We attended the final dinner at Valentino's on New Year's Eve. We have eaten there many times, and wanted to say good bye to a favorite spot. We had just eaten there a few month ago, and had a great time. Our waiter made our last time not quite a pleasure. We asked about wine pairing, which was mentioned on the pre-printed menu, but he said we could just make our own selections. After our initial glass of champagne, he never came back to inquire about our next wine choices, and when we flagged him down, he recommended 2 particularly bad wines. We had to ask for bread plates, and he brought us salad plates to use. They were out of the entree I chose (Osso Buco), but he waited so long to tell me that my second course was almost the same as my third course (short rib pasta/short ribs). We heard another waiter telling the people next to us about the dessert choices, so when our waiter said there was only 1 choice, we had to tell him we knew there were other options. We will continue to have great memories of Valentino's, but we wished we had allowed our previous visit to be our last.

As patrons of Valentinos for over twenty years. We wanted to go one more time before they close. Early reservation, 5PM, to avoid rush. Piero greeted us as always. Seemed a bit flustered, handed us off to waiter who’s been there forever, but very rude. Seated us, now another waiter, two months on the job. Fortunately our usual waiter appeared to welcome us, but was not working tonite. New guy brought menus, very limited choices, took drink orders, delivered them, and hovered around the table waiting for us order. Seemed in a hurry. We asked if it would be possible to get our salad, a bib lettuce with warm blue cheese, he said no. Valentinos is known for fulfilling customer special requests. Rude waiter comes back, and says, will check to see if chef can prepare. Returns, and said no. Said fine, give us a moment. Rude waiter back, now says, chef can make our salad, but we have to order complete meal immediately. Salad at table in three minutes. Requested bread three times. Never offered water, had to ask. My halibut was excellent, vegetables were extremely scarce, eight green beans, one very small roasted potato. My husband’s steak was very good, and well prepared, again vegetables a joke. Since our waiter never checked on us, my husband asked the bus boy for gravy, or sauce for steak, and mashed potatoes. Waiter returns, said can’t do. Then the bus boy brought the sauce. When rude waiter appeared to clear dishes, my husband called our waiter over to the table, to show him, in fact there was sauce available. Again more excuses. Ordered a decaf cappuccino, no foam, tasted horrible. I told him to take it away. Never have been so disappointed. Worst service I have ever encountered at Valentinos. Probably did not care, as this was their last night in Santa Monica. Their glory days have obviously been over for a long time. I thought I would be sad to see them go, but after tonight, it’s definitely time.

This was it — the end of 40 years of dining well, and we’re going to miss it... very much. Buona fortuna, Piero, and thanks for all the wonderful meals.

Valentino is closing their doors and apparently this gives them license not to care any more. This restaurant was once a storied Los Angeles landmark where one received exceptional service and sublime food. Last night the food was mediocre and the service was outright rude and hostile and condescending. What should have been a celebration became one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I have ever had in 30+ years of enjoying Los Angeles’s culinary pleasures. I had looked forward to this evening for four months and the night was ruined. I can assure you I will never be visiting a Piero Selvaggio restaurant again.

Not at all what I remember a decade ago. Major changes in ambiance, food quality, and service. Cheap decor, paint jobs, and furniture. Subpar food quality. Scallops were extremely fishy. I could smell them across the table. Devoid of the elegance and class it was once known for. A very sad goodbye to a former icon. So long.

This was a farewell visit before Valentino closes in Santa Monica and moves to Newport Beach. Will sorely miss the graciousness and excellent food. Now we will have to rely on their cookbook and memories of wonderful meals dating back to the 1970s.

The food was good but the service was not. We asked for bread three times. The waiters were confused which dishes were to be delivered to what tables. I remember this restaurant from way back, not the same.

We ordered the salad special appetizers, pasta and the vanilla and praline pudding. Every dish was more delicious than the last. Service was excellent. We're going to miss Valentino.

Valentino was extremely off today. Maybe it is short timers syndrome as their imminent closure is days away. The veal was mediocre. The service was terrible. Granted it was very busy. The service was so bad and nobody loved their meal.

One if LA's truly great restaurants of all time. Closing 12/31/18. Will be missed hugely. Worth supporting the owner's new venture in Orange County.

Valentino's is closing permanently on December 31, 2018. Service was slow this evening especially after we finished our entre. Every table was full and we decided to leave rather than wait for desert & coffee.

Our reservation was for 6:15, we were on time. There was only one or two parties in the dining room at that time. We ordered wine and water, it was served. At that time we ordered some appetizers, salads, and our mains. The appetizers and salads came and then that was it...nobody came to our table after that. At 7:30 we decided to leave (without getting our main dishes). One of the worst dining experiences of my life. It's a good thing they are closing. Thank God.

I didn't think it was possible for the mushroom tortino to be any better than it had been in the past. I was wrong. The chef added just a hint of lemon to the sauce and every bite was a brief trip to heaven. Valentino has been a reliable place for *really good* Italian food for over 40 years. I'm really sorry to see it close. We have still a few days left in 2018 -- get a reservation and dine here if you can.

Obnoxious servers and obnoxious bartender. I was very surprised. Pretty much everyone there made us feel like we did not matter. We had to wait a long time and they spoke down to us when they did interact. The food was good but I guess they don't feel that service is important.

I can see why they are closing, good riddance. We had an 8:45 pm reservation and arrived about two minutes thereafter. There was no one to greet us or check our reservation and after we stood around for a few minutes, a server waved us to one of the tables at the bar. (Another frustrated couple in the same situation had apparently been waiting some time as well and a third couple facing the same fate decided to eat dinner in the bar area.) Piero breezed by, claiming he would have a table ready for us in two minutes--he then disappeared for a full half hour. Several minutes later, an apologetic bartender brought us a couple of sodas as we waited until 9:15 pm to be seated. Although our server was instructed that we had been waiting some time, another 20 minutes passed before our order was taken. The bread--which we specifically had to request--arrived after the starters, and our entrees arrived about 20 minutes after the salad/soup plates were cleared. We skipped dessert just so we could leave before 11. While the food was adequate (but certainly not amazing), it certainly didn't live up to the expectations of this storied establishment and the horrible service completely ruined our Valentino experience. If you want to try it one more time before it closes, just enjoy your memories.

Closing at the end of the month. Food is great, but the service is horrible, like always, and it is time to go! Best of luck to Piero and Staff.

Previous visits were great. My wife and I went for our anniversary, wanting another special meal before Valentino closed its doors. Disappointing. Very slow service. Pasta dish was average, fresh fish so-so. My wife did enjoy her lobster bisque. The recommended wine was very nice. Otherwise, not the kind of dining experience based on the history-- and prices-- of Valentino.

IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN OUR GO TO RESTAURANT FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS. SAD THAT THIS OCCASSION WAS NOT SO SPECIAL. VALENTINOS NOW LEAVES A VERY BAD TASTE IN OUR MOUTHS.

Valentino is as it's always been, which is its problem -- even restaurants in italy have changed. A pleasant enough but past its prime fossil

Had been years since my last visit. Our group decided to go due to their closing soon. Our group raved about the crab cakes and the octopus. Incredible. The prosciutto with burrata beautiful. The corkage a bit high at $40, but they cut that in half since we bought a bottle off the list. Lovely Fiano white. Raves all around for entrees. Salmon perfect. Short Ribs over Polenta incredible. The gnocchi was spectacular. The ticket at the end does take your breath away, but for a special occasion well worth it. Sorry to see it end.

With Valentino planning to close at the end of this year, we just had to experience it again. We decided to go with old favorites, mostly. They were everything we expected. Linguini with clams, just a touch of jalapeno to spice it up -- not even enough to identify if I didn't know it was there. A perfectly balanced osso bucco with a lovely risotto. My wife had the mushroom tortino, and it was just *mmmmmmmm*. I decided to experiment and had the smoked quail appetizer. Really nice, if we go again, I'll probably repeat that. Really, if you like classic Italian food with a bit of creativity, go before December 31, because after that the lights go out. It would be a shame to miss this gem.

Few restaurants beat Valentino, and it will be missed. Grazie, Piero!
