Valanni Ratings and Reviews
Went there pre orchestra. Very nice server. Nice drink menu. The two entrees we had were delicious- chicken saltimbocca and scallops.
Always liked the place for its variety of tapas, location and cozy atmosphere but now I know their large platters hold their own as well.
First time there and I would definitely go back. The food was amazing. The noise level was little high when we first arrived but as people started to leave it dies down. Ee did a combo of tapas and regular plates. Everything was amazing. I recommend the cheese board and the fried goat cheese and the oreo beignet for dessert.
The service was poor at best. I ordered a glass of champagne and it took 15 to 20 minutes. We both ordered steaks cooked to different temperatures and they switched the plates. They didn't bring us silverware when needed, spoon with soup, knife with steak, etc.
Have been to Valanni several times and have enjoyed the food and atmosphere. However, when my boyfriend I decided to go for Valentines the experience was horrible! I am beyond disappointed! For $65 per person we were given basically snacks that were not up to par with the quality of Valanni I had before. The shrimp in my ceviche were still raw. The ceviche itself was literally one shrimp and scallop cut into many small pieces. My boyfriend had the pork belly arugula salad. It was beyond bland with one piece of pork belly. His steak was well done and was served with frozen fries! They did not even ask how he would like the steak to be cooked! The mezze board was laughable with one piece of Brie. Portions were beyond small, quality was beyond poor. Service was decent. When it comes too fine dinning I never mind spending money, but the dinner was not even worth $25 per person let alone $65! Honestly the entire experience put a damper on on Valentines Day! HORRIBLE! I will never go there again. Seemed like they were exploiting couples on a night where they knew people would pay good money.
Our 5:00 dinner reservation was during happy hour, so we took advantage of half price tapas and craft beer on draft. The calmari was very lightly breaded and extremely fresh. The oysters were also extremely fresh. The (large portion) paella was flavorful, with (again) extremely fresh shellfish. The service was excellent.
We needed a dinner location close to the Academy of Music for a Saturday night concert. Valanni was well located so we made a reservation. Wow, what a good decision! When we told our server that we had a tight time window to make the concert in time, she gave us a prix fixe pre-theater menu and explained that the dishes on this menu usually come to the table more quickly than some others on the regular menu. All thee courses on the theater menu were terrific. As we left (on time) for the theater, we vowed to return to Valanni to try the rest of their offerings. What a great meal!
We went to Valanni for restaurant week. I was looking forward to the seafood palella, but was not as excited when my dish arrived. It was lacking something. I asked for some lemon on the side that def helped. Husband ordered the chicken dish on the menu and loved it. The desserts were SO good, must try!!! For appetizer, we had the calamari and fried goat cheese, both were really good. I just wish my palella was equally amazing but dont forget to ask for some lemon if you feel there is flavor lacking in yours too. Our server was extremely attentive and accomodating.
Seating itself is very congested and close together so if you dont mind that, then this is a cute spot. It does get really loud though and you will catch yourself saying sorry to the person sitting next to you and vice versa since the space is tight.
I would recommend this place for a time when it is not the busiest :)
This was for January 2018 Restaurant Week. The largest complaint against the location is definitely a front of house issue. The host was insufferable, raising a big stink over a member of our party running slightly late, refusing to seat until they had "assurances" they'll be here soon. Waiter had difficulties splitting a check. Bar glassware was dirty/sticky. The food ranged from good to really good, so kudos to back of house, you made it worth the trip. Additionally, the chairs we were in were basically glorified footstools.
Everyone has a place or two where the staff is pretty calloused towards the customers (like your favorite local pub) where their deference is almost charming. Valanni lacks the charm to be that sort of a place so it comes of cold and pretentious. Too bad, since the food was actually pretty good. Hard pass in the future.
We were seated quickly and our server was very attentive and took good care of our group of 8. It was restaurant week so there was a special menu which didn't have much to offer vegetarians. We were all in town for business so do not know if their regular menu would have offered more of a selection.
Five of us went for a girls night out during Center City Restaurant Week. We had never been to Valanni before. Our server was friendly and attentive, the food was delicious, the seating was comfortable and had a private feel in the room. Overall, a great experience.
Very accommodating staff- we were a bit late (we had called) and had less time than planned. They helped us get order in and food out in timely fashion and we made our event! The food was outstanding- every bite delicious. Cocktails were also excellent! Overall quite excellent and will return.
Very good. It was restaurant week which can sometimes be not a great time to eat out. But the food was really good and portions were fine. I had the Brussels sprouts which were delicious. Also had paella and choc. mousse. All were great. Our server was good but never asked us if we wanted coffee or tea.
The lamb sliders were incredible... the chicken saltimbocca not so much. My husband enjoyed his paella but the mussels as a starter were so-so. The oreo beignet was delicious as was the dirty martini. This is definitely a cozy seating, noisy restaurant with a lively bar scene. The seating is not that of your typical restaurant (small tables where you sat side-by-side or leather back less seats were mostly what we saw). We were a little bummed they were only offering the restaurant week menu as there were some other dishes we were interested in, but that happens often during restaurant week we have found. The value with the restaurant week pricing was good though. Not sure we would make an effort to return, but it was an enjoyable evening with good food and drinks.
Valanni was such a great experience. We were a little late and while they gave away our table, they still made sure to fit us in. The drinks were so delicious and the food was great. I was there with three other people and we were able to share all of our food. The paella and burger were our favorite entrees.
What a disappointment.
It was restaurant week so a fixed price menu on which the food was pretty good - more than one would normally order but tasty.
The big problem was the noise! Through some difficulty with the restaurant being able to get updates from Open Table, they had no record of our reservation but managed to seat us anyway - at a small table right by the door. Even here, the noise was too loud for any conversation at all. What evil genius planned a "live DJ" for restaurant week with a volume that couldn't be turned down even in the dining section? We got half way through the entrée and had to leave.
The manager was extremely unprofessional. We had a reservation. Upon arrival, we were told we would be seated in 5 minutes. There is no waiting space. We were waiting by the door practically on top of a table at which a couple was dining. Then they asked us to wait by the bar at which there were no chairs available and no where to stand/sit/wait without moving every 30 seconds to let a server through. 15 minutes later, we were told they "might" have a table for us. We went to look at it and it was a shared booth with another couple. Enough room for 2 people seated tightly. We were a group of 3. Waited another 15 min and were finally seated 30 min after reservation time. Manager told us it's not his fault, he can't make people leave, and everyone's been waiting 30 min. I told him if everyone's been waiting 30 min then it is his fault because he overbooked. He yelled at me. This was the cherry on top for a completely ruined dining experience. Server was polite and attentive and food was good. They need a new manager. I would come back as there were many things on the menu I'd like to try, but I'd rather not wait 30 min when I made a reservation in order to not wait, and then get yelled at by the manager.
Went here for restaurant week ... the menu looked to have some great options but the output wasn't anything spectacular. Drinks were well crafted but the food lacked any sort of complex flavor profile. It was very one note and they seemed like dishes that most at-home cooks could have done; and just as well. It was ok, certainly not bad ... but not a place that is a "must have" for me.
