My appy was terrible, tough as shoe leather, smoked pork belly like smoked boot.
Other food was very good over all. Over priced for sure. Scallop special, well cooked and presented but 4 scallops for $40 a bit much. Short ribs very tender and flavorful.
We went for Valentine's Day. Given it was a holiday, we made a reservation. We got there 10 minutes early and they were able to seat us immediately. It was different compared to most restaurants in the area, so we enjoyed that. Plus, it's in the middle of Somerville, a very nice town. Definitely plan on going back in the future.
Verve took advantage of customers for Valentine's with a prix fixe dinner they did not tell my wife about when she reserved a table. (She did not check the website because she reserved just based on reputation and our prior experience.) $75/pp was way over the top. But they did take the trouble to call to reconfirm our reservation the day before, to protect their own interest. Verve is an excellent restaurant and we've been several times. Food is excellent as is the service. Drinks are among the best and feature home-made bitters. Ambience is very nice. But the prix fixe was over the top for a 3-course meal. If you figure $15 for the appetizer, $10 for the dessert, that leaves $50 for the main -- WAY over the top. The salmon was excellent and served piping hot, as was the parsnip soup. The chocolate desert was good. Other main courses were pasta, filet mignon, oso bucco. Nothing worth $50. Because service is always excellent, our tip would have been 20%. But on top of the $75 fixed price, a 20% tip was automatically added to our tab for 2. That was inappropriate. As a frame of reference, compare to Brian's in Lambertville, arguably one of the best restaurants in NJ: Brian's normal prix fixe is $45 during the week, $50 on the weekend. Reasonable for an outstanding restaurant, and the BYO softens the blow. Brian's Valentine's dinner was $70 prix fixe - for 4 courses. The $75 at Verve just did not add up -- over $220 for 2 for 3 courses might be justified at a place like Rats in Hamilton, but at Verve it was a rip-off. Please don't take gross advantage of your customers again just because it's Valentine's.
Verve is a high end restaurant with outstanding food, great service and ambiance.
Horrible service at the bar. It was also too crowded and we kept getting bumped into (we were sitting on the high tops in the bar). The drinks were awful too. The place looked a little dirty. Food was great and our waiter was good. Also I called to ask about vegetarian options and was told there are plenty of options and that the chef could accommodate me. There was only ONE option. No accommodations.
It was our first time at Verve. We were ushered downstairs where we ate in quiet ambience. I had a cocktail called The PCT which the main ingredient was rye pistacchio. It was outstanding. I had a second. Crab cakes were fabulous and so were the short ribs. Raspberry Sorbet was the finishing touch. It was like two restaurants . Downstairs was quiet and wonderfully romantic and upstairs was lively and more vociferous. Overall it was a home run and a definite revisit.
Too noisy for my liking. They got the salad orders wrong. The menu never really changes. Value is not that good. My wife and I had been there a few times before, but I don't think we'll be going back.
The food was absolutely delicious and the portions were just right.
The cocktails were out of this world.
The service was warm and friendly.
Everything about our dining experience was excellent.
The only negative comment would be about parking, or the lack thereof.
Good food, good ambience, good service
We had a large group booked for a wine pairing dinner on Saturday night. There was a miscommunication that we had booked a wine pairing and they did not have it on their book. Despite that and being very busy, they told us it would not be a problem and were able to make it happen. Very nice!! The food and wines were very good.
The cocktails were ok and the the food was ok- I was not blown away by the restaurant.
It was a great vibe in this spot and the food was spot on with a French theme. It was a date night with my wife and I got a winning smile from my lady so this place is "aces" in my book.
Verve is always reliable. Friendly staff and management. Great food. No place I would rather be on New Year's Eve or any other time.
My wife and I visited Verve twice in the last week or so. We enjoyed our meals very much on each occasion. We sat in the bar area the first time which was lively and fun. We tried the dining room on our second visit and the food and service were excellent. We will be back again very soon.
Great creative drinks. Intimate feel in the dining area.
As always, Verve delivered! Time and time again, its offerings are outstanding and service excellent. We had a special occasion dinner for and with friends there recently and everyone was quite happy. I'd be hard pressed to recommend anything off the menu, because everything is just so good. It's a busy restaurant, so make reservations before you go.
Great menu especially the bar small plates. A perfect spot for a dinner date or night out with great friends. Exceptional bar staff and great food make this one of our go to spots in the area.
Dining room is very narrow and tables very close together. Waiter seemed a bit confused. Food was good but prices were NYC prices and not commensurate with the food.
Bar are was small and crowded and loud.
I don't think I will be going back there again.
Especially with all the great restaurants in the area.
Service Excellent and atmosphere awesome would love to have many more special occasions. Thank you
We had a friend's birthday here, the food and service was excellent, the drinks were great too.
We always enjoy the evening here!
Food was truly very good but excessive noise detracted from the dinner. Very active bar scene right next to dining but also very load table of screaming diners. Might go back mid week but not on a weekend
Our picky friends enjoyed their choices. Hooray!
My husband loved the pork loin and I will order the Scottish salmon again and again.
We had a problem with the desserts.
My friend found the cheesecake sour to taste.
My other friend was disappointed with the cheese board.
The only memorable taste was the creamy Gouda.
We all enjoyed our drinks.
See you againsoon.
Always a great experience!
Always worth the drive to Somerville. Narrow, a bit noisy, but the food and service are wonderful. Waiter helpful and friendly, drinks (Dewar's) substantial, food interesting and delicious. Have not tried desserts yet.
Birthday and get together with friend from out of state. Fabulous, style edged, inventive cocktails from the bar! Never disappoints! Amazing, colorful, flavor packed plates. Seasonal taste explosions in the short ribs. Will make any excuse to come again.
My husband and I love to cook, so we don't go out often. We went to Verve for our 5th wedding anniversary. Based on reviews I had read, I expected more from the food. While my short rib was tasty, both my husband's and my soup was luke warm at best. His duck was also well overdone. Perhaps this was because they were getting ready for a Halloween party, but it was unfortunately a disappointing meal. I normally trust in the reviews of others to offer new dining opportunities that make a hit; however, this time it was a miss for me.
The food is fabulous here different items on the menu. The chef does amazing things with simple raviolis for instance. Went there had a bunch of appetizers with friends to sample different kinds of foods. I highly recommend to do this if you haven't eaten here before. Service was fabulous all the workers are friendly and great at their jobs
From the viewpoint of outstanding drinks, food, service & ambience, Verve has been & continues to be a winner. Proprietor Rick St Pierre has given Somerville (and Central Jersey) a great dining/drinking & social gathering establishment. Rather than concentrating on volume, Verve emphasizes quality, and for that we are grateful.
