Love this place! They have a new chef, so the menu changed and I love it. Especially because there are more dessert options!
We originally came for afternoon tea but after looking at the brunch menu, we decided to do that instead and it was so worth it!
This is a wonderful option in a very difficult neighborhood. We've had brunch here twice before attending a matinee performance at the Strand theater nearby. Both times the food is excellent---unique and tasty brunch options. If you are looking for a nice restaurant in this area, there really is no competition.
Great service, but didn't realize the restaurant was literally in the lobby of the hotel and in that way it didn't feel like a fine dining experience. For the price, I'd definitely go elsewhere.
Excellent food in a comfortable, artsy space! Loved it!
The interiors are a top attraction here! Although my exquisitely upholstered bench was wobbly and kept going up and down like a see saw when the person next to me moved. The staff are super friendly and attentive. The menu is curated and focused and food well executed!
Next time will leave space for pudding!
Wonderful pre theater dinner! I will go back again for the halibut crudo!! One of the most delicious appetizers I have ever eaten!! Seriously 5 star!!! The chicken was very good, the Brussels sprouts were wonderful!! Loved everything!! It’s our third time there and will not be our last!!
Also a shout out to the loveliest server....so thoughtful and on top of our scheduled departure time!!
We were really impressed with the innovative offerings and with the sophisticated execution. The Hawaiian bread was terrific--both of us liked it best of the 7 things we got. The dessert (pannacotta) was like nothing I'd ever seen or tasted. And I was touched by a simple detail; I ordered chamomile tea at the end and received a large pot with looseleaf tea. Almost any restaurant would have served a teabag and likely just a cupful of water. The server was terrific--clear with his descriptions and really personable. He made the experience memorable. We admired the unusual decor. The only puzzler was why OpenTable wouldn't let me have a 6:00 reservation. We went at 5:45 instead, and the place was more than half empty the whole time. Anyway, we'll definitely return for dinner before our next playgoing experience in that area of SF.
Villon is 2 blocks from the Orpheum so if you are heading to a show it is a must. They have starters to share, including fried seared pork ribs, Shrimp wontons and other great choices. They have multiple appetizers and salads and entrees are excellent. I had the Sablefish (never heard of it) but it is FANTASTIC. Light and melts in your mouth. M had the roasted Chicken, debones and wonderful. We had a chocolate cheesecake dessert as well which we split. The foyer has couches and drink service before opening at 5 so arrive a bit early for a good wine list and unique cocktails. BTW, the Manhattan was nice.
Pre- theater brunch with family. We’ve been here many times and always love it.
Difficult neighborhood, but good Thanksgiving fare, and lovely staff.
It was a last-minute choice (everyone else was fully booked) and we were surprisingly pleased.
Everything was OK. Nothing was bad, but we had several other meals in SF that were much tastier and cost half the price.
While the lighting is sparse, it was extremely good otherwise. Great service, delicious food, and reasonable price.
Birthday tea. Absolutely delightful. Wii return
This was a very special experience for my date and me and I couldn't have picked a nicer place to spend a romantic evening. The Brussels sprouts and bacon were a delight, the best and most unique I've ever tasted for that traditional dish flavor profile. The steamed sablefish with smoked oyster cream was tangy and balanced, and the tonnarelli with shrimp and njuda featured a perfect balance of your flavors and ingredients so that each bite was an experience of its own.
Love the feel and decor. The cheeseburger is outstanding.
Oddly enough I’ve lived in the city for 12 years and this was the first time there! It was nice phenomenal! As you enter through the Proper hotel, you got see the wonderful architecture with mid century mod vibe done in a very warm and inviting way. The attention to detail was incredible. The restaurant was no different, it a smaller restaurant, low noise and very romantic. The service was impeccable as well as the food was delish! I fair price point! I will definitely go back!!
We loved the ambiance, service, and food! Everything was perfect from the moment we arrived. It was a very unique dining experience!
Very disappointed with this place. I chose it due to its proximity to the Orpheum Theatre and what a mistake... My sablefish was bland, with some type of mayonnaise looking sauce on it -- awful. My date's shrimp and noodle was equally bad. And the Brussels sprouts had a sickeningly sweet flavor that made them inedible. Aside from the location and nice decor, this place was a total waste of money.
The restaurant was so dark at the table where we sat that we had to use the flashlight on our phones to see the menu. And, we could not distinguish the food in our plates.
It was, however, very delicious.
good atmosphere and wine. menu options a little limited. can't recommend the steak.
Amazing wait staff. Excellent date day or date night place.
Everything was good and our waiter, Robert , was excellent. We enjoyed ourselves and there was no rush. We did have a reservation. Went for breakfast before our 1pm Hamilton play and were finished and out the door in less than an hour. We will be back!
First, if you've got tickets at the Orpheum, this is a fabulous place for brunch/lunch or dinner due to its close proximity. We enjoyed a Saturday brunch before seeing Hamilton. The Proper Hotel, where Villon is located, is a cool, MCM-ish boutique hotel with pretty amazing, vintage and cool artwork in the lobby. The restaurant is not very large (so reservations are definitely recommended) but it is stylishly beautiful. From the robin's egg blue paint on the walls, to the ruffled shades on the overhead lighting, to the AMAZING vintage bar cart used to store silverware and glasses, the dining space is just dreamy. On the recommendation of Robert, our waiter (who was very pleasant, sweet and funny), my friend and I both enjoyed the Brussels Sprout bowl. On top of a layer of bacon gravy with tomatoes sat a perfectly cooked sunny side up egg which was surrounded by crispy roasted Brussels Sprouts. I could have had a second because it was SO good. We enjoyed coffee with our meal, and a cocktail after. The Chicago (named after my home town) was just enough bubbly and sweetness to satisfy a craving for dessert. The Villon could very well become one of my favorite little hideaways in SF!
We waited for a very long time for our main courses. The server was very good. When the bill came I was definitely not happy. The food was good, but not great. Sorry to say. There was absolutely no excuse for having to wait 1/2 hour after our appetizers for the meal. The chef did not come by to apologize. The server did not apologize. No one apologized! The appetizers were unmemorable. My pasta was excellent. The chicken was excellent. But the Sable was boring. So, it's a true toss-up here as to whether I shall return. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, and my nature would be to give it one more shot. But, the worst, though, was the indecent lack of acknowledging the poor timing of the meal. That is such a simple fix! And yet, it did not happen.
The dishes we ordered were unusual and delicious. We have already made plans to return.
I wanted to like Villon more than I did. We had an unfortunate table that was in the line of traffic. Its a tiny but beautiful restaurant. The food was good, the menu is slight, the prices are high but the service was fantastic.
Love this out-of-the way, hidden dining establishment. Walking distance to the Orpheum Theatre. Quiet and intimate with exceptional food and service.
Seating and tables were not comfortable for trying to have tea but the food was good.
Visited Villon twice—the day of my reservation for a delicious brunch and the evening before for appetizers and cocktails In the lounge/lobby. The food and drinks were excellent in both instances and the service was wonderful as well. We all enjoyed the very stylish and creative decor of the restaurant and the hotel. The upstairs roof bar with snacks was fun but probably better for the younger crowd. This restaurant was my favorite among the four or five I visited while I was in San Francisco.
Pleasantly surprised by Villon. Portions were large to justify the high prices (although $14 for a side of roasted potatoes and $16 for brussels sprouts seems excessive). They had a very nice Riesling on the menu and the Hawaiian bread is yummy. I would come back here when in the area but the menu needs to be more comprehensive. They had one vegetarian option, 2 fish dishes, roasted chicken and American Wagyu steak. I am intrigued by the afternoon tea though and will definitely be back to try it. The service was okay, a little slow sometimes but we made it for our theater performance in plenty of time. This is a really good option in this area, especially for pre-theater dining.
Love it. Roberto recommended it for brunch. He’s great
Food and service were both amazing. This was a pre show dinner and it was a block from the Orpheum Theater so it was perfect. Only draw back was it was very noisy which made it hard to talk.
Highly recommend Villon! The food is delicious, perfectly portioned, and the menu size is just right. Jim our server was attentive, engaged, respectful, and made excellent suggestions.
We look forward to our next visit!
Great staff! Food excellent- kale salad was the only negative.
Service, setting and food were wonderful. Beautiful hotel and restaurant. Restaurant was very attentive to my celiac disease needs. That really stood out as a gluten free eater.
Fabulous setting and service! Loved every bite of my salmon and the Brussels sprouts were incredible.
Food was excellent! Hamachi crudo was best!
My son and I had a celebratory meal at Villon, and we were not disappointed! We splurged and shared a very nice bottle of prosecco; then we started with the Hawaiian bread, which was awesome; I ordered the Tonnarelli Pasta, which came with some delicious jumbo shrimp; my son ordered the King Salmon, which disappeared from his plate well before I finished my dinner! For dessert we shared the Coconut Panna Cotta, which tasted more raspberry than coconut--it was delicious! The dining room has an intimate feel; the ambiance is very pleasant. I highly recommend Villon!
Wonderful little restaurant! We were there before seeing Hamilton at the Orpheum and while we had left plenty of time others had left less so but the staff was very attentive and made sure to know who needed to get the show. The food was really really good and the service outstanding. Highly recommended!
