Verses Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
After many years of good food and service, this year's edition Happening Gourmand was quite the letdown.
The staff was not very knowledgeable of their menu, we asked questions of which either they had no answers to, or answered something vague. Somewhat of a minor irritant, but hey, nobody knows everything right?
What really made the night an unremarkable was one of the main dishes, which was a rilette style pheasant dish, actually had many bones in it. We had advised the waiter on multiple occasions about the problem and had ask him to report it to the chef in the kitchen. He did not do any of the such, so we had to eat the food CSI style, as if we were trying to look for evidence, trying not to get stabbed by the crushed bones in the food. After carefully and painstakingly removing no less than 5 bones (1/4 toothpick sized), we presented the evidence to the waiter which shrugged it off, said "It happens" and threw away everything without showing it to the chef. It's not like if they were busy also, everyone was watching the Superbowl, so there were a grand total of 4 tables seated in the restaurant. At no occasion, he asked if we wanted anything else or if there was anything he could do.
When this kind of stuff happens, I don't usually go out of my way to ask for free things or anything of the such, so we paid the bill and left.
Even though 5/6 of their plates were delicious, we left the restaurant with a sour taste in our mouth.
We had heard from the staff that Verses was changing its mission from being a high end restaurant to more of a bistro kind of place, but didn't expect such a huge letdown.
This evening might have put an X on making Verses a must go for us during the next Happening Gourmands. Hopefully they can turn it around.
It was a nice experience so I would recommend the restaurant and the brunch was good. I was nonetheless disappointed as we were over-charged. I believe it was unintentional and it was corrected although not fully and it took some time... We ordered 3 normal Mimosa drinks at $10 each. The bill was more expensive than I thought but I went ahead and paid as I thought I simply hadn't evaluated properly since there were 4 of us. After paying, I just kept thinking that it shouldn't have been that high and checked the bill in detail and discovered we had been charged $23 for each Mimosa. We had specifically discussed with the waitress when ordering that we did not want their premium Mimosas. In any case, they immediately recognized the error and attempted to correct it. It took several minutes for them to figure out how to make the correction at which pointed they handed me $39 in cash. I knew right away that this was not the right amount as I had paid tax and tip on the original bill but was frustrated by the time and the inability to figure out the correct refund amount so just took the $39... Considering the tax and the tip, I should have been refunded $47.60 so still ended up paying extra. I don't think this is reflective of the overall restaurant and believe the people who tried to help just weren't familiar with the register but this still left a negative impression.
We went during Happening Gourmand. The food was good, but not great. My main course of braised veal needed salt badly. The appetizer was chicken veloute with smoked duck and was delicious. I paid $4 extra for the chocolate dessert. It was ok, a bit too tart.
Having been there a couple of times before, I was a little disapointed this time by the food. Usually is great and this time it was a little bit bland and nothing out of the ordinary. I love the place and it’s sad that the quality of the food choices I took was not up to the level I was used to see there.
Spent 2 weeks dining in Montreal and had the fortune of ending this culinary marathon at this gem of a restaurant. The experience was tremendous . From the stellar plating of their luscious cuisine to the attentive and personable service, you would do yourself an injustice by NOT visiting "Verses". Local ingredients are showcased with glorious flavour combinations and creative alluring presentation. I Highly recommend you treat yourself. "Verses" exemplifies why food is more than fuel but rather, a pleasure to be savoured. Montreal shows it's pride, heritage and lust for life through its food and "Verses" shines bright! Bon Appetit.
Verses advertised a New Year's Eve menu but they were not prepared to celebrate the event. The staff was clearly overwhelmed and undertrained. There were no "favors" to celebrate, no announcement of New Year, etc. All food arrived at table at a colder temperature than acceptable. Several plates were delivered to our table that we did not order, even though we were on a fixed $95 menu. We may return for lunch sometime in the future but they nearly ruined New Year's Eve for us. Sad!
I told the reservation person we were coming for brunch, and made a 9:00 am, Christmas morning reservation. They did not inform me that the brunch menue was available only from 11:00 a.m.! So, we were only able to have breakfast inside their bar area, not the restaurant itself.
That said, the food was great-tasting, the eggs benedict properly prepared, and tasty espresso drinks.
Soir de Noël en famille dans un cadre très chaleureux. Accueil très courtois et professionnel. Table prête dés notre arrivée. Service attentionné et irréprochable. Menu unique avec choix pour Noël, un gage de qualité. Carte des vins diversifiées. Merci pour cette soirée.
One of the few spots in old port that actually has decent food these days. Expect it to be on the pricy side for what you get but it is still a nice spot for a more upscale meal (business dinners are a great ocassion). The night we were there, I think there was an event happening that occupied the server's attention and so we didn't receive as great of service as I would have imagined. The food was excellent quality and prepared very well. Love the local focus a lot.
