Vargas-Montreal Ratings and Reviews
The noise level was phenomenally high, causing all present to carry on conversations by shouting with obvious results. Food was between average and mediocre, with hot entries served on lukewarm plates. Service was unprofessionally friendly. The restaurant was understaffed with poor attention to the continuity of the meal & significantly delayed simple requests.
Excellent service and food. My daughters 16th birthday and we had a group of 6. We brought a home-made cake and candles and they accommodated us nicely. My wife and daughter ordered the Atlantic salmon and loved it. I ordered the filet Mignon and it was great. Portions are just the right size. We ate at 6 and it was fairly empty but it filled up by the time we left at 8:15. Liked the fact that the restaurant was not too noisy.
Celebrated my birthday here and unfortunately I wasn’t pleased. I ordered the cod fish in a cream sauce that lacked flavour, my side order of skinny fries was a tad on the soggier side, and my birthday crème brûlée was over torched causing me to eat burnt bits. The noise level was very loud; hard to talk to my company. I ended up getting sick after my meal.
Our main wait staffer was quite cold too.
My company found their meals to be decent for the most part but agreed to our waiter being cold.
Filet mignon was tasteless and not tender at all. My 18 oz rib steak was quite small. New York cut was average at best. I make better steaks at home on my BBQ to be truthful. We usually go to The Keg, and now know better. The Prime Rib, to be fair, was pretty good. The waitress was not very good...she did not know the meaning of "steak spice", she did not describe an appetizer properly causing us to order something that someone could not eat, etc....very disappointing overall.
Walking in to the restaurant you immediately notice the wine cellar. The ambiance of the establishment is romantic due to the high ceilings, the low lights and the draperies surrounding the restaurant. The music was not overwhelming. We spent about 2 hours here.
We had the salmon tartare as an entree. It was exquisite and fresh. Their sushi pizza is a nice size. The Cabarnet Sauvignon and Chardonnay we ordered by glass were both at perfect temperature. For our mains we had two rib steaks, one was slightly underdone, and the lobster mash was not as smooth as I would of liked it, however our waiter was delighted to fix this problem immediately. We had the sauteed mushrooms as well. They were earthy and tender. Finally for dessert, we had their creme brulee which was at the ideal consistency and packed with flavor. If you enjoy decadence in the combined form of chocolate, fudge and cheesecake, the la frenaie cake is a must.
All their items are priced reasonably for the value and portion you receive. We will certainly return again for that tartare! Cheers.
