Fun dinner at Villon. Loved the decor, and the interesting drink menu makes for great dinner conversations!
Menu is creative and food is delicious. Service is friendly and prompt.
Probably not kids friendly.
This is a hidden gem on Market St in the Proper Hotel just down the street rom the Orpheum Theatre. We ate here before going to see Hamilton. The made sure we were done by 6:30 for the 4 minute walk up the street to the theatre. Although this place serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, etc. The dinner was very good. Our waitress was excellent and really took care of us. She never missed a beat. We ordered the truffle butter rolls, dungeness crab salad and wagyu steak to share. The only negative was the salad because of the portion size. really small; about two bites. Cocktails were some of the best. Old fashion was one the best.
Food was fine, nothing special. Service was very good however and despite not being in the best neighborhood the restaurant is in a nice setting.
great food, and servers were very attentive to our theater timeline. Every dish was delicious!!
The Villon is the perfect place for a cocktail or dinner before your theater show. The food is delicious and the service is attentive. They will ask you if you are catching a show and will make sure your food comes out without a hitch. Loved their chicory salad and Dungeness crab. Will want to go back to try their tea time service !
Loved the informal environment with wonderful service
I didn’t know what to expect but it was a delicious surprise. The food is unique and yummy - so many interesting flavors to experience. The service was great. The presentation superb. I loved every minute. It was fun!
This restaurant is conveniently located on the ground floor of the delightfully chic Proper Hotel at 7th & Market Streets. The location, along with the delicious and creative food, great service, and simple but beautiful decor make it a perfect place for a pre-or post-theater meal. We enjoyed our meals before the fantastic matinee Hamilton performance at the nearby Orpheum Theatre.
Disappointed in their corkage fee $25 for one person for one bottle of wine. All I did was drink out of one glass. The bottle didn’t continue to go work at contained a screw cap so there was really nothing to open it was difficult consider that in your putting Your next pricing together
We made a reservation before coming so expected to get a good seating. When we entered, it was only about 50% full. Seating was terribly uncomfortable and I got a cramp in the middle of my tea. Very deep sofa for me which made the table too high for me to eat comfortably while my partner was sitting across me in a chair that made him look uncomfortably taller than I was. We both felt the seating was weird and uncomfortable. We requested for a change of seating but were told that all the seats are the same. Oh well. It took a while for someone to come to us to give us the menu (which we had to ask for), and after a few minutes, we had to call someone to take our order. We gave our order during which we specified the dietary requirements and were told that another server would come up to us to explain the menu to us and the ingredients. Sounds fine. Time passes and another server comes to us and says "can i take your order please". We explain that someone has already taken our order and that we're already explained our dietary requirements there. But he insists that he will take our whole order again and no one has taken our order. Which was frustrating. Anyway, we ordered again with this guy. Our tea gets served. Tea was alright. We order a change of tea but nowhere does it state that you will be charged for a change of tea. The places I have been to have never charged for a change of tea. So I was surprised that this was not mentioned anywhere. Anyway, we ask about the food and the guy couldn't even name all the dishes for us so it was disappointing because we didn't know what we were eating. Food wasn't up to par. The madeleines and doughnut holes tasted stale like they were made a week before. The scones were dry. The ginger/cinnamon cookie tasted stale as well. I'm not sure if any of this was made in house. It tasted cheap and storebought for the most part. Sandwiches tasted fresher than everything else but they were average.
Happy to find an upscale eatery and hotel near the Orpheum Theater
It was a pleasure being in the lovely, cool, chic Proper Hotel. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. Villon was a pleasant experience. The only service faux pas was that they came and took one person's empty plate while the others were still eating. (Didn't even ask.) The food was fine but I would have liked more non-breakfast things on the menu. Three of us had the California egg plate. There was nothing robust about it, that's for sure. Small amounts on a big plate. The eggs and avocado were good. The "Garden Salad" was just plain odd, (a little too precious?), which would have been OK if it was tasty. A schmear of guacamole, a few pomegranate seeds, some hard squash chunks, a few mushrooms, and what might have been a potato. That doesn't denote garden salad to me and as I mentioned, it wasn't even tasty.
The person who had the egg sandwich liked that a lot.
Ordered the five course special menu on New Years Eve and the food was excellent. Highly recommend the “earthquake proof” cocktail. Server was very friendly, polite and professional. We never felt rushed but also never had to wait long for the next course or extra silverware.
We were there for the New Years Eve special menu #1. 4 courses plus amuse. excellent. I had been there before and loved it, and as always the service and details are among the best. New chef - a celeb who has yet to be announced. Each entry was stunningly displayed and just enough to both satisfy and also not exit the place with that overstuffed feeling. Final entry was Beef Wellington. We had a cocktail and 2 wines and the final bill EACH was about $215.00. Pricey YES, but a once in a time happening. Worth it!!
Excellent service from start to finish. The ambiance is lovely, calm, and stylish. Made me feel like I was in a Parisian cafe. The menu was able to accommodate all of our dietary needs (although no gluten free bread options but enough choice regardless). Vegan, omnivore, pescatarian...we all were satisfied. The food is standard fare and well done with quality ingredients. Not overly seasoned, just right. Close to the Orpheum, so we were grateful to have this lovely lunch before our matinee. Overall wonderful!
Everything was delicious! Relaxed place with scrumptious brunch and excellent gin fizzes!
Despite what appears to be a limited menu, everything we ordered was fantastic. We were seated on time and service was prompt. We will definitely return.
We love coming to the Villon before shows at the Golden Gate Theater. The restaurant is an incredible gem tucked away on Market Street. The service is top-notch, food is delicious and the ambiance is elegant.
Saw oysters in pictures on the website. They are only in dinner menu sometimes, so we missed it at lunchtime
They were very kind and accommodating!
Sweet waiter. Loved the creativity of ingredients and combinations in the food. Presentation was great. Love the old school glamour the place has.
The restaurant caters to people seeing a show. When we arrived at 5:05 we let the waiter know we were seeing Hamilton at 7. The waiter encouraged us to order dishes to share. We ordered all of the dishes at once so the kitchen could pace them. At 6:30 none of our entrees has arrived. When they started coming out at 6:40, they were not cooked through. Clearly the kitchen had rushed them out. The manager blamed the waiter for not telling us we would not have time for 3 courses. But the kitchen could have sent them in any order, at any time. To make matters worse, my husband left my pen with the check and the staff amazingly could not find it when he called the next day. We will not return.
Quaint. Cozy. Parisian. Whats not to love? The food. My Cobb-like salad was excellent. However, the Burger was terrible and needs a complete make over. The Bun was McDonald-esque, the patty was small and thin and not tasty. Also, when we arrived, the place smelled fishy. Low and behold, the table next to us was eating fish and chips, one of my favorite meals, so I took a glance. It looked un-appetizing and colorless and did not smell good. So, the food is suspect. I hope they will bring in a consultant immediately. Until then, I will wait 6 months before I go back.
Had a nice lunch here before seeing Hamilton. We walked over a mile to get here from our hotel and then had a short walk to the Orpheum for the matinee. Good food and service.
Christmas brunch, service was too slow. Waiter had to go back for “forgotten” elements of two different plates. Pan o chocolat was terrible.
Other than that everyone was really kind and nice. Food was great, the place is really hip and decoroation is amazing.
Absolutely delicious breakfast, great service and beautiful decor
When I first arrived the gentleman that greeted me was very nice and the lady that stopped by with menus was pleasant. The waiter (D) was not clear when asked a question about how the tea service worked if we could have multiple teas or a pot of coffee. He brought our tea and 30 plus minutes later we still did not have the afternoon tea we had ordered. We decided to leave and then the waiter appeared and asked why we were leaving; we explained that we had been waiting he said the food was on the way which was highly unlikely. I was so looking forward to afternoon tea but the service was below par...sad to say it was not a great Christmas eve!
Amazing as always!
Food and service were amazing!!! Highly recommend
Wonderful food but a bit pricey— perfect place for a meal pre theater. Staff very efficient and very mindful that we make it out on time
Our server was amazing, she knew we were heading to the theatre so she made our delicious food appear SO fast!
Fabulous service and amazing food. We went here before Hamilton and they were able to serve us and recommend best food choices while still giving ample time for desert and a casual walk to the theatre. Excellent restaurant and a wonderful experience.
Enjoyed our pre-theater dinner- my companion loved the engergetic/hip vibe of the restaurant/hotel. Waitstaff very attentive, allowing us to change because our first table was in the dark corner. Unusual items on the menu we didn't have a chance to try - we had amazing gnocci with mushrooms and kabocha squash. loved my mai tai, extensive cocktail list.
Cute vibe, overpriced, food was okay. Would probably not go back.
As a season ticket holder to Broadway SF, I'm always on the prowl for an excellent dining experience before heading to the Orpheum or Golden Gate theatres. Based on OpenTable reviews, I booked Villon at the Hotel Proper to indulge my best friend on her birthday. WHAT A TREAT! The cocktails were great - I loved the La Perla! The kale salad was amazing, as were the Brussels sprouts (balsamic reduction was delish!). The main we both chose was the sable fish and we were NOT disappointed. Cooked to perfection; sauce was delicious! PLUS our server was a 100% pro: fast, attentive service, personable but not intrusive, knowledgable about the drinks and menu, and sensitive to our curtain time. I will absolutely go back!
Love this place! They have a new chef, so the menu changed and I love it. Especially because there are more dessert options!
We originally came for afternoon tea but after looking at the brunch menu, we decided to do that instead and it was so worth it!
This is a wonderful option in a very difficult neighborhood. We've had brunch here twice before attending a matinee performance at the Strand theater nearby. Both times the food is excellent---unique and tasty brunch options. If you are looking for a nice restaurant in this area, there really is no competition.
Great service, but didn't realize the restaurant was literally in the lobby of the hotel and in that way it didn't feel like a fine dining experience. For the price, I'd definitely go elsewhere.
Excellent food in a comfortable, artsy space! Loved it!
