The food was excellent. And the location in the middle of town was great. Not much of an atmosphere... but we were sitting by the front window so not sure that it mattered. Definitely worth a visit.
Relaxing beautiful indoor setting and decorations, excellent food... everyone should try it!
Fantastic location, right in the middle of Carmel. Charming decor is enticing.
But the food falls short, particularly at the price. Well, the price isn't too surprising given the location, but I really wish that ceviche was really a true ceviche, instead of cooked octopus and shrimp in a sauce. Hand-made tortillas are ok.
We sat near the kitchen and immediately noticed the smell of old cooking oil. Service was great but there are just much better options for mexican food in the area.
My husband and I both enjoyed our meal, but it was very overpriced for what we ordered. Service wasn't outstanding. Would go elsewhere next time we're in Carmel.
Our dinner at Villa Sombreros was just average and probably fine for a quick meal. We were hoping for more since there are only a couple Mexican restaurants in town and they could kill it. We were all looking for an awesome margarita but unfortunately they don’t have a liquor license yet, just beer and wine. The service was great but we probably won’t be back since the food was uninspiring. Juan, our server, was very nice and professional.
This was our second visit to Villa Sombreros. This visit was our first for dinner. It was very noisy in the restaurant, I could not hear the waiter unless he spoke up. Maybe some fabric panels on the wall or ceiling would help. As people left it got better. We love the artwork on the walls and the decor! The woman hand making the tortillas so we can watch is a fun touch! The waiters go to her to plate them for their tables!
This chips are standard for a good Latin/Mexican restaurant. The salsa is very tasty 😋
It looked as if they were short-staffed that night. Our waiter did an excellent job for appearing to have the responsibility of every table in the restaurant. It looked as though there was only one other person to clear tables and fill drinks...plus a bartender. I had to ask for a glass of water 3 times. I think the rule in Carmel to have to ask for a glass of water before you can have any is short-sighted, especially in a walking environment like Carmel, and especially on warm days! Small glasses are acceptable!
The food was wonderful. It’s a little greasy - but the flavors are very tasty and the presentation is very nice. We had the “Hector’s Toothpicks” for an appetizer- there are 4 good sized flour tortillas - for us it was practically a meal for two. Very tasty! For our main meal we both had Chicken and Rajas Tostadas. Also very tasty but a bit on the greasy side. I think I would rather it taste more of fresh crunchy veggies than what I got.
Our first visit was for lunch. I had the Guadalajara Tacos which were delicious! I don’t remember what my husband had. That day was slower and the service was excellent, the wait staff was very friendly, and we loved the food.
We are locals here and we like Villa Sombreros very much. It is one of four Mexican-style restaurants in Carmel/Pacific Grove that we will return to for a casual night out to satisfy our craving for authentic and tasty Mexican/Latin American food!
I come from Houston so I am a bit of a Mexican food snob. Villa Sombreros was more authentic Mexican versus most the Tex-Mex we get here. Everything was extremely well executed. Portions were large and prices very reasonable. We got excellent service from the staff and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We will make sure to have return visit when we come back to Carmel. They do use a tequila blend with sake that made a margarita that my wife did not care for, so be forewarned.
Probably the second best Mexican food we've had outside of Mexico. The guacamole is hand made by mortar and pestle at your table. The tortilla are hand made fresh each day, salsa and sauces spiced In balance with only fresh ingredients.
The carnitas are served in an iron skillet with ample sides of cream fresh, salsa, more guacamole, whole beans and rice. You are leaving the Villa hungry.
The server was pleasant, a good server.
The decor fun and inviting. Make a reservation as for dinner it can get crowded, the place is rather small. The size makes it intimate and inviting.
Beer and wine only; but, I'm told the wine margaritas are pretty good. I prefer beer with my Mexican food.
Great casual place to grab a bite in Carmel. Guacamole is superior, service is personable and prompt. Only thing that would be better is to take their homemade tortillas and make the chips. A very enjoyable experience
Our waitress was charming. Service was fast and efficient. The food was delicious and plentiful.
Excellent food and service. Fajita meat was perfectly cooked and guacamole was outstanding. Good prices. Highly recommend.
Delicious food especially steak nachos enchiladas and relenos! Authentic and special flavors. can’t wait to return
Great atmosphere, friendly service, and delicious food!
No one in there but us then all the sudden some dude came in and was talking to us about the food but than critiqued our food options than walked to the back
We had the Halibut special & a shrimp quesadilla both were excellent. We also loved the margaritas. Thank you!
Server was awesome margaritas were awful bartender was creepy food was ok to much sauce bathroom was right next to my table the tables were close together
We are locals and excited to have a Mexican Reataurant in the Village. The best thing about our dining experience was our waitress who was working her tail off and served us well. Sadly the tacky decor and the uninspired food for our table of eight was really disappointing and entirely out of place in a Town with many exceptional dining options.
The food was just okay. Nothing special. Bland with not much flavor. Terrible margaritas! Restaurant is tiny with tables close together. Much better Mexican restaurants in the area.
Nice place with attentive staff. There on a quiet night. Excellent dinner with great flavors, not the usual American Mexican fare. Would definitely return.
Great food and service! Incredibly clean environment!
Great Mexican dinner and drinks. Very sweet service. Fabulous selection of food and drink - great choices of Jarritos sodas!
We loved Villa Sombrero! What a wonderful addition to Ocean Ave. The food was incredible and our server was super accommodating to our kids even with a full restaurant and him being only one of two servers. We will definitely be regulars here when we're in town!
Not pleasant inside. The waiter was aloof. The shrimp quesadilla was awful. Lunch prices were very high. $20.00 for one quesadilla and two soft drinks.
We enjoyed our first visit on a Saturday evening. Our table was ready at the reserved time. All the staff members we engaged were friendly and helpful. The menu offers a lot of choices. The menu items were slightly different than your typical Cal-Mex or Tex-Mex, I assume reflecting a regional cuisine from Mexico. Everyone in our party of four gave a thumbs up for their choice. The margaritas were very good too! one suggestion: the salsa that came with the corn chips and an additional with a smokey taste were very hot/spicy. Please offer a mild alternative. We’ll be back.
Walk into villa sombreros, on initial entry, all was well. Let’s get down to brass tacks, they don’t serve alcohol. How do you advertise margaritas when you don’t have tequila? Fast forward, I order guacamole and ceviche, you think you’d get ample chips to accommodate the various dips. Think wrong. Buying heroine in a back alley would have been easier than getting more chips. Nightmare situation. They couldn’t handle the patrons. There was a gringo women running around like a chicken with its head cut off clutching a notebook with barely legible writing who I assume was the manager. I’m sure she begged her partners to give her the down payment for that spot. A cat clawing in a bathtub probably has a better chance surviving than this chick. Save your time and go to Taco Bell.
The biggest problem here was the food was under flavored, somewhat bland.
Restaurant was very busy last Friday night when we were there. Food came quickly but we waited a long time for our check. The mango margarita was SO good.
I took a friend for Birthday lunch. Even tho we're both locals, it was a first at this restaurant. We were very pleasantly surprised. Food was excellent.
Visit Carmel 2-3 times a year and noted this new restaurant. Booked and so glad. Authentic, excellent staff, authentic food, reasonably priced. Our server was very helpful, admitted he was new; however, one would not have known. He was so accommodating, … even made a fresh pot of coffee, as that was my lunch beverage. My lunch companion commented on the good iced tea, not over strong and acidic, … very drinkable. Our entrees were outstanding and I look forward to coming back and trying more and more of the menu items.
Nothing better than original cultural ambiance in the restaurant to go with the food. Very authentic décor to go with authentic food. Tables were beautiful wood. Comfortable chairs, clean restroom.
All outstanding. Fresh made food items. Just outstanding overall. Did I mention outstanding?
We were very disappointed with the food, since the food didn't have much taste. Everything else was fine. The service was good.
When I was vacationing in Carmel, earlier this year, I saw the signs advertising the new Mexican restaurant opening soon. So on my return, I made my reservation and looked forward to trying a new dining spot. It was great, casual dining at its best. The service was attentive and the food was excellent. I had the salmon entree which was perfectly prepared. Everyone coming in the door was greeted by the manager. Such a welcoming atmosphere and within 10 minutes of being there, the place was packed. Definitely recommend this place.
We really enjoyed our meal. I had them make a Chicken Mole entree (they have it as an appetizer but they were happy to make it for an entree). It was delicious. Will definitely go back. They should add it to their menu.
Chips and salsa and guacamole were outstanding. The rest of the meal was very average. Margaritas were too sweet and service was ok.
A real Mexican restaurant with fabulous chile rellenos, home made tamales, enchiladas, etc. with lots of entree choices. Delicious! Waitress and bartender friendly with great personalities. Welcome to Carmel!!!
Best traditional Mexican food for 100 miles! We love everything we've eaten here, but favorite is the Carnitas. Also love the decor and location.
on our way to SoCAl we found this amazing restaurant on Open Table, and how lucky,
a very different menu, the two items we shared were excellent, Maracas and Toothpicks.
the chef is very inventive, and the food reflects it. The manager was very friendly and our server
was quite good.
The food was terrible, I am sure their Beef Colorado that they said was melt in your mouth, came from a can or frozen package. The salt content was so strong like a frozen dish not salt from cooking. The food was very bland and had no flavor what so ever. I would never go back and not recommend to anyone. I am sure it is the same owner who could not get the Artemis Restaurant going. Avoid this restaurant and Do Not Waste your Money. There are lots of wonderful restaurants in Carmel.
The restaurant didn’t have a liquor license yet and didn’t disclose that the alcohol was tequila infused sake. The margaritas were delicious but I’d skip if you like the flavor and kick of tequila.
Fantastic new restaurant on Ocean Avenue. We went there twice their first week and the food was delicious. Service was great and everyone was very friendly. Would highly recommend it!
