VIA VAI - Astoria
VIA VAI is a Chef-Owner run restaurant, serving contemporary and authentic Italian food that one would find in the best restaurants and trattorie in today's Italy.
The restaurant is rustic cozy and charming, with a slate and marble top bar serving only select Italian wines, and local and imported tap and bottled beer, that pair perfectly with the artisanal food prepared every day on the premises, and the brick oven roman-style (thin crust) pizza cooked in the imported Italian oven.
Chef-owner Antonio Morichini is Roman born and bred. He did his culinary education and training in Italy, working in some of the best Michelin-starred restaurants in Rome. His food is loyal to tradition, but forward looking.
Incredible service and impeccable food. I ordered the branzino special which was cooked inside focaccia - it was mind blowing. Our server was excellent - attentive and not pushy. Great place - will be back.
Matt and the chef Antonio were fantastic
It was great,
The wine selection is really good for the bottles and I was very happy with that and my food choices.
Great meal. Samantha was a wonderful hostess
Service is awful not sure how they got into Michelin’s rating system that should be re-evaluated
Unfortunately the service was terrible.
There was a new waitress, very nice and she was trying her best but still the service was terrible.
We had to request the menu, water wasn’t served or refilled as we wanted to.
There were people arguing with the manager and it wasn’t a o
The food is delicious. You have to be patient because it is still a newer restaurant. they were short staffed the evening we were there so one of the entrees came out much later than the remaining 2 and the appetizer came out with the meal. If you are enjoying your company and a nice beer or wine it isn’t so bad, but the food is absolutely worth the wait. Meatball appetizer is outstanding in flavor. Pasta with langoustine and crab is so yummy but it is not too saucy (drizzle a bit of the olive oil dip for bread, and that’s all you need). Definitely going back to taste every pasta on the menu! Wait staff was lovely even though they were overwhelmed due to staff and chef shortage that one evening. People dine at the bar as well. Highly recommend trying this restaurant but bring good friends and a happy attitude if you need to wait a bit.
Service was horrible
We love everything about Via Vai-the food, the welcoming atmosphere, the wine selection. We go for special occasions or just for a lovely dinner. The pasta is fresh and the serving size is perfect.
Amazing restaurant! Fell in love with the meatballs and the service was outstanding.
On a busy Valentine’s Day the food was very good
I am looking forward to trying it again on a regular night. The food was very good.
Went on Valentine’s Day it was very crowded and they clearly squeezed in extra tables they probable use as outdoor seating. The table was small and like a tv table where you couldn’t put your legs under it because of a bar connecting the table legs. The chairs were also very uncomfortable. I heard the people at the next table complaining about them too. They had a special limited menu for Valentine’s Day but didn’t tell us they were out of gnocchi until we tried to order it. The service was very slow and at one point we were waiting for 5 minutes for cheese. The food itself was good. The experience overall was terrible.
Everything from the service to the food was excellent. The menu was creative and relatively affordable.
Terrible service. Food was OK but took entirely too long to come out. The staff didn’t check in or say anything about why the food was taking so long (almost an hour wait for our entrees). Never again.
The server, Samantha, was terrific -- friendly, helpful and great with recommendations.
We had a very lovely meal and the atmosphere was super cozy and welcoming. The only "issue" we had was we made a reservation for 7:45pm and when we checked in we were told we had to be out by 9pm due to a large party. We ended up rushing to leave, which wasn't fun.
The food was amazing!! It took a pretty long time but was worth the wait
The food was excellent, great atmosphere and the service was very good.
Perfect Italian restaurant. Food, service everything perfect..
Me and my husband we really had a great a time.
Everything was outstanding from the food we had fois gras for apps that was fantastic then duck and branzino and main both perfect executed and very tasty service was very italian and welcoming and the wine was fantastic . See you soon via vai thank you
Branzino was delicious. Great variety on wines. We got a complementary Panna cotta desert that was yummy
Amazing food and very attentive service. Went on a Friday night to celebrate a birthday.
Food was excellent.
I came in here Saturday night with seven of my girlfriends. The food was very good. The service was alright. It seemed like we inconvenience them being there. A little disappointed because we all come from a background in the restaurant business. Location is good, and ambience was good as well.
We went to Via Vai for Thanksgiving dinner. Every item of food was absolutely delicious. I had the meat and cheese platter - outstanding. My wife had the caprese mozz. and prosciutto - also outstanding. My daughter had the calamari - very tender and cooked well. For dinner, my wife had the carrot gnocchi which were delicious and unique, while my daughter had the shrimp ravioli which she enjoyed very much. The portions were large enough to fill us up. The only issue we had was that it pricey, as we spent $270 for our meal.
Food OK. Overpriced for what you actually get
The food, as usual, was delicious. The only slight issue was that we were kind of squeezed as we were three people on two tables and that made it a bit uncomfortable. Otherwise, the warmth and friendliness of the Chef/Owner, Antonio, and the staff was wonderful.
Truly authentic Italian. Delicious. Great wine list to.
Appetizers, main course, desert and drinks were amazing. And for children my son loved the personal pizza so much we had to order two.
Very delicious meal. I ordered the cacio e pepe, which was as good as any I've had in Rome.
It was understaffed tonight. Our waiter stopped in the middle of taking our order to seat 2 parties that walked in. It took an hour and 10 min after taking our order for our entrees to come out. And then to add insult to injury we were charged 20% gratuity for a party of 5.
Good food. Good service. The portions could be a bit larger.
Amazing. Food. Amazing. Chef. Antonio. Amazing waiters. Manuel Daniel.
The food at this restaurant was very creative and well done. Menu is a little limited ,but everything we ate was superior to most Italian restaurants. I did feel the glasses of wine were unexpectedly pricey for an Astoria restaurant. However, food good enough to return and recommend to friends.
Look no further, this is the Italian restaurant you have always wanted without the $1,000 tab for a visit to Italy! Flavors you thought you'd never find again are suddenly there in front of you. Pasta's better than your grandmother's and not the ersatz Italian food you find all over NY, but real Italian food. Enjoy it as long as you can because before you know your plate will be empty, and you'll be promising to go back soon.
Have eaten twice here and both meals were excellent. The pastas are exceptional.
Every dish...the mozzarella with prosciutto, the pasta dishes, the bread, the wine were all part of a perfect eating experience.
Food was outstanding and seemed very authentic. Service was friendly and helpful. Each dishwe tried was memorable. What else can I say!
Good food with very helpful staff. The decor and ambiance are also great. In terms of great Italian food in the neighborhood, this place is definitely on the list.
Delicious, authentic food, amazing wine list, and great service!
