The food continues to amaze and delight. An experience not to be missed (and to repeat as often as you can).
This is an excellent shared experience on beautiful Lopez Island, falling in the unique category of high-class fine dining that doesn't necessitate getting all dressed up. It does, however, necessitate reservations, if you're smart. My wife and I celebrated our 30th anniversary at Ursa Minor, and it was a delight. We shared four different shared plates, each full of unique and intentionally crafted local flavors. We also enjoyed some great cocktails, and a little bubbly on the house (a 30th anniversary treat!). We finished off with house-made ice cream that was as unique as the rest of the meal. If not for this being out on an island, we'd be visiting again soon!
The service was great as well as the food. Dishes may sound weird but trust them, it all was amazing!
Lopez is a little out of the way, but it was definitely worth the day trip for the experience!
Great restaurant, and a great place to celebrate a special occasion. The food and the restaurant itself were beautiful, dishes were unique but delicious, and the homemade ice cream we had for dessert was INCREDIBLE! We hope to be back some day.
We loved this restaurant on Lopez... inventive, super fresh n local ingredients...
We had a fabulous meal. The service ,food quality, and the drinks were outstanding. The server was very attentive with an understanding of how the food was prepared. It was all amazing and delicious! We will be sure to return when on Lopez again.
A gem of a restaurant on a lovely island! The restaurant is quaint and comfortable, with a mid-century modern decor. We enjoyed the tasting menu - which showed off the quality of the products and their precision and skill of the chefs. Cannot recommend this place enough and I'm excited to plan another visit to Lopez Island to eat here again.
It was an amazing experience! Beginning from the incredible bread to start through the trio of ice creams at the end, every dish satisfying and inventive. Three of us shared 6 plates, especially loved the halibut - perfectly cooked and flavored. It was pretty quiet in a good way, we ate inside because it was quite windy outside. Service was excellent and well informed.
Amazing food and spot-on hospitality--so glad we booked ahead for our trip to Lopez. They do a great job of being creative while sticking with local, seasonal ingredients. They're using some really interesting techniques and flavors, but it still felt like a comforting, relaxed meal. Not an easy feat. All of the servers were warm and welcoming, the pace of service was great, and the place is full of thoughtful details.
We had a really nice dinner at Ursa Minor. The menu was a good assortment or locally grown ingredients. Each plate is a sharable plate. The food was fantastic and a good mix of things you might think don't go together well. It was a great experience and the service was fantastic. The costs of each dish ranged from $14 for a started to $29 for a main. Be prepared that the dinner will be expensive but it was a great experience and I would do it again.
A great experience! Unique dishes that were fresh, local, and -most importantly- delicious. We loved the emphasis on local seafood and veggies. We also enjoyed the unexpected pairings of ingredients, like a savory oatmeal with flavorful roasted chicken. Service was very friendly and attentive. We dined outdoors on the patio, which had a view of Fisherman Bay and a small garden with blooming flowers. We hope to return on our next visit to Lopez Island!
A beautiful location with unique foods and flavor. The service was top notch and the seasonal desserts were outstanding.
Outstanding food, unpretentious, casual setting. The fact that they served a whole chicken feet in wholesome (the Chinese way) officially made it my favorite fine dining restaurant in America!
Once again, the ingredients were first class, the flavors and textures were superb. The chef never fails to challenge, innovate and produce outstanding food.
Great food and service with a unique menu. Ingredients are locally sourced so the menu changes. They make may things in house like the amino butter and drinks like the quince soda were made in house.
Delicious, inventive food in a great setting, with a perfect wine list. In love with this place.
We really enjoyed Ursa Minor. The food was delicious! We tried most everything, and we were too full for dessert. They use fresh, local ingredients, and we appreciated their bartender’s attempt to concoct something like lemonade for two young boys - one boy liked it and the other didn’t. We hope to visit again in a different season!
This is a culinary experience not to be missed on Lopez Island. Chef Nick Coffey continues to amaze us with his unique creations using local farm to table ingredients.
I visited Lopez Island recently for the first time with my wife for our anniversary. We stayed at the Edenwild in the village, a short walk to Ursa Minor. We both knew the second we read the menu that we were in for a treat. I first ordered the wood fired bread and cultured butter, it was a nice start. Their wine list was small but decent, so we decided on a Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley which was very good. For shared plates we decided on the grilled brassica raab, burnt cabbage, salish sea halibut and the rabbit. The cabbage and halibut dishes stood out, but all four plates were excellent. Very well presented and timed perfectly. Our server was great and very attentive. For desert we went with the flowering currant ice cream which was also awesome. I had a glass of local whiskey to wash it all down and we went on our way. We will certainly be back to Ursa Minor. I cannot remember ever having such an awesome culinary experience anywhere in the San Juans or Skagit county.
Sean, Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a detailed review! We are honored that you chose Ursa Minor to celebrate your anniversary. So glad to hear that you and your wife enjoyed our food, wine and service! We appreciate your interest and support for the magic that we are creating at Ursa Minor. Hope to see you in again soon! Much thanks, Nick & Nova
We loved everything about Ursa Minor. The space is adorable, the food is fantastic and we had the best service from the minute we walked in the door.
Completely unique and unpretentious... Ursa Minor is an experience to seek out.
This restaurant is an incredible Jewel for Lopez Village! The service was excellent; the menu offerings blew us away with their flavor and inventiveness. We highly recommend!
One of the best meals I’ve had in years. Excellent and creative food and flavor combinations make it a unique experience for food lovers (and even vegetarians.)
A lovely way to enjoy a meal. Sheila & I especially like the shared plates and modest portions. Very nice service
We shared the menu item 'potatoes, fermented veg, yolk sauce, whey & salmon roe', next the 'salish sea halibut, celery root, rutabaga, nettles & hazelnuts', and the 'rabbit, grains, mushrooms, truffle & black garlic'. Of these the potato dish was my favorite.
Then finished up with the 'pumpkin seed miso ice cream, malt & honey crumbles'.
Nice selection of wine, interesting selection of beer.
Interesting, unique, menu. A gem on a beautiful island
Innovative, surprising, superb.
The attention to every little detail is what makes this place so special. I love eating here and if you haven't yet you should.
Beautiful food and atmosphere, the best in the area for “northwest agrarian” and prices are reasonable too. The cocktails are phenomenal and wine list is very unique. Highly recommend it.
This was the third time at Ursa Minor and it continues to be amazing. The food is imaginative, seasonal and pays attention to local sourcing. The flavors in the various dishes are incredible. If you are looking for a creative palette and respect for the fresh ingredients, this is the place for you!
We had a wonderful evening here, the food is clever and creative and the atmosphere was lovely. My dinner companion and I left inspired and in the glow of a wonderful experience.
Unusual flavor combinations and ingredients that were fabulous!
THE best ever dinner. Nick continues to wow us at every turn. Nova adds the perfect touch to making us feel so very welcome and at home in their restaurant.
We just returned from an anniversary trip to the San Juan Islands. Being off-season, many restaurant options are limited in December. But I am ever so grateful that Ursa Minor was open during our stay. It's located in a beautiful, quiet space and features some truly incredible dishes. My wife and I are still talking about the cauliflower dish and the smoked brown butter and bread. Everything was terrific, though.
We celebrated our anniversary with an early November trip to Lopez Island, including dinner at Ursa Minor. Loved going in the off-season--we were about 30 mins early to our 6:30pm reservation, but staff was super-accommodating and sat us early. Food was innovatively local (octopus who got caught in the spot prawn traps) without being intimidating or overly complex. Looking forward to returning here in different seasons to try something new.
There is an artist at work in the kitchen at Ursa Minor. Every bite is exquisite!
A phenomenal restaurant! The food and drinks were amazing and the staff provided excellent service. I appreciate their use of fresh, local ingredients. The menu changes regularly and is inventive with outstanding flavors. Everything was fantastic from the house negroni to the hay ice cream with poached pears and honey crumbles. However, I especially enjoyed the cauliflower with toasted yeast, yoghurt and cured yoke and the chicken with black garlic. I will definitely go back next time I am on Lopez Island.
We arrived at sunset when the brilliant pink-orange sky was casting a magical glow on the dining room. We asked our server, who we later learned was co-owner Nova Askue, to surprise us with her choices of an aperitif, a selection of dishes and a bottle of wine. We were greatly rewarded. Every drink, every dish, even the bread, was inspired—by the place, by the freshest ingredients available and especially by chef's exceptional creativity. We cannot wait to go back.
You might have to take a ferry boat to get here but that will only add to the wonderful experience that is Ursa Minor. I have to admit that I had reservations about the fabulousness of this place since it was getting wild accolades but they are ALL true! Every single bite we had was delish and the service superb. Do yourself a favor and hoof it up to Lopez.
