Utsav Indian Bar and Grill Ratings and Reviews
We live in DC but always make a point of having a meal at Utsav when we are in NYC. The lamb vindaloo is the best I have ever had, anywhere, period. They have re-done the dining room since the last time we were here, and the decor is more modern. The seating is comfortable and the noise level such that conversation is easy. Usually easy to snag a reservation, too.
We went for the lunch buffet. The food was very good, including choice and taste. The staff was friendly and attentive. Although the place was packed (Friday lunchtime), they were prompt in service including removal of plates. The place was well decorated and very clean and comfortable. I would highly recommend.
We were looking for a pre-theater dinner with vegetarian options and decided Utsav met the bill. The service was professional, prompt yet friendly. We had no trouble making our show on time. We had a stuffed eggplant dish and okra. They were both well seasoned with spices without being that "hot." I think they tame the spice level down for tourists because we like hot spicy and requested it but thought the dishes were flavorful but a little tame in the heat dept. Although the taste was good, we thought both dishes were a little on the greasy side. I know -- the okra is fried and spiced, but I've had this dish elsewhere where it was not the least bit greasy. Overall, I would recommend for a convenient, relatively well priced, tasty pre-theater dinner (particularly in this area of the city that seems to seriously lack vegetarian options),
Xmas Eve dinner with my wife. The place was heaving with masses of people queueing for tables. Thankfully we'd reserved and were seated within 10 minutes of our booked time. Enjoyed the food which was good if not exceptional. Scallops starter was the stand-out dish I tried. Would definitely go back to try other dishes on the menu.
We've been to Utsav before shows before and it did not disappoint this time. Indian cuisine at its best. The atmosphere is unpretentious. The wait staff was very attentive but doesn't rush anyone. The food is, simply put, excellent, from the appetizers to dessert. As entrees, we recommend the Nawabi prawns, and the Achari baigan for eggplant lovers. Both are quite spicy - be sure to ask your wait person about spiciness when ordering!
Thank you Utsav! We found you at the last minute via the Zagat app, walked through very cold weather to find you... and we couldn't have been more delighted. Honestly, I believe it was the best Indian food I've ever tasted. Lovely atmosphere and charming server. We'll be back!
We chose Utsav for our Team Holiday Lunch. The buffet was a great way for non-Indians to taste many types of foods, and gave lots of options for the vegetarians on our team. The spiciness level of every dish on the buffet is labeled, so we knew what to expect when making our choices. I do remember the food being better last year (2016), but I don't know anything specific. Everyone commented on the ambiance - casual and elegant at the same time. The noise level was well controlled. We were able to have good conversations at a table for 8 without shouting. Overall, it was a good place for a celebration. I would recommend it.
Great restaurant for pre-theater meal in heart of Times Square. Lunch buffet was wonderful with more than enough selections for a vegetarian and very well priced at $21.95! Ambiance is light and airy located on a skywalk with window walls on both sides. Will definitely come back.
Waited 10 minutes to be seated despite arriving when restaurant opened at 5:30pm with a reservation. Only 3 menus given for our party of 4. Waited 20 minutes for waiter to come over & introduce himself & take order at which time he took drink order & food order together. Appetizers came before our bottle of wine did. Had to flag down another waiter after 5 more minutes to get the wine for us which didn't arrive until appetizers were essentially finished. After initial pour, no waiter returned to pour additional glasses. The bill was then wrong and had to be corrected adding more wasted time as we were pressed to get to a 7:30 show. Food was very good which is the only thing that saved this from being a total miserable experience but not necessarily good enough to warrant a return visit.
Generally good in many respects, but the service was very slow and disorganized. The waiters seemed to be arguing over something (in a foreign language) and it seemed to involve our table somehow. We did not have a complicated order or difficult group, but the first food we saw was appetizers that arrived about an hour after we were seated. There were other tables who were seated, served, ate and left while we were still awaiting the first course. The entrees arrived about 1 1/2 hour after we had been seated, but by then we had lost our appetites and had to leave. Someone needs to step up and show some leadership, and get control of the staff!
Pretty good standard Indian fare. Warning: portions are large. Consider sharing with your companion and ordering fewer dishes than people if in a larger group. In our case, four dishes would have been more than enough for our party of six. We did have several orders of bread and an order of black dal, so that helped staunch the appetite.
Also, if you say spicy, it will be spicy. What is merely tongue tingling for me was too hot for my friends.
I’ve dined at Utsav many times but this time food taste went down drastically. The food was bland...no flavour or spice. We were not asked about the spice level that they typically ask while taking the order. The tandoori roti was burnt. Overall didn’t enjoy at all.
