Valdez - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Reception did not recall a change of 15 minutes in the original reservation. This change was done the day before. They wanted the group of four out in 1.45 hours. When we refused the manager/owner? ran and picked us in the street while we were going to Brassaii.
The service was slow and not personal at all.
Drinks and food were ok, nothing great.
Tips - in the menu they have an option starting with 18% gratuity. I personally don't have a problem leaving that and more if the service is good, but not for that kind of service.
Went to Valdez for ceviche and got great food, original cocktails and great service. There were 6 types of ceviche on the menu and Valdez offers an option of trying them all as a flight course. All of them were super fresh, original and well presented. Tequila based drinks were expertly balanced and matched food exceptionally well. Sitting close to the kitchen and watching Steve Gonzales prepare food was amazing too. We would love to come back soon.
The Chaufa was definitely the best dish I had, a nice flavored rice topped with duck confit is the must have dish to try and along side with a delicious and refreshing Mojito. The Albacore tuna was a good starter and very fresh, some others that would be worth mentioning would be the mixto (ceviche seafood with squid ink), the croquetas (patato, egg, olives), chori papa (chorizo with patatoes and peppers) and the chuzos al plancha (beef skewers with chimichurri). Great location right on King St vibrant area between Bathurst and Spadina where you'll find some great restaurants like Buca, Lee, Weslodge and many more.
My boyfriend and I went to Valdez for a Friday night dinner after many recommendations from friends. The atmosphere was awesome, good food and good night life post 11:30. For a romantic dinner it was a bit too loud as we didn't sit down until 10:00pm. If you went earlier you would probably be fine. Good selection of specialty drinks. Would love to go back to the patio upstairs in the summer. Overall would definitely recommend it for a group of friends.
After walking past this place many times before, my boyfriend and I made a reservation. We were greeted by friendly staff and were seated at the back. The food was ALL amazing and we love the Happy Hour drink/appetizer list! The music was upbeat and our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the food on the menu and super attentive.
We loved it so much that we went back almost a week later, bringing my cousin before going to see the broadway musical Chicago! As coincidence would have it, we ended up sitting at the same table as the first time! The food was unbelievable (again) and we noticed that there were a couple of newer items added. The waiter' recommendations were outstanding.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Valdez for great food and drinks!
Wait staff was great and friendly. The hostesses were out to lunch. To young to give an f. The flour manager leaned in the half wall which was attached to our table and Leaned there. And did nothing. Meanwhile our table beside him had finished played for picking up. Hello. The food was very good. Only downside were the ribs and beef skewers. Ribs were deep fried too long there was no meat left and the beef skewers were chewy/tough. For the price and staff....I would not recommend.
First thing's first - get the chaufa. Food was great, but it could be because my friend and I shared the chaufa and guac/chips. My only qualm was the service. Our server was a bit awkward, and didn't seem to know what cabernet sauvignon was. Other than that, Valdez was definitely the place to be on Thursday night.
Although food was tasty. Very noisy and pricey for what you recieved. Ordered 1 app salad 2 drinks mojitos (overpriced for what should be a pretty common drink)and 1 pot pie and shared empanadas (one order) with tax and tip well over 100.00. So approx 50.00 per person ???????? Many places in area that offer more for ur buck but new so had to try but wont again.
Food was disappointing -- portion wise and overall taste. The best of all the choices was the seafood pot pie, but there was a piece of spoiled lobster in it.
Our waitress seemed annoyed when we asked about the food. It's a shame Valdez's food isn't better since the decor is good. Lots of hard surfaces so sound bounced off and was really noisy. Would not recommend to friends and probably will not return.
My friend was driving and I had been on cold meds all day, so we opted for a virgin sour. It was great! We'll have to go back so we can try the proper version.
My friend had the duck dish - it was our fav. I had the fajita special and they were great.
If you make a reservation they only give you the table for two hours. It was fine for us on a Monday as a quick get together, but I wouldn't appreciate being on the clock most other nights.
Waited for 20 minutes after our reservation time (fine stuff happens), waitresses switched after taking our order for no apparent reason, and then lost our first order from fifteen minutes earlier. We ordered 3 full ceviches, and every appetizer - ceviche was great, and all 9 or so of the appetizers were bland or not nice at all, so we didn't order any mains - although we were full anyway. Wine was good, but that is hardly anything this restaurant can take credit for. Great atmosphere but overpriced below average food.
The food was good. It's different and delicious. I ordered the fish...it was good. But my friends ordered the rice dish, it was amazing! The ceviche is awesome as well. I would recommend this place for a group of friends. It atmosphere is cool and hip. Definitely a place with beautiful people...great for people watching.
This was a disappointing experience. Empty restaurant for a Tuesday lunch. Feel the ambiance will be a good fit for evening socializing. The portion size for lunch was dismal:- had to order a second dish. I received raving reviews about the food and would rate my experience as fair (Lunch: meatball soup & grouper dishes) - beware of sodium content of the soup.
The food brought so many great flavors and ingredients together. The ambiance was dimly lit with the most lively salsa music playing that kept your spirits up. The drinks are amazing too and on top of that the servers are very friendly and knowledgable. Definitely recommend this to all foodies and Mexican food lovers!
Have been here 3 times and like it a lot. Great feel to the place. Comfortable and energetic at the same time. Good wine. Service is decent, but a little slow to come around. I wasn't overly impressed with items from the ceviche menu, but everything else I've tried is great. The Chaufa is fantastic and can feed (and satiate) 2 people easily. Great for a late night + drinks.
Let's start off with the Chaufa. Everyone should honestly order the chaufa at Valdez - it's some sort of a heavenly concoction with fried rice and duck confit. The flavours are there, and it is divine. I came here on a Tuesday night, so it was a bit quieter than usual, but both me and my guest agreed that it would be a lively and awesome place to go for drinks. The service was spot on as well. For the dessert, do try the popsicles, which come with real fruit and are a great way to finish off a meal.
Ambiance was great. Food was tasty but was very Expensive and portions were small for the price . Being from Colombia, most of the food on the menu is extremely cheap to make and it looks like extortion when a resto charges more than they should. While tasty, one cannot overcome the loss of value because of overpricing . We will not be back.
Been here about four times since it's opened. The ambiance has always been very vibrant. It's a cool spot, really nicely designed. It's unique to Toronto.
The food quality keeps going downward. Perhaps it's a cost thing, I don't know, but it's not as good as it used to be. For groups, it doesn't much matter-the ambiance and the vibrant crowd will keep you distracted enough. For a date, though, not such a good idea. Especially not good considering the cost of food.
Great place to hold a birthday party or special event.
reso for 930 and we didn't get seated until 10. We specifically asked if someone could come get us from escobar in the back when our table was ready and they forgot and actually called my cell, left a message, and additionally sent a text saying we had 10 minutes get the table or we would lose it.
just seemed a little unorganized.
when we did get seated food was excellent and our server was very nice.
The dining experience at Valdez is a unique journey through what it might be like to eat in Latin America. The menu is exciting and interesting because many of the offerings were things that I had never tried before and I will go back to try more until I have tried everything on the menu. The drink menu is also very inviting, in particular the ITA "strong ale" mexican cerveza. I would suggest this dining experience to anyone whether it be for a date or a group of friends.
Worst service I have ever experienced. Started off well but after dinner our waitress simply brought us the bill without asking. We told her we would love a coffee and she actually told us that her manager had been pressing her to give us the bill for the last 45 mins. 'Are you actually asking us to leave?' her response was 'yes, my manager wants your table. There was no one waiting for it. We were not being loud/obnoxious, we spent a fair amount on dinner/drinks. My only guess is we weren't drinking enough. Regardless, unacceptably poor customer service. We will not be back and we WILL tell our friends. Thanks Valdez manager for ruining what was for most of the evening, a great impression.
Enjoyed Valdez. Ordered the following:
Guac and chips - guac had too much lime but I eat a lot of guac so am quite particular about it. Varied chips were just amazing. Great touch.
Camaron ceviche - very tasty, loved it
Fajitas - average. I expected a twist but they were very Tex-Mex. please do NOT use plastic portion containers for tbe toppings. I get that it makes it easier to pre-portion during prep but its wasteful and such a bad look with eveything else being so nice.
Chaufa - the best. i would come back just for this. duck was so full of flavour. enjoyed it a lot.
Mojito - very good
Great spot. Will try more ceviche next time.
The modern rustic look and feel of Valdez was well executed in the look and presentation of Latin American food. The casual, rustic and Latin feel of the restaurant created a good vibe throughout our meal. The price point is moderate, but I do feel that some of the dishes were over priced especially on apps. The overall the food is good, but there is need for improvement on balance on their seasoning.
