I was disappointed that the menu was the same as when I dined at Villon 2 months ago...but the food was still excellent (new menu is supposed to come out soon). The service wasn't at good as last time because there seemed to be quite a few new staff members. An item on the other diner's tab was wrong which she pointed out to the waitperson and the waitperson didn't apologize but got a bit of a snarky look on her face. It took quite a while to fix it.

Hard to find how to get into the restaurant. Not their fault; the hotel has to regulate the comings and goings of people, because of the mixed-use neighborhood it’s in. Once you find it, the hotel lobby is beautiful, along with the restaurant, which is adjacent to the lobby. Nice, lively atmosphere, food was very nice. We had the Chef’s Menu, which had several delicious courses, especially the duck course. Instead of the $55 wine pairing I had a cocktail and then a glass of the Presqu’ile Pinot Noir, which was wonderful. Great location for the Orpheum and the Strand Theater, but the Chef’s Menu took a full two hours and we had to rush to our performance.

The food was either under or over cooked. Some of the items presented should have been on a childrens menu. It was way to expensive for the food we got. The waiter was amazing! I felt like I was going to get mugged waiting for a taxi outside.

Villon seems to be a work in progress. The staff was helpful, but there was a lot of overlap, particularly when it came to the wine service. Sometimes only one of our wine glasses was filled, leaving the other almost empty, and though the sommelier told us the corkage fee, another staff person came along to tell us that as well. The food was good, but had some flavor combinations that didn’t quite come together. The abalone appetizer and Duck breast entree stood out, however, and are worth another visit on that basis alone. The ambience was cozy and inviting, even with high ceilings. It reminded me of a French brasserie, and was just off the lobby, so the bar could draw people in I hope it improves - being in the mid-Market area is a challenge, but worth it if they can bring up that stretch street.

We were a group of four who all loved the food at Villon. We had the Chef's Tasting Menu. Every course that arrived was thoughtfully presented and curated for its tastes, textures and smells, from the amuse bouche to its entree. We were pleasantly surprised with the second course of abalone and king trumpet mushrooms--so delicate with its clear tapioca pearls and slim slices of abalone and mushrooms, yet accompanied with an earthy chicken broth. We were also taken with the smoked sheep's milk cheese in the charcoal grilled asparagus course. The duck breast glazed in honey was delicious, but the darker piece was not as tender; the other components (particularly the rhubarb and cocoa nibs) worked well with the duck. Unfortunately, we had to leave before our dessert course to go to an opera. We will return for an encore though!

They need to work on cleaning the table so it's not sticky before seating guests, and reducing the marijuana smoke that comes from the street through the open patio door, which was rather obnoxious. My friends and I expected a more pleasant experience.

Villon does high tea right. The service was outstanding and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The down side was the sandwiches slightly dried out, as though they were left out for too long. The petit fours weren't my favorite and we ended up leaving a couple behind because we didn't enjoy them. The ambiance was great, tucked away at the back of the lobby. Even seated right next to another party we didn't feel crowded. I'd recommend it as one of the few better places for high tea in the Bay Area.

This was my first tea experience in America, and it was awesome; prior to this, I had only had tea in London and France so as you can see the expectations were set pretty high. First off, the hotel that Villon is located is gorgeous. Loved the vintage décor, the bar was really nice and the hotel itself was centrally located. The tea experience itself was wonderful. They have it from 2-5pm just outside the restaurant. The tea sandwiches and pastries were delish and of good quality, tea selection was nice and the ambiance a delight, however I would say the only thing that took away from the tea ‘experience’ is that they mixed it with other patrons having just a drink and/or lunch. I would’ve much preferred have all those doing tea in one area bc it just takes away from the ‘tea’ ambiance. Other than that, everything was great. Oh, service was also awesome; everyone was attentive to our needs.

We enjoyed our meal, but Villon needs a bit more time to work out some of the kinks now that they have reopened. The terrific stand outs that we ordered were: Parker House Rolls (although we weren't fond of the seaweed butter), the amuse bouche (chicken liver pate bite) and the steak tartar. The artichoke agnolotti and scallop & shrimp dim sum were good, but not great. When it came to the entree, all 4 of us got the same thing--the lamb shoulder which came with an onion gratin, smoked polenta and greens (it was made for two, so we got two of them). The lamb was very tasty but also very fatty and being smoked on redwood was very interesting. The greens were dressed to perfection and the onion gratin was delicious. But the polenta was too smoky. The cocktail list was fabulous and the wine list was limited (they seem to focus on cocktails) but wasn't marked up too much, which we appreciated. Our biggest reason for the "fair" ratings were the service and cost. It was as if it was our server's first day. And while our serve was very friendly, he wasn't very helpful when we asked specifically how the menu worked. And when we sought his counsel regarding whether we were ordering too much food, he said no. But we were. By far. We either needed fewer appetizers or only one lamb shoulder for the table. Second, while it's a minor thing, this is the restaurant of a chef who worked at a Michelen starred restaurant, so we think it's worth mentioning: flatware was placed in odd places and not on the correct side of the plates. Same with the glasses. And, our table was sticky. Otherwise, the restaurant's physical plant was very pleasant with a nice color and very high ceilings.

Went for lunch and very disappointed. Limited menu. Had the bream - came out lukewarm and literally tasteless. My friend had the club sandwich which we ended up sharing. Villon and the Proper Hotel are very pretty. Unfortunately, that was the best of our afternoon tea. The food ranged from boring to fine enough. The sandwiches didn't inspire --the bread was slightly dry-- and came on a flat plate rather than on the tiered stand. Some of the pastries were tasty and pretty. The service was the real kicker. We think they hadn't been trained well. We indicated on our reservations that one in our party had a nut allergy. Fortunately he doesn't become anaphylactic because he bit into a pastry with ground nuts in it. It took about 20 minutes before a server took our order and another 25 for an unsmiling and distracted server to drop it off. There were very long waits between serving and we had to flag down waitstaff to get our checks. When they came to pick up payment, one in our part left a $100 bill. The server asked her how much change she wanted back. Ummmm, you don't presume receiving a tip. Take a pass.

Overall experience was good, ambience was great, and food was excellent, probably the best sconce I've had in a long time and definitely the best sconce in the city! Service was OK, was expecting more attention to detail and more attentiveness to customer needs. My table only had 1 glass for water and I'm still waiting for them to bring me another (gasp!) Service was slow and then fast.. needed better pace.

I normally do not write reviews, but the service was so bad I want to alert others before considering afternoon tea at Villon/the hotel lobby. Setting: a total of 6 parties (all 4 people or less) at the restaurant, including mine, and 3 of those parties were already served and eating by the time we got there. So essentially, not busy. This is a Saturday. - 2:30pm check in for reservation and we are seated - 2:45pm water is served - 2:50pm I flag down a waiter to put in our order. We've been sitting there for 20 min. - 3:00pm pots of tea are served - 3:10pm I flag down the maitre d' to ask what is going on as we have no food 20 min after ordering (and 40 min after sitting). For tea service, I assume most things, like sandwiches, are already prepared and ready to serve. - 3:15pm Maitre d' comes back with a plate of tea sandwiches with no apology or explanation. Sandwich bread is dry and confirms that they been prepared/cut and sitting. - 3:25pm Waiter clears sandwich serving plate. - 3:35pm I flag down a waiter to ask about the sweet course. He gestures in the direction of the kitchen and says it is coming. - 3:40pm Tea cakes/desserts come (again, under the assumption that these are pre-made and pre-cut, it's unclear why this takes so long) - 3:55pm We finish and ask for the bill - 4pm Maitre d' asks how everything was, we respond with fine. Only at that point, I suppose he notices the experience was poor and tries to smooth things over with an offer of some tea cakes to take home. We decline. The service was so unbelievable that I kept checking my watch to track the time elapsed. It was equally annoying and comical which is why I remember the level of detail above. Note that this is a review purely on service. I'm not factoring in taste within this review as that's subjective. I didn't love the sandwiches/cakes we got, but someone else could find them delicious. I would never come here again. Advice: if you dine here for afternoon tea, do not expect good service.
