The food was inventive and interesting at Vegetable Butcher. Curious name as the restaurant is vegetable “forward” but by no means vegetarian as there are many meat additions that can be added to you meal.
The kitchen used the deep fryer very liberally, so if your not a huge fan of deep fried foods, ask before you order. We split a plate of some fingerling potatoes with shushito peppers, that I was unaware would meet the fryer, and I really didn’t enjoy that dish too much being deep fried adverse.
All in all we would recommend this place, but there was one service element of which they should pay more attention. When we arrived, it wasn’t very busy, and the service was prompt. However, we ordered way to much food, as the prices reflected portions we thought were going to be smaller. We were a bit disappointed that there was no suggestion from the waiter about our over enthusiastic order. But even more unsettling was this great abundance of food all came out at once. There was not even a suggestion of spacing out the meal, rather all thrown at us at once. The menu would have you believe that there are starters and entrees by the way it’s listed, but in retrospect it may have been a bit more of a “sharing” style/tapas type structure. Nonetheless, more care should have been given to the timing, what otherwise was, deliciously prepared food.
This was our first time at the vegetable butcher, we tried the Forbidden sesame Cauliflower and loved it! Also tried the sweet potato taco and it was so good that we ordered a second one! Yummy vegan goodness! Thank you for having vegan options!
ALWAYS 🍴ALWAYS 🍷ALWAYS 🥄EXCELLENT!
I have been back 3 times in 5 days...
For a GFer this is the place to dine, so many SAFE options.
Staff is GREAT! A must to dine here!
VB is strongest on appetizers / shared plates; we always get the Sesame Cauliflower and the Fingerling and Shishito dish. But what happened to the Fundido, that is the best dish we've ever had there? Tacos were interesting but not as satisfying as the apps.
2 warnings: unbeknownst to us they changed Happy Hour from ending at 6:30 to ending at 5:00 so don't get caught as we did. Other warning is that we ordered one of the most expensive bottles of red wine on the list and it was served at least 15 degrees too warm, had to get an ice bucket! When you're selling wine in the $50/60 range you should be storing and serving it properly.
Our food was delicious, but much spicier than expected. Both my partner and I love spicy food, so it wasn’t a problem, but I can see how this might put off other diners. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the unique ingredients used in some of the dishes.
The food was amazing. The server was knowledgeable and helpful with food suggestions. The menu is reasonably priced. As for the noise level, I can't really comment, as we were there early before it got crowded.
Will diffinetly be back.
When we made our reservation through Open Table, we were unaware that we were reserving our special college graduation meal for 8 at the bar as a group. Open Table should have made it more clear. If we knew we were selecting the bar, we would not have selected this restaurant.
Additionally, we knew it nothing about the prix fixed menu. Not sure if it was up to Open Table to share this information upon reservation, or the restaurant, when they phoned and texted asking for confirmation a few days before.
Owners rectified the situation and we had a wonderful time.
Great food, friendly and helpful staff that assisted with an inexplicable reservation snafu, good spot!
Was a bit annoyed when we got to the restaurant and they only were serving a special "grads" menu this weekend as Cal Poly commencement was taking place on Saturday and Sunday. Was pleasantly surprised with the choices (even if a little disappointed as I had looked at their regular menu when choosing the restaurant for our celebration dinner). $26/person for three courses was a good price for what we had. There were vegetarian and vegan choices in the mix so everyone was happy. Dishes were served family style. First course salad was delicious! Dessert was a bit weak in that it was a wedge of flavored watermelon on a skewer, but it was refreshing nonetheless. Would definitely go back if ever in SLO again to try their regular menu.
This was my second visit to this restaurant. Trendy casual vibe and easy to access. Big plus: Tables are spaced far enough apart that you can have a private conversation without having to whisper. Two fails: The server recited a long list of specials, and we chose two of them. No prices were given, but we ordered from that list believing the food would be the freshest and most original of the current menu - the usual reason a person would order a “special” item. One item delivered was the wrong one entirely. The second was essentially a half a roasted chicken with very little seasoning, not cut into sections, accompanied by a single roasted small chili pepper and two small cups of dipping sauces. The chicken meat was not at all special and wasn’t interesting or flavorful at all. Zero fun with this item. I can easily buy a more flavorful whole or half chicken roasted at most markets and enjoy them a lot more. The wrong plate was taken away and replaced with the correct one, which was flavorful and satisfying. Price was about $18 for that one. My blah roasted chicken was $26!! I was pretty shocked at that but paid and left. I might go back if invited by my friend but would absolutely require statements of item cost and careful description of “specials.” I don’t like to slam restaurants, but I have to be honest in that this was a big disappointment.
We are visitors from Palm Desert. We dine out frequently and are vegetarians. The options here for vegetarians are limited but the had a very good vegan chocolate pudding dessert that was the best of what we ate. Overall an ok place to eat. Very attentive and great waiter.
The food was amazing. The service was perfect. I wish they had not taken the spinach dip off the menu. It was amazing.
Great food - fresh, seasonal and inventive. Great service - knowledgeable and friendly and quick!
There is always a disconnect between content and experience. If I said that I spent roughly $100 on drinks, 2 tacos, 4 pork ribs, and a dish of potatoes, you'd probably ask how I managed to get home. Quite well thank you. Expensive, given the raw materials? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely YES! The ribs had an insane tangerine tamarind glaze, the tacos were imaginative and beautifully presented, and the potatoes had a sauce that was indescribably good. A tangerine margarita was given an olfactory kick with a sprig of thyme. Give the Vegetable Butcher a shot.
The food was simple and delicious. I ordered the fingerlings and they are the best potatoes I've ever eaten.
Vegetable Butcher is always my first restaurant stop when visiting SLO. Highly recommend.
Enjoyed the food!
This is our second time here and it was just as painful as the first time. Food came out cold, and fatty meat being served cold is absolutely terrible. Our table sat for 25 minutes with no attention from the server. I had to physically find the manager and ask if our food was coming out. To our knowledge, our server only at three tables to tend to and it was beyond frustrating to be paying higher price points for less than average service and food.
We love this place! The chef is very creative and the vegan and vegetarian options are every bit as delicious as the meaty options.
They are very good about working with you regarding food sensitivities too.
Great food and service. We went at 5:30 and noise level was good. Of course we are unsure of how the noise is when it is full later.
We celebrated the birthday of a vegan. She loved it as well as the rest of us, none of which were vegetarians. Our server, Michael, was so attentive and wonderful. I will ask for him again. We sat in the area near the front window which was so quiet. This is important since we had two gentlemen with poor hearing. We were there on a Tuesday night.
This was our first visit. Service was ok — sat at the table for close to 10 minutes before anyone came to our table — and the restaurant was NOT busy. Our waitress was so soft spoken she had to repeat everything three times before actually hearing what she said. Short rib taco was amazing and so was the shrimp taco special. Also ordered the rice and bean bowl with added steak. The steak was way overdone and the beans were UNDERDONE!! All in all it’s a pretty limited menu. Lots of vegetables/vegan options. I was shocked to see they let dogs into the restaurant!! When I asked the hostess about it she just shrugged and said they were told it was a therapy dog! But it was clearly NO therapy dog! Made me wonder how clean the restaurant really is if they let dogs in!
Unfriendly and unwelcoming hostess who did not seem to care we had arrived or had a reservation. The menu options lack a diverse flavor profile other than spicy. Many of the items are deep fried which totally shatters the flavor of their namesake (Vegetable). I came to Vegetable Butchered and got Butchered Vegetables and Palate.
We split three small plates between two of us and it was the perfect amount of food. We had fingerling potatoes, a little gem salad and spicy cauliflower. All three were wonderful. We each had a glass of Cava as the suggestion of our server, and she didn't steer us wrong. It was lovely. WE agreed we will definitely go back again, and we might even have the same things, we liked them so much. That would be a shame though. There are lots of other good looking items on the menu that we want to try.
I love eating here. The are GF knowledgable, friendly, very accommodating. Beyond delicious dining. It is a warm and welcoming dining treat. Everyone should get a reservation and go on over!
Had a mixed experience there last night. The food was fine to good, but the service was lacking. We had reservations and were seated immediately upon arriving and given menus, though no wine list. (Please, give the wine list and the menu at the same time. Both are part of why I'm there.) It was almost ten minutes before we were greeted by a server, and then only because the wait was so long we had to ask a passing employee to send our server. No mention was made about the oversight. Problems sometimes come up, but don't just ignore that it ever happened. Apologize and then go forward- No big deal.
The food was fine: we ordered the Shishito Frito as a starter, which is amazingly good. Each of our entrees were good, the special burger and the Little Casa Ensalada with Chimichurri skirt steak. The chef came around and checked in with us twice, which was a nice touch.
Our evening meal was fine. My wife/date was wonderful and we had a good time, but it's difficult to shake that horrible beginning.
Creative food and good variety within a fairly small menu. Protein choices were all a bit dry, over cooked. The atmosphere is lively and at times got too loud to hear conversation amongst our party. Portions are reasonable, not huge, and seem more appropriate for sharing appetizers with friends than having a single entree all to yourself, if you are on a budget.
We loved it! Really great food and enough variety for each of us. I love the way you can have just a little bite or make it more of a meal with add-ons. I had a taco of the day and it was absolutely delicious! Will definitely go back when we are on SLO next!
Very unique dishes. Many vegan and vegetarian; small plates but additions can be added.
If you want a good vegan based and unusual choices I recommend this highly.
Kale and shishito peppers appetizer was delicious! The pork belly taco was outstanding! And the short rib enchilada was muy bueno!! 👌🏼😋
I was blown away by the Vegetable Butcher! My wife and I were in downtown SLO running errands, and I decided that she needed an impromptu date...quick scan of Open Table, next thing you know we're getting seated at a lovely table in the window. Our server Emily was perfection, with just the right balance of suggestions and letting us enjoy ourselves. We ordered some random small plates, all wonderful, favorite was the Tennessee Hot Chicken taco! We can't wait to move here this summer and become regulars at the Vegetable Butcher!
It was great in the beginning but when the food came out mahi mahi fish tacos were undercooked! The enchiladas came out hot and cold which was odd! Waitress said both plates were “extremely hot” not the case! Waitress was nice but kinda of disappear at the middle if the meal my drink was never refilled. Chicken fried tacos were bland no flavor and plantain taco well it could have been the smallest plantain on the planet! The ambiance is amazing and the decor is spot on! They just need real chefs in there who can cook! The hostess was very nice had always smiled!
Very flavorful dining experience. Good for vegans with several meat options also available. Vegetarian enchilada was delicious; sweet and spicy . Mahi-mahi taco also wonderful. The fried kale and peppers appetizer is out of this world. Nice wine and beer selections, too. Was pretty busy on a Monday so definitely make a res on the weekend.
Our 4th time and will continue to go!
Excellent food and always good service.
Most people I tell did not realize that they also have meat and fish.
The name misleads them.
we loved this place..... amazing service and delicious food... options for both of us.... veggie non veggie....
Loved the inventive flavorful items on the menu. Love that you can have them with her without animal protein. Great place for everyone whether you’re a vegan vegetarian or carnivore!
Skip. We’ve been twice — once when it first opened, and a second time just a couple weeks ago. Both were fiascoes when it came to receiving our food in any sense of a timely manner. If you have all night to wait for some decent (but also songs very mediocre) food, then check it out. Otherwise your time is better spent elsewhere. On the positive side, both times the servers and managers apologized for the 90+ minute wait between ordering the food and receiving it, and comp’d some of the meals.
Important to understand this restaurant is not just Veggies but includes meat products too. The grilled veggies as a starter and side dish was excellent. The chicken enchilada was also excellent and one was quite enough when combined with the veggies. There is a bar scene at which meals are apparently served too. The concrete floor and sparse decor makes for a cooler ambience but the crowd noise (Saturday night) provides a nice vibe. If it is cool, try to secure a table away from the door as the arrivals do not move all the way in or use the waiting area leaving the door open for drafts. A definite place to return to explore the menu.
The ambiance was amazing! And the food was dreamlike! I will be back with out a doubt!
Such a unique and special place, just love it. Terrific menu, you can't go wrong with anything. Great service.
