About Valanni

Valanni restaurant opened its doors in September of 2000, introducing "Medi-Latin" cuisine to Philadelphia. Situated right off of the "Avenue of the Arts," Valanni has become a pre-theater ritual and place to meet for a night-cap for many who live in and around the neighborhood. The bar at Valanni keeps up with the creative food served by offering an assortment of sangria, mojitos and other specialty drinks.

Vegetables paella was all rice with sparse vegetables. Steak skewers were sparse with meat. Pasta and shrimp was good but very little pasta.

Unfortunately, the food wasn't up to the standard of my prior visits. The calamari were cold and I would have preferred to have the sauce and peppers on the side so the calamari didn't get mushy.

Seating was in the furthest depth of the restaurant to stare at a tv screen of a graphic pic.

To make a reservation then be given I felt the last worse table.

To make it worse was being seated next to large party of 20 celebration To make it worse the large table leaves and another large party of 20 is seated next to us

I felt like i wanted to get through our meal as fast as possible to get out of The Claustrophobic atmosphere.

Food was very good and the service was above average. The place looks more like a lounge than a restaurant. Not many entree options, mostly small plates. The small plates were very small.

Food was very good. We got a bunch of the tapas style dishes, and they're delicious, but very expensive. For two people to have 2 drinks and dinner it was $150 with tip.

Excellent dinner - met our pre-theater needs! I booked a 6:15 reservation at Valanni after seeing their 3-course $35 pre-theater fixed-price menu which was served from 5-6:30. Due to traffic and unforeseen road closures, we didn't arrive until 6:40 p.m. We informed our hostess that we were very tight on time (show started at the Academy of Music at 7:30!) and she assured us that our server would take care of us, which he did. By then the pre-theater menu wasn't offered, but we wouldn't have had time for 3 courses anyway. We ordered entrees and wine, both of which were excellent, and made it to the theater in time. At 6:40 on a Thursday night, the restaurant wasn't at all crowded, and we had plenty of room and privacy for conversation. Loved the 80s music playing (not too loudly) in the background, too!

Fun place to try if you like sharing small plates. Cheese plate was very good as were the chicken empanadas and bacon scallops Caprese flatbread and trifle fries were also good. The cheesesteak rolls were just ok and the shiitake polenta was a miss. The shrimp did not taste good. Dessert of Oreo Beignet with coffee was a nice finish.

It was a Wednesday evening before a show and we arrived 15 min early, at 5:45pm, were seated immediately. The place was empty at first and we were seated in the back at a 2 top. I can agree with other patrons that seating is too tight and there’s not much space on your table for sharing multiple tapas because of previous experiences. We opted for the 3 course pre theater menu because the options and price were very good. The bill for two with wine and coffee was under $100. This also gave use more room on the very small table as the plates were not served all at once.
Pulled chicken empanadas were delish and my Boursin applewood smoked bacon burger was excellent, as was our dessert choice- Oreo Beignet with vanilla ice cream.
My husband chose the lamb meatballs, just ok, and the chicken saltimbocca- very good.
Service was very good, and not smothered, but it was a very slow time, not a weekend, and the night before Thanksgiving.

The food and service were very good. The lounge seating was kind of strange for dinner. Luckily no one was sat at the table next to us. It would have felt too close for comfort.

This was our second visit to Valanni. The food was very good although the menu had changed between visits. The only issues we had were the small table that we were seated at, with an ottoman instead of a chair, very little space between tables and the volume of the place during our meal. Granted there was a lot of events going on in Town that night but all of this combined did take away some of the enjoyment. Also since it was cold out and everyone was wearing coats, there was no place to hang them so they added to the lack of personal space.

We were unable to order several dishes at a time to share because of lack of space but at least the kitchen managed to space them out in arrival to our table.

We will probably come back but maybe not until Spring when it’s alittle warmer and there are fewer events going on.

We arrived early for our reservation and were directed to wait at the bar. We were not planning on drinking so we awkwardly ordered waters while we waited. The bartenders asked literally 4 times if we wanted a drink. I suppose we were encroaching on their valuable bar seats despite the fact that the bar wasn't close to being full. Not only did multiple bartenders ask the same questions but the same bartender hounded us twice for our drink order. Their behavior was rude and desperate. The hostess never came to get us from the area they designated we wait in, so I finally had to ask if our table was ready.

Had a reservation, seated immediately. Service was the greatest part of the night - checked in regularly, knowledgeable of the menu, and didn’t “ghost” at the end of meal when we wanted the check. Food was okay. Some apps were obviously frozen (cheese specific mezzes like fried goat cheese) and weren’t completely heated therefore kind of ice cold in the center. Wine was great along w/ ambiance. Tight fit for seating if you’re not at the bar. Overall good experience and worth trying but wouldn’t opt to return again for dinner date.

Paella could use a lot more seafood for the price. And more shrimp. Other visits food was better than last visit. Maybe Friday night busy and kitchen overworked.

My first time there for dinner, rather than brunch. A good variety of mezze (tapas) choices. The main course choices were fewer, and - while good - not exceptional. It is a noisier place in the evening than in the morning/afternoon. Our table was near the door and host station, and when people congregated there, some of our party were occasionally jostled - an engineering issue. The restaurant is well situated, near Broad Street (Avenue of the Arts); the menu is diverse, the staff is friendly and mostly efficient (some things had to be requested, such as cutlery). Clientele skews younger in the evenings than at brunch. (We were "older"...)

My husband and I had a fantastic dinner at Valanni! We shared 5 small plates -- bibb lettuce salad, octopus, feta in phyllo, Brussels sprouts and greek sausage -- each of which was delicious. We also enjoyed the specialty cocktails and extensive beer list. Valanni was a great choice for the two of us but we wished we were with a larger group so we could sample more options! We'll definitely go back!

Food was really good and our server, Olivia, was excellent. My only complaint was that when we were first taken to a table we were offered what looked like a standard two top table, but expected to both sit on one side, I'm assuming because they couldn't put a chair on the other side and still have a wide enough walkway for servers to pass. I was there with a friend to celebrate her birthday and besides it feeling awkward for the two of us to sit next to each other instead of across from each other, there's absolutely no way we would have both fit and had room for our plates and drinks.

I really loved the decor of the place, the food and drinks were great, but I think a bit more thought could go into the design so that people don't feel they're being squeezed into a table like sardines. It's not like we showed up during dinner rush with no reservations. We were there for a pre-theater dinner and had a 5:45 reservation.

The place was pretty busy, it was a beautiful evening so dining was both inside and outdoors, plus we were a group of six, yet service was timely and pleasant and helpful. Location was perfect for us, food was great, draft beer for the craft beer lovers among us, and service really was very good.

The menu was more bar-like than the last time we ate there, with only a few dinner entrees, but there were good options in the small plates (lamb sliders) and the truffle fries are delicious! People seated at the bar seemed to be enjoying their drinks and conversation. The service was very good; atmosphere pleasant, low-key and friendly.
