Vault 164 Ratings and Reviews
We had a horrible dining experience here. Service was awful, they served my son RAW chicken and then forgot to reorder him new ones leaving him french fries to eat (and never removing the raw chicken away from the table). No one apologized for this awful mistake, waitress was never around, we had to wave her down from across the room. All the food was okay, but definitely not worth the $. I was so upset, the menu was so promising and being new to the area we thought this would be a new go too. Instead I promise to never return again.
I had a great dining experience at Vault 164. We ordered off of the 'Small Plates' portion of the menu. The food was very, very good!! Sweet potato fries were amazing and so was the calamari!! Can't forget the dungeness crab artichoke dip and pork belly! We had six people 6-7 plates and it was enough for us before we went drinking at the bars later. Our server was super attentive and really nice! We came in pretty late (9:30) and the kitchen closes at 10. We did order everything before the kitchen closed but it was nice that our waitress didn't seem irritated or pressured us and ensured us she would not close the kitchen until we were satisifed with what we ordered. Thanks so much for the great experience! I'm looking forward to coming back.
It's in downtown San Mateo, so parking is a problem.....especially early evening weekdays, so come early as it make take some time to find parking. It's also a block from the train station, so walk-in bar crowd is high. Recommend reservations as on both visits, they had my table waiting for me when I walked in. I used open table as my reservation vehicle.
Delicious! First time to this restaurant and both of our meals were very good. Interesting menu and we'll go back to try the Vermont-cheddar-burger another time. The Baked Alaska dessert is fun - it was enough for three or four people! Service was excellent, too.
I met a friend for dinner during the week and we were both disappointed. She had the pork chop and I had the baby back ribs. My ribs were very fatty and her pork chop had a ton of gristle on it. Neither of us finished our meal which was a bummer, considering the entrees are $25-30.
I love the appetizers at The Vault! We went for a girls-get-together. The wine and cocktails are yummy. The only "weird" thing was our 1st server. Nice enough guy, but came off slightly odd/rude with his food/wine suggestions; we didn't find him very helpful nor pleasing to work with. But the food came out quick, was really yummy, and the 2nd server was very helpful and checked on us often! And had great drink recommendations.
The food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The cocktails were also very tasty. I had the chipotle-rubbed skirt steak, which was fantastic. we celebrated my wife's birthday here with a group of friends, and it was the perfect place for a birthday dinner!
This place is great, but avoid sitting at a booth table. The bench seat is low in comparison to the table while the opposite chairs are proportionately tall. Therefore, whomever in your party gets seated on the bench is going to feel like a toddler in need of a booster seat!
We waited over 20 minutes for the server to even greet us, then another 20 mins for drinks. It was absolutely terrible service and I ordered the fish and it was so over cooked that it was inedible. I couldn't even send it back because the server was no where to be found. I took business colleagues to dinner and it was embarrassing!
I read some reviews on Yelp where some people didn't have the best experience. I went there on a Saturday night. The service was excellent. Me and my date had our flat iron steaks cooked perfectly to order. The flavor was great and I have nothing negetive to say. I happen to be very particular and crtique every aspect of my dining experience. I was very pleasantly surprised. The menu choices were very nice and the kitchen is willing to accommodate special dietary needs. The layout of the seating in the restaurant is a little odd. Ambiance was fair. Prices were a touch on the high side but I have no problem paying a little more for a great food experience. The great service helped tie everything together nicely. I will go back for sure.
I visit Vault 164 frequently. It's my favorite special-occasion restaurant in San Mateo, and I am here frequently with friends and with my kids. They provide great service and the food is very good. Excellent wine list! Great, creative cocktail list. Nice place for a meal, or just a quick bite and glass of wine at the bar.
They are pricey but the food is generally quite delicious. Especially the brussels sprout chips (free, if you check in on Facebook!). The kids menu is extensive and includes a delicious sundae for dessert.
Brad, the owner, is frequently walking the dining floor talking to guests, which I like to see.
I will note that they have fewer vegetarian items on the menu than they used to. Perhaps it's the current seasonal menu, but there used to be, at various times in the past, a portobello mushroom sandwich, several flatbreads (many of which were vegetarian), and an additional salad or two. Now, there are 2-3 vegetarian 'meals' to choose from, tops, and that includes a salad item. Wish they had more options!
That said, it is still a special occasion-worthy visit in San Mateo. I'll continue to return.
We had a fantastic, low-key family dinner celebrating our anniversary. We had early reservations to have a relaxing and quiet meal and were not disappointed. Not only did we all enjoy our food, but we were treated to some of the best service by our gracious and attentive server, Karina. She was extremely kind and made our evening special. We will go again!
The service was great. My sis-in-law and I ordered the BLT. Reviews rated it high. We were disappointed. The top bread was a toasted slice of bread, but the bottom bread was the bottom of a bun, not even toasted. Weird!! Both breads should be toasted slice bread. Service was very good. We were a group of 5 and we felt comfortable eating and talking leisurely.
We went here on a Monday night for a family celebration of my son's 18th birthday that needed to be in or near San Mateo. He wants to be a chef so we were looking for something that had creative dishes for a teen with an appetite. No tiny plates for this guy. The prices, though not cheap, were more reasonable compared to other restaurants we looked at and they had dishes that our 16-year-old nonfoodie daughter would like. She got the fish and chips. Huge portions. She only ate half. I liked my poached pear salad. Salmon corn chowder was okay. Calamari appetizer was good. The pork chop dish was impressive. Both kids loved the mashed sweet potatoes that came with it. The side dish of mac and cheese and bacon disappeared quickly. My vegetarian husband ordered the spaghetti squash entree, and the squash was mushy. Everyone's meals were nice and hot. Hard to get that most places we've been to lately.
The desserts we shared were great. Baked Alaska was huge! The chocolate chip cookie dish with ice cream was really good too. Peach crisp was yummy. Key lime pie was good, not great.
On a Monday night there were business people here and a few families with older kids. I wouldn't recommend if you have toddlers, though it is somewhat noisy so it's possible.
