Great food for a fun evening in Calistoga. The grilled shrimp with polenta was delicious and highly recommended. My companions had the equally delightful hoisen pork ribs, salmon and a lovely dish of mussels and clams. The waitstaff was exceptional as well. Over-all, a wonderful dinner for a small group of friends to share good food in a great atmosphere.
We had a great meal and super service. It’s a shame the place had so few diners. Loads of people cancelled but there was no risk of the fires hitting the town now.
Verasion is our go-to restaurant in Calistoga. The service and food are always top notch. Hi
We had made reservations for our anniversary. We had the oysters, the crude and the mussels - everything was excellent. The sauce on the mussels was a little different than most I have had and it was spectacular. We will definitely be eating at Veraison next time we are in Calistoga.
Food was disappointing
Salmon and scallops undercooked- has to have salmon sent back to kitchen as it was fairly raw
Overall, we enjoyed our meal, but be warned. The food on offer is VERY uneven in portion size and preparation. Clarify with your server what size portion you will be getting dish by dish! Some things were badly over cooked. We started out with a three item charcuterie plate which was presented very nicely with excellent cheeses and accoutrements. We chose the house made pate for our third item, which was okay, but in my opinion, was too lean and crumbly to pass for a really good representation of pate. Next, we shared a grilled artichoke that was unpleasantly burnt...not nicely charred...burnt. There was no sweetness or fleshyness left at all. Yuck. Our main courses were salmon and the scallops. Both dishes were main entre items. The salmon was presented with two smashed potatoes and grilled asparagus, and was portioned as a main course should be. The salmon was cooked to perfection, but the asparagus was mush on one side and black on the other. Their grill chef needs practice!! My husband's scallop dish was a total disappointment. The scallops themselves were delicious and perfectly cooked BUT the presentation was abismal. They were served on a small oblong plate about 7" x 2-1/2". They sat on a smear...not a bed...a smear...of polenta. There was a tiny dollop of deliciously sauted mushrooms, but probably no more than a tablespoon, maybe two. There was supposed to have been a berry drizzle (French term here), but that had been forgotten. Honestly, this looked like an appetizer, not anything even close to a main dish. BTW, our server specifically said that the items from the section listing the scallops were all main courses. If we had not had the charcuterie beforehand, our "fine dining" experience would have been ruined, as this expensive dish absolutely did not constitute a "meal". Dessert was okay. My husband had a cheesecake dish which was small but excellent. I had house made blackberry sorbet. It seemed bitter and lacking in flavor. Very so-so.
The owner was our server and he was amazing!!! The food was impeccable and the overall experience was delightful!!! I highly recommend this place❤️❤️❤️
Our first visit. Warm and slightly wilted lettuces in what was supposed to be a cold salad for 1st course that took 45 minutes to arrive. Ordered house made fettuccine with lamb sugo and mushy angel hair with bland red sauce that included a few bits of lamb arrived instead, with no explanation. Quite disappointed in what we had hoped would be a new go-to option.
Excellent food that was well prepared. The service was a little slow at the beginning and then was attentive. My husband got the three courses with dessert and I got two courses and it was enough for us. Food is excellent.
I was so disappointed by this restaurant. My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary and first overnight out since our 9 month old daughter was born. I requested a nice table in advance. We arrived at were sat in a weird platform section that was super bright and noisy and not the least bit romantic...
I was excited that they offered a build your own coursed food and wine pairing and chose to do 3 courses. My husband, a vegetarian, chose 3 meatless options off the menu to go along with my courses. Out of 6 dishes, only 2 were good. His cheese plate, and my salmon. His main dish was touted as a farro stuffed Chile relleno but we could find almost no farro in it and it was severely under seasoned. After my salmon came the lamb ragu. Again under seasoned with overdone pasta but the real issue I had was lamb. The pieces were either tough and stringy or just fat covered gristle. And then there was the piece of bone I found that I could’ve easily broken a tooth on had I just bit into it. Because who expects a friggin bone in a pasta ragu?!?
Shamefully that wasn’t the worst of the dishes. I also ordered the duck breast and leg confit. The breast was so over cooked it looked like jerky. As soon as it arrived to my table I asked the server how the duck is supposed to be prepared because it’s usually standard for duck breast not to be cooked past medium. She told me it comes how the chef cooks it. Well duh. She wound up taking it back to be re-cooked. It came out looking like it was cooked right but it wasn’t. The chef obviously had no idea how to cook duck. The fat wasn’t rendered properly and the skin was chewy not crispy. The leg upon further inspection was even drier and jerky like than the 1st breast that was sent out. I couldn’t eat it.
We asked for the check and our server, clearly recognizing we weren’t happy, offered us dessert on the house. And that (flourless chocolate cake) was actually good. Not enough to make up for the otherwise bad experience.
Our meal was overpriced and underwhelming. We received one meal that was under “large plates” and consisted of only 3 scallops for greater than $30. Only one server for the entire restaurant.
Good was good timeliness and attitude of server was poor. Good was good but they need to make some changes before we would return.
The food was delicious and the service efficient and friendly. The lamb ragout on pasta was great.
Excellent staff, and wonderful food. Cocktails were just ok, but overall we had a fantastic night
Great food. Great wine. Wine a bit over-priced, wine list broad but not deep. Service was terrible. We felt abandonned... had to beg to get dessert and our check. We never knew which person was our server. At one point we felt we could have just gotten up and walked out and would have never been noticed.
The service was awesome - the food superb.
I would pass on this restaurant. It was my wife’s birthday. Made reservation 10 days in advance and got the poorest table, poorest service and Burnt chicken and bitter drinks. Never given the opportunity to explain and correct this. Very overpriced for what is on the menu. Totally disinterested waiter.
Good food, good portion even for tasting menu, got really full. Service was good even gave as a glass of bubbly wine for our anniversary on the house which was a nice touch.
Not happy with this place.
Attentive service, good food from somewhat limited menu, perhaps not executed at the highest level
Meh...overpriced, mediocre food - service from the initial server was indifferent and listless - 2nd and 3rd servers were friendly and helpful - food, given where it is, is not worth the price tag - just nothing to write home about and we walked away scratching our heads over how overpriced this was for such a boring, average experience.
Terrible service. Extremely small portions for price. Mediocre food at best. Would not recommend.
We chose the restaurant based on reviews and location. The main problem was the waiter. He had too many tables to wait on and was not very attentive. Asked him for bread several times until he actually brought it. Then we had no knives to spread the butter. The birthday dessert took almost 30 minutes to get ( seems he forgot). There just wasn’t a warm, welcoming vibe from the waiter which is expected at a nice restaurant.
The food was good with nice sized portions and the value was good as well.
Excellent service, delicious food and outstanding wine selection
Good food for high price. Pleasant locale.
Dinner was delish. We split the “pick four” and it allowed us to try everything we wanted.
Wonderful food, great service, excellent wine list.
My wife and I split the 7 course w/ wine pairing and it was incredible. Everything was delicious and our server, Elizabeth, made our night special. We are so thankful we discovered this place!
We sat at the Bar. The bar tender was fantastic. Made great cocktails. The kitchen made great food, but was just slow.
Sorry but the food was so disappointing. Been here before and it was good this time, so sad this was our Saturday dinner plans. Left and went and had a 2nd dinner.
perfectly prepared modern french food great wine list
We had a lovely time! Beautiful space, great service.
We felt rushed to vacate our table
Our meal wasn't bad, it just wasn't' great. I was disappointed by the table given that we'd made a reservation and noted that it was a special occasion. Our server was friendly and knowledgable. Half way through the meal we felt as if he was rushing us, but finally took our lead and allowed us to have a relaxing dinner. The grilled artichoke was very tasty. I would recommend providing diners with wipes of some kind as it was very messy. My husband had the scallops which he enjoyed, but said was a bit sweet. I had the calamari steak. I was worried about it being tough, but it was very tender. Nothing on the desert menu appealed to us, so we skipped dessert. Overall, it was an ok meal, but we were not impressed enough to go again.
We ate at Lovina the night before and would go there again.
A most pleasant experience with good food and very informative conversation with the Manager about the wine industry and the district. I shall always recommend this venue to other overseas visitors.
Thank you for making my 40th birthday relaxed and special!
Some of the plates were great, like the avocado toast but some were poor like the tiny kale salad that seemed nothing like the menu description. The short run pasta was a hit but the 3 oz. portion of Kimchi halibut for $28.00 was sadly lacking. The worst part of our meal was the wait. I don't know if it was our waiter or the kitchen but we waited 20 minutes for our apps and then waited almost 35 minutes for our mains. Hope this isn't the norm for them.
Had repeatedly to get the attention of servers... everything from refilling water glasses, placing food orders, asking to see dessert menu.
Open doors on evening after a hot day let in tons of flies... and gave us no ventilation.
Served 2/12 oysters that were rancid ... and didn’t comp anything.
Sorbets were weak and icy ... not fruity.
Main courses and salads were all good, our table had fish, beef, mussels, chicken. Everyone was happy with the preparation s.
Nice that they charged no corkage fees for our two bottles.
Maybe it was just a bad day at the restaurant... When we arrived at for our reservation the first thing we noticed was the number of tables not cleared from previous diners, always a bad sign for a restaurant that was, at that point, not that busy. The second thing we noticed that it was very warm in the restaurant; when I mentioned it to the person who seated us she said that she too felt it was too warm but didn't do anything about it.
We started with the cheese and charcuterie and that was very good, really good. My spouse order a dish that came with "creamy polenta" for his main but it turned out that the polenta was actually (evidently) grits (yes, there is a difference). I ordered the homemade fettuccine with short rib ragu. The ragu wasn't bad but the fettuccine was so overcooked that it almost fell apart on the fork.
Service was sporadic at best.
For this price point I don't expect to have the server, when they clear our appetizer plates, to take our dirty silverware off our appetizers plates and then set them back on the bare table for us to use with our main course; frankly it's just gross.
As I said, maybe we were just there on a bad day.
