Asked for steak to be medium and it was served dry and over well done. Waiter was really nice and took it right back, I was then served rare steak and did not eat it, the fries were gross they tasted as if they were fried in old oil and even fried twice. Was with a group of friends and did not want to appear unhappy, so I just paid for a meal that I did not eat.
The place was cold and un inviting, there were several large groups so it was extremely loud, and no one came to take drink order or welcome us for at least 15 mins. It was my sons bday and I had wanted it to be special, I had to remind them to bring a dessert with a candle and we order fries, and never got them. The food was good though, but not worth returning for.
The food here is excellent. For our fairly large group of 10, conversation was almost impossible; so loud in there. We needed to shout, to be understood by family sitting directly across the table. This would be a nice dining experience, with reasonable sound levels...
Took mom out for NYE dinner and what a pleasant surprise! Seated promptly (we had reservations) and the server was excellent! We had the cauliflower latke as an appetizer and the apple jam made the dish! The pork entree was juicy and the short ribs were eaten with a fork.
The dessert was a wonderful ending to a great experience- Baked Alaska. Very well presented with flambé and all!
Lucky to snag a same-day rez for a family Christmas Eve dinner for 6 after my brother showed up as a surprise from Texas. Called and begged to add one more and they accommodated us! Woo-hoo! Everyone enjoyed the atmosphere, not being rushed on such a hectic day. Enjoyed the Brussels chips, calamari and crab cakes to start. Dinners were spaghetti squash pasta, fish & chips, prawns, and 4 filets. Delicious all around. We especially liked the au gratin potato side and lemony green beans. Fantastic place for family dinner, friends out, and work dinners. Great value as steaks include sides and prices are reasonable. Thank you!
Brunch/lunch over the holiday weekend meant that place would be packed, and it was. Concern rose when business did not open at stated time. Panic-aside was alleviated with quick seating, bloody mary, beers, and water for all. Had three appetizers - brussel sprout chips, pork belly ends, and bacon wrapped dates. Tough choice as my fav between brussel sprout chips (which I usually don't eat) and dates (which I love and with bacon!!!) Deal though is the Banker lunch - enough portions and quick for eat-and-go. Service was friendly, helpful, and timely to our requests. Recommend for group gatherings and stop after/before SFO.
We had a horrible dining experience here. Service was awful, they served my son RAW chicken and then forgot to reorder him new ones leaving him french fries to eat (and never removing the raw chicken away from the table). No one apologized for this awful mistake, waitress was never around, we had to wave her down from across the room. All the food was okay, but definitely not worth the $. I was so upset, the menu was so promising and being new to the area we thought this would be a new go too. Instead I promise to never return again.
I had a great dining experience at Vault 164. We ordered off of the 'Small Plates' portion of the menu. The food was very, very good!! Sweet potato fries were amazing and so was the calamari!! Can't forget the dungeness crab artichoke dip and pork belly! We had six people 6-7 plates and it was enough for us before we went drinking at the bars later. Our server was super attentive and really nice! We came in pretty late (9:30) and the kitchen closes at 10. We did order everything before the kitchen closed but it was nice that our waitress didn't seem irritated or pressured us and ensured us she would not close the kitchen until we were satisifed with what we ordered. Thanks so much for the great experience! I'm looking forward to coming back.
It's in downtown San Mateo, so parking is a problem.....especially early evening weekdays, so come early as it make take some time to find parking. It's also a block from the train station, so walk-in bar crowd is high. Recommend reservations as on both visits, they had my table waiting for me when I walked in. I used open table as my reservation vehicle.
Delicious! First time to this restaurant and both of our meals were very good. Interesting menu and we'll go back to try the Vermont-cheddar-burger another time. The Baked Alaska dessert is fun - it was enough for three or four people! Service was excellent, too.
