Our first experience was much better then our second. We stayed in Norfolk on two separate occasions. Our first stay we had dinner and breakfast at Varia- both were good. Service was slow but overall it was okay.
We were looking forward to dinner and breakfast at Varia during our second visit to Norfolk. Dinner was okay but breakfast was a big disappointment. Service was terrible and the food was not great. Chances are we would probably not go back to Varia if in Norfolk again.
Very good looking, the place and the food. But expensive (even for us) and inconsistent. Started with a pizza, very good. Then the garden salad, also very good and enough for 3 people to share. Entrees were part good and part ... what was the Chef thinking. Extensive wine list, almost all choices I've never heard or seen before, and the choice we made was meh. IMO Italian reds are not to be chilled; took forever to get to room temperature and just not good, only drinkable. Service was also a downside, she was very inexperienced it seemed and did not pay enough attention to us to even keep our water glasses filled. Ratings are inflated for what you get IMO.
Food was excellent and service was terrific. The piano was too loud and we could really converse. It was a distraction. I play the piano and the performer was very talented, but it’s unnecessary and took away from the ambiance. Everything else was great.
One entree came out cold, food was still good tasting but we had to send back to reheat.
Waitress was very friendly but not ontop of things 100%
Food and atmosphere is amazing. A little high on the price but not over the top.
Great food! Live Jazz was a bit loud, but entertaining.
Varia is simply 5-star in my opinion. The ambience is lovely; calming; and conducive to a romantic, business, or special occasion meal. The background piano and occasional vocal music is a perfect complement to dinner. The staff are 'over-the-top' kind, courteous and helpful: they all exude warmth, friendliness, and a welcome feeling. The food is cooked to perfection; the wine list is all anyone would want; and the service is efficient and timely, beyond any I've experienced. The maitre-d', a beautiful woman who made our selection of table easy and prompt; our waiter (Adrian) and breath-taking, fashion-model waitress (Jasmine), were a joy to interact with. I felt I was blessed to be in their presence. There is no better restaurant in Tidewater, Virginia, than Varia. I would highly recommend everybody find some time to enjoy a glorious meal and create a life-long memory by going there.
We went to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday. We absolutely loved this restaurant. The food was wonderful and I like the fact that you can see the kitchen and staff preparing your dinner. We also discovered a private dining room behind a couple of book shelves. Definitely will plan to have an event in there. Overall, we’re very satisfied with our experience at Varia.
AJ was wonderful server and the music was nice
Overall pretty disappointed. The only good part about the restaurant is the ambiance. Other than that, I would not recommend going. My table was not set up when we sat down. The food was pretty mediocre at best for the price you pay. My table ran out of water because they never came around for refills. When my table was unhappy about the service, a manager never came around to inquire about our dissatisfaction. Finally, the music in the restaurant is just way to loud (which is nice if you are going to the bar, but not if you are trying to have an upscale dinner). It is so loud that you can barely hear the people at your table and even our waiter had to ask us to repeat our orders cause he could hear us. There are better italian restaurants in Norfolk that I would go to before booking a reservation here.
The ambiance was so nice and the food was very good! I went with a group of friends for a birthday celebration and we had an amazing time!!! Will definitely be back!
Great food, service , ambiance and entertainment!
Excellent food. A bit loud. New waitress, very sweet, needs experience.
Loud- unable to hold conversation- poor service, bill wrong, great food
Wonderful meal best atmosphere
Very impressed with 3 out 4 dishes! The seafood was very good...the wagon wheel Italian dish was not good. Our server must have been new...reaching over us, brought our kids bottles of soda because she forgot to make the Shirley temples. Not well informed of options. Saltines on the lower level of the Hilton was fabulous! I would rather eat there!
Very poor quality food for the price. I would not try this restaurant again.
Good food, service and wine. Piano was a little loud for conversation but it was nice music (next time we’ll ask to go a little further from piano). Went up to Grain after for a beverage- nice city views. A great evening. And parking is easy and inexpensive.
Our experience at Varia was excellent. I lived the atmosphere and food presentation. Be aware that what is on the happy hour menu online is not offered in house and really they did not have many happy hour items which I found disappointing as there was quite a bit online. In this day and age of technology what’s advertised online should be honored in the restaurant. I loved it there eve still and would go back.
Food was very good. I loved the Veal Osso Bucco
Great atmosphere!! Great Customer service and experience!!
Great spot for date night!!!!!!!!!!! #BougieNights
Spent the week in Norfolk, staying at the Hilton on Main Street. Excellent location and restaurants in the hotel. We received excellent food and service outstanding service from AJ @ Varia! The staff at Varia treated us like royalty that evening, even with glasses of champagne! The food was excellent as well.
It's upscale-ish for a hotel restaurant. The food is tasty and not horribly expensive. I was a bit upset that when my kids ordered sodas, and then asked for refills, we were charged $12 for 4 sodas... and weren't told there was a refill charge. That was quite disappointing and why I put 3 stars and not 4.
Our appetizer came out cold. My pasta was under cook and I found multiple crab shells in my dish, and my sauce was so thin it wouldn't coat the noodles. Very displeased.
Service appetizer and drinks were great however. King crab leg pasta still had many shells through the dish. Deal breaker!
Went for Father’s Day. They had a special....$55/person. The food they gave us easily would have fed 10 people. We brought 4 large bags of food home. I missed pictures of the first course (calamari, grilled octopus, bruschetta, caprese salad).
Delicious food. Waiter was poorly trained. He did not chill a bottle of white wine for 2; used terms of endearment when speaking with an older woman, which we found inappropriate. He failed to bring promised bread to the table and then said, “You have to ask for it.”
The wine list was not up to date; the sommelier was unaware that a requested wine was listed on the electronic wine list as only a taste and not by the bottle.
One of my Norfolk favorites. Always great food and service. New tapas size menu options are a great add!
The Main is beautiful. Varia itself is gorgeous. Food came out timely and was great. Calamari was awesome. Brussels were great. We had a gnocchi and marsala; not the best pasta we've had but still tasty. Zack was are server and was pretty consistent throughout service. He did disappear for 20 minutes after our dinner course without explanation which lowered my rating. Another server took our dessert order and that was a bit awkward. Other than that, we love this place, love the ambiance. Definitely recommend.
Great food. Matt the Wine guy was great.
This place is amazing and the service is impeccable
I wish you could rsvp at the front area for tasting the wine. Maybe being able to make rsvp in dining or near the front near the tasting area.
Such a disappointing experience. When we sat done, no server came to greet or us take drink orders for 30 minutes. Then the whole meal went on like that. Sat at 6:45, didn’t get check until 10pm. I ordered most expensive thing on menu and by the time it came it was very dried out like it sat under a heat lamp. Love the Hilton restaurants at the beach, this was unbelievably disappointing
Love this place! The food, service and ambiance cannot be beat.
Food and service was great. We were seated close to the piano and singer so it was a bit difficult to hear each other. So we enjoyed the live music.
The food was amazing and we had just about the best waiter we have ever had. Everything was first class
I was very surprised at the prices. Thought it would have been more expensive. Excellent service and food to match. Will return.
Varia was a great date night restaurant with amazing food and a bartender that really knew his stuff! The chicken marsala was underwhelming, but I would highly recommend the octopus and gnocchi! Would have given 5 stars, but the restaurant was not busy and they seated us all the way in a back corner by ourselves, service was extremely slow, and the live piano singer was terrible. They would have been better off playing cool lounge music (like Buddha Bar).
