mall.
Great food. Nice surprise for our first visit. We'll definitely put this on our regular rotation. Highly recommend.
This place is a great find. Authentic Italian food, lots of seafood, delicious sauces, and homemade fresh pasta. Friendly service, personally overseen by the 72 year old Italian owner. Great experience from start to finish!
Vincenzo’s Trattoria is unique in a good way. Vincenzo is Italian American, a former US Marine and long time restaurateur and chef from Santa Monica where he had a successful restaurant for many years. His wife Xuefeng (pronounced like “chiffon”) is Chinese. Together they make Vincenzo’s what it is: the most authentic Italian restaurant in Boise. I am fortunate to have lived and traveled in Italy extensively. In my experience, going to Vincenzo’s is as close to Italy as one can get in Boise. The pasta is made in house, the ingredients are fresh, the wine list is extensive, the tiramisu is exquisito! There are daily specials often featuring fresh seafood. Vincenzo and Xuefeng have a hand in everything and the food shows their combined attention to detail. One can wish there was an outdoor patio under a grape arbor..but you can’t have everything. As it is, I’m grateful to have a place to go for comfort food, Italian style. Grazie and buon appetito!
Outstanding food! Service tends to be slow. Will definitely go back for the authentic Italian food!
Fresh, cooked to order. Excellent wine selection!
This is one of our favorite restaurants in Boise. The food is consistently authentic, fresh, and delicious. The wait staff is attentive and friendly, and we always enjoy chatting with the owner, Vincenzo.
Excellent home made pasta. I ordered the spaghetti with clams and the clams were delicious. This was my first visit, but it will definitely not be my last.
