The restaurant can use warmer, ambient light.. feels gloomy. The host is very friendly and inviting. The service is ok.. had to constantly look for a disappearing waiter when we needed something . There was no pepper offered, not in a fresh form from a waiter and neither on a table, which is strange.
The tiny bread was brought over toasted, looked like it was a big slice cut into tiny four pieces.. just pathetic.
The salad with beets , goat cheese and arugula that I ordered was “ swimming” in oil, which was pretty gross.
The kale and corn soup had more kale than corn- all green and no corn in sight!! Eww..
My husband liked his steak and my son liked pork chops. Oh and the wine selection is poor- they didn’t have Merlot.
All in all, overpriced and mediocre.
Vela never disappoints. Apps, salads and entrees all meet a high standard.
Excellent meal and service.
Appetizer portions very skimpy for the price. Drinks not up to par, barely tasted liquor. It Was Valentine's Day so chalking it off to that. Generally speaking, one of my favorite restaurants.
The food was tasty and served smoothly by an experienced and attentive, personable staff.
Decent food but overpriced. We wanted to share a soup starter in 2 bowls and they would not do it. Parking here is also difficult. There are better choices in westchester.
Consistently great on all levels...
The service was prompt and attentive without being overbearing. This contributed to the success of the meal. The food, appetizers, mains and a dessert, were all well prepared and attractively presented. Overall, a great restaurant experience for couples.
Food and service consistently good. Great menu and everyone enjoyed what they ordered.
As usual, our meal was quite good but the service was lacking. They try but they are not holding up to the food they serve or prices they charge.
For years, e have LOVED the companion restaurant, Vintage 1891 Kitchen in Larchmont. This was out first time at Vela. The standout was the food -- every bit as good as 1891! We had the foie gras with mixed berry sauce and the lump crab appetizers - both exquisite. Our mains were the sesame crusted tuna and the salmon. Both were outstanding. The salmon was more medium than medium-rare as we ordered, but still moist and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. We also ordered mixed drinks. My wife had a standard Manhattan, which was perfectly balanced. I ordered one of their house cocktails, Sidecar Named Desire, by description, Bulleit bourbon with peach liqueur and lemon. Unfortunately, it tasted mostly of intense, muddy lemon and was totally undrinkable. Our server was gracious and replaced it with a Manhattan at no additional charge. He was very good overall and enhanced the meal with his suggestions. We had the impression that the timing of the wait staff was a bit off--we often found ourselves looking for our server, or anyone, and it took longer than it should have to flag someone down. The ambiance is okay, but not as fun, light or quirky as 1891 Kitchen. The bar area, in a separate room is actually well lit and gives a warm. welcoming feeling. We might stop by here just for a drink. The dining room is more somber, with medium gray walls and dark wood. That would be okay if there were something in contrast, but the art on the walls is all large black and white photos of street scenes. Utterly forgettable, and the lack of color contributes to the somber mood of the room. A couple of small, shaded sconces on the wall do not enhance the room either, though the more modern and bright fixture in the ceiling is very nice. If they would make a few changes to lighten the atmosphere, improve the house drinks and also take the coordination of the service up a notch, this would be an enthusiastic "5!"
The atmosphere at Vela was friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed the literature-themed cocktails, and both went for the “Tequila Mockingbird”-sweet and delicious. The goat cheese and beet appetizer offered an incredibly generous portion of goat cheese, and the accompany beets, walnuts and greens made a beautiful accompaniment. My dining companion went for the cauliflower fritters, perhaps a less-calorie heavy option in the end, which was warm, crispy and flavorful—both were excellent options. She went for a crispy stack of branzino which she was thrilled with, and I chose the organic chicken breast with sautéed spinach and rice. The chef accommodated me on creating a non-dairy sauce for the dish. My only discomfort at all was that the restaurant was distractingly chilly throughout the meal.
We went to the restaurant after a movie at Jacob Burns theater, very convenient. This was our second visit, and it didn't disappoint. Except that I find the service a bit weird. They seated us right away and a waiter poured water, then disappeared--for about 10 minutes, while we looked at the menu and talked. Then, he came over to take our drink orders. The restaurant wasn't busy, so I don't know why he didn't take our drink orders right away. Anyway, the food is good and we will return.
Perfectly crisp Branzino served by attentive and friendly staff. Made for a warm and cozy night. MC, Briarcliff Manor, NY
Food and service is always excellent. The manager is always delightful, accommodating and always finds a way to seat you even without a reservation. I really enjoy this place. Reasonably priced for the quality of food and service.
The food was quite good- good value, good preparation, good taste
Service also was quite good- slightly slow so as not to be perfect but overall solid
Good value overall- not too expensive
Second time eating there-this will be a go - to for us
Everything was delicious. The service was great. We had a wonderful time.
Went with friends; appetizers & drinks were amazing and service was very attentive. Must try the cauliflower fritters!
The noise level became uncomfortably loud. When I have to shout at my dinner mate, it means: Don't come back here.
Great as usual....
We had a lovely meal
Ben is a pleasant and most knowledgeable wine expert who always adds to our dining experience...a excellent stop before or after the Burns theater
Love the food and everyone is friendly!
My friend and I, celebrating our respective birthdays, conveniently strolled across the street after seeing a movie at the Burns. The staff was warm and friendly, the environment cozy and comfortable, and the menu quite varied. I enjoyed my duck dinner and my friend enjoyed her salmon dinner.Although the restaurant gradually became noisier as the night wore on, we were able to casually linger -no feeling of being rushed out for the next party.Definitely would return again.
Great food, excellent service, nice atmosphere.
Nice spot for a meal before movie.
First time dining at this restaurant.
This was our 1st time dining at Vela Kitchen. (live in Rockland County.) It did NOT disappoint. The food was outstanding & the service, excellent. Would definitely recommend & return. The menu was fabulous. Had a difficult time deciding what to order! Only complaint...noise level was very energetic.
The noise level was upsetting. The menu was different from what is on line: e.g. no potatoes au gratin substituted by a very ordinary corn hash. The staff was wonderful.
Great meal and friendly staff! Every time I go I am pleased with the whole experience! The food is fabulous and the menu has so many options. Great night out!
We are finicky diners who are thrilled with this neighborhood gem. Delicious fresh food.
Many choices all perfectly prepared and beautifully plated.
Michael is wonderful and we seem to see Chris our waitperson often. He's fabulous. The ambiance is lovely and the food is delicious. Perfect for pre or post Jacob Burns and it is a favorite of ours.
outstanding choice for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week, starting with fantastic Truffle Mac the pork chop was amazing, as was my wife's salmon. And the bread pudding was perfect.
The food is excellent and the service was great
A great place for a special catch up dinner with old friends. Service was very attentive and food was delicious.
Great dining experience. I would recommend to anyone. The owners and staff are excellent. The food exquisite.
Tuna tartare was excellent
Bronzino was good but nothing special good service and very comfortable place we had a 5:30 reservation and although the dining room was busy by the time we were finished we were never hurried or made to feel uncomfortable
Will definitely go again
The place was hopping on a Sunday night. Sat at the bar and had great service and attention from Katy and Joanne. Always a pleasure and always a great meal. Osso Buco special was delicious.
Vela kitchen has a great menu and great ambiance. Perfect place to meet friends -
Vela’s Kitchen is consistently good! We enjoyed a fantastic dinner and were never rushed out!
Vela Kitchen is one of my favorite restaurants in Westchester. It has fantastic food -- fresh, flavorful, generous portions. Every dish I've had there has been great. The tuna tartare appetizer is amazing, as is their fish and pasta dishes. It also has great atmosphere, and lovely servers. Perfect for pre-movie appetizers and drinks or a date night.
