VIA VAI - Astoria
The restaurant is rustic cozy and charming, with a slate and marble top bar serving only select Italian wines, and local and imported tap and bottled beer, that pair perfectly with the artisanal food prepared every day on the premises, and the brick oven roman-style (thin crust) pizza cooked in the imported Italian oven.
Chef-owner Antonio Morichini is Roman born and bred. He did his culinary education and training in Italy, working in some of the best Michelin-starred restaurants in Rome. His food is loyal to tradition, but forward looking.

We went for Fathers Day. It was lovely sitting outside. The food was delicious and we liked the wine choices.
Love this place and have been coming here since 2016. Will always hold a special place in my heart- it’s where I got engaged💍🎉🥂🍾❣️
Food is delicious. It’s a tad expensive, portions are ok, not big nor teeny-tiny. Only thing that made made bit disappointed was they didn’t read the request. We were celebrating an anniversary but it was never acknowledged until I made a remark about it towards the end of dinner.
But what really bothered me was in that same request I mentioned that we did not want alcohol offered since we do not drink! Host brought over wine lost with menus... so clearly no one took the time to see it
First timer at Via Vai, and first time dining in Astoria. Didn’t know what to expect. We were lucky enough to have an outside covered table on a beautiful night. Even though we were technically seated in the street, the enclosure completely made us forget!
The wait staff was fantastic and the recommendations were excellent. Everything was delicious!
Had an amazing dinner a Via Vai last night !! It was my first fine dinning there and it will certainly not be my last. The decor and ambience was very European and help set the mood. The food was excellent and very much stood up to what the most recent press has been saying about it. I very much enjoyed the mussels, special gnocchi with octopus, and the wonderful pasta with jaw bone meat. The desserts were very good too! Tiramisu and the pistachio ice cream were both memorable dishes as well. Our server Samantha was just terrific !! I couldn’t tell by her accent what part of Italy she was from, but she sure did know all of the ingredients and preparation of the dishes. Not to mention helped guide us through the wine list which every glass we had was just wonderful. Thank you Samantha and Via Vai!
The food was delicious and the service was outstanding.
This is a place to go if you want really good food, a nice size portion. I highly recommend it.
Great food. Nice service. Nice ambience. I’d recommend it.
Excellent food. Felt like being in Rome.
We were excited to visit but our meal was
Food was truly incredible - down to the homemade bread and olive oil. Will definitely be back.
Food was delicious and service was even better. Wine list excellent and ambiance was amazing. Cannot wait to go back. Went with friends who live in the area who had never been and now also cannot wait to go back. Very varied menu items so much more I want to try.
Samantha the waitress was wonderful !
Food was great!
My review was based on sitting outside so that affected the ratings on noise level, service etc.
Love this place. Really transports you back to Italy the passes are beyond on point. The flavors take me right back to living in Italy again
Everything a great meal should be. Amazing food. Amazing service and great conversation.
We have a tradition of dating with husband once a month. So we have chosen this restaurant. And I really enjoyed everything: Chef’s dishes (amazing!), cozy atmosphere, service, vine! Natural food with clear taste! Extremely tasty, juicy and delicious food. Bravo to Chef and his staff! Was happy to meet the Chef and had a short talk!
Great Italian in a cozy neighbourhood spot, definitely worth the visit.
As always their staff can recommend amazing wines with great dishes. Their specials go quick but they are that good. I highly recommend this place for authentic Italian eating that doesn't give you stomach issues afterwards. The ingredients are always fresh and the flavors are matched excellently. The staff is also super.
Never had a bad meal at Via Vai. This time we had the pork tenderloin, spaghetti carbonara and kale salad - they were all excellent and fresh.
Ambiance is perfect, very cozy, lighting just right and always good background music.
Service was also up to par - waitress Sam suggested an excellent wine.
Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Very good restaurant, from appetizer to main course, we loved everything
Food was DELICIOUS! Wine was so good! Service was amazing.
Great food. Good drink. Friendly staff. Nice and quiet. Would definitely recommend.
Our meal and the service at VIA VAI was fantastic! Our temperatures were taken when we arrived and we were seated far from other dining parties. The salads were perfectly dressed and all of our entrees were delicious. Highly recommend the tiramisu for dessert, it was one of the best we've ever enjoyed. A new favorite of ours in the neighborhood!
Absolutely adorable! Food was perfect. Authentic Italian food hand made pasta was amazing
VIA VIA is a very good restaurant - it's the sort of delightful, delicious establishment that makes living in a city worthwhile!
Truly delicious food but service was a real problem. Our assigned server seemed to write us off upon arrival and, at times, it felt uncomfortably like a bias situation. There were only five tables (most of two and one of five) and two waitstaff. An hour and a half in we were told that there was a delay with our order but were largely ignored the rest of the time, though we did observe our server being attentive to their other tables. Several more things happened in that vein that we largely ignored because we were having a birthday dinner and didn't want any tension. However, after struggling to get a check and having to flag down another server, our original server shortchanged us by $75 and when confronted with the error, gave two different reasons, neither of which made sense. We got our correct change but it was a weird, sour end to what could have been a lovely evening.
The food is superb and the prices reflect that. But watch your tab and your server. The prices do not justify the overall dining experience. Food 10/10, Service 0/10.
Via Vai did a great job acclimating to the very challenging limits of the pandemic. I've always enjoyed the food and thoughtul wine list, and the service has actually improved. The waitress was attentive and personable and we were able to enjoy a delicious meal and paired wine in their outdoor dining area.
A real gem of an Italian restaurant in Astoria. The food is sensational!
Truly the finest authentic Italian cuisine in the 5 boroughs (and anywhere that I’ve been, outside of Italy. Worth the trip to Astoria!!!
Love love love
What a wonderful restaurant! We went there earlier this week to celebrate a family birthday. We all ordered pastas; each was outstanding. The service was superb, and our waitress brought out desert with a lit candle. (We didn’t even have to ask!) Love this place. Highly recommend!
Incredible service and impeccable food. I ordered the branzino special which was cooked inside focaccia - it was mind blowing. Our server was excellent - attentive and not pushy. Great place - will be back.
Matt and the chef Antonio were fantastic
It was great,
The wine selection is really good for the bottles and I was very happy with that and my food choices.
Great meal. Samantha was a wonderful hostess
Service is awful not sure how they got into Michelin’s rating system that should be re-evaluated
Unfortunately the service was terrible.
There was a new waitress, very nice and she was trying her best but still the service was terrible.
We had to request the menu, water wasn’t served or refilled as we wanted to.
There were people arguing with the manager and it wasn’t a o
The food is delicious. You have to be patient because it is still a newer restaurant. they were short staffed the evening we were there so one of the entrees came out much later than the remaining 2 and the appetizer came out with the meal. If you are enjoying your company and a nice beer or wine it isn’t so bad, but the food is absolutely worth the wait. Meatball appetizer is outstanding in flavor. Pasta with langoustine and crab is so yummy but it is not too saucy (drizzle a bit of the olive oil dip for bread, and that’s all you need). Definitely going back to taste every pasta on the menu! Wait staff was lovely even though they were overwhelmed due to staff and chef shortage that one evening. People dine at the bar as well. Highly recommend trying this restaurant but bring good friends and a happy attitude if you need to wait a bit.
