Food was delicious but our waiter was horrible; manager on duty apologized profusely and gave us some prosciutto on the house. Would recommend this restaurant for the great food; maybe our waiter just had a bad night.
Water glass came dirty...
Meat was extremely fatty
No soda water, no iced tea...basic drink for this time of year
The ambiance and great service was followed by delicious food. Our table had three different entrees and each were delicious, but all were steak or burgers. I can’t wait to go back to have their fish, which is also delicious!
It is one of the finest restaurants in down town silver spring, MD what amazing steak that i had!
Service was awful. Had to keep asking the hostess to find our waiter for attention . Many food items were not available. Food was good when it finally came. Other diners experienced the same frustration. So noisy that conversation was almost impossible. Very expensive for this kind of experience.
Outstanding service and food!
To be honest, I have given this place multiple chances—three times and three different main courses.
The ribeye is probably the best. The lamb Picanha smelled funky, and the beef Picanha was just off, and slightly over done.
It appears as if the meat quality is actually good. The prepping/seasoning process is misguided. The flavor of citrus or something resembling citrus dominated the beef Picanha. If you’ve had it in a Brazilian steakhouse, it’s nothing like that.
We were in the side section of the restaurant and given how it’s small and cut off to the side, it was way too loud.
Service was great. Knowledgeable waiters, and the staff as a whole is kind and welcoming.
Long story short, we had two drinks, two sides, an appetizer, and a beef Picanha for two the last time I went—cost me 120 dollars without tip. Not worth it. I still tipped my waiter because none of this was his wrong doing so I was out 145 at the end of the night...
I think management should focus on Urban Butcher, it seems like all attention has gone to El Sapo. Cooking techniques are off, and that’s an easy fix. At present, prices don’t resemble taste. I would come back if the cooking methods were upgraded.
I love Urban Butcher, great food and quick service!
This place is overhyped and overpriced. Don't go there expecting to get a great meal for what you are paying. The service is lackluster bordering with rude. They seem to be doing you a favor by allowing you to eat their creations. When we ordered our meals, one of us ordered steak tartare with a side of fries, clearly as a main dish. Tartare came ahead of all other food, accompanied with a piece of soggy toast with Parmesan on top (parmesan???), a soft boiled chicken egg and a MAYONNAISE sauce (tartar sauce does not go with steak tartare!). Steak tartare is one of those dishes that should not be messed with and these guys made it "their own" and inedible. We asked for crisp, not soggy, toast twice. First they brought back some thick soft bread with butter. Then the same soggy toast. On top of everything the server instead of apologizing rolled her eyes and left. Other people there seemed to be doing just fine, but we won't be coming back. I'd say go in with lowered expectations and willing to overspend on a mediocre meal.
First time at this restaurant. I will not return. I liked the set-up and ambience, and the service was fine.
We were a party of four and ordered the large ribeye and the large filet mignon, both serve two people each.
Both meats had been sliced for us when they got to the table which in principle would be fine and convenient, the issue here is that the meat was barely warm when it got to us, so it was obviously sitting there for a few minutes after it was cut and before it got to us. Completely unacceptable! This place specializes in meat, they should know better.
There are many other places to go eat meat that I try, so I will not be coming here again.
Food was absolutely fantastic! My friend and I only ordered off of the Happy Hour menu. I can't wait to try the entree options!
Mediocre food. Terribly long wait for the food. Impossible to have conversation due to noise levels.
Actually had the salmon on the early dinner special and it was great.
Great vibe. Side room is somewhat quieter than main room. Pastrami appetizer was ridiculously good. Pastrami can be overly salty-not this pastrami! Don’t waste time with the bread...it takes away from the flavors of the meat, crunchy cabbage, and house-made mustard.
The tenderloin was fabulous. Cooked to a perfect medium-rare, it was incredibly tender. The crisp garlic cloves adds a great flavor. The baked potato with lime butter was awesome!
We did not have dessert, but the donuts with Nutella whipped cream looked amazing. The table next to us raved about them. Definitely going back!
My husband and had the beef tenderloin for two which was amazing with French fries and grilled Brussels sprout and we ordered the bacon flavor mango goat cheese and vanilla ice cream which was different
After reading many reviews about Urban Butcher, I was a bit wary about dining here with my SO. However, it was his birthday and he seriously loves meat so I decided to give it a go. We were sat right away right next to the open garage door which was awesome for such a lovely day. The hostess acknowledged his birthday, however, for a restaurant with such high prices, i'm surprised the restaurant didn't do anything for his birthday. Our server was very nice, but never checked on us. Our apprentice board showed up fairly quickly (the lamb bacon was delicious!), but we waited about 45 minutes after finishing the board before our meat mountain showed up. The meat mountain was tasty, but it wasn't $95 tasty. The pork was outstanding and the beef delicious, but both my SO and I could have done without the chicken sausage.
Overall, the service is not the best as many have mentioned because the servers seem to have more tables than they can handle (having worked in the restaurant industry in DC, I get it, but you may need more staff), it can get pretty loud, and the food is good, but not great enough for the prices. If we ever go again, I'd skip the meat mountain.
I went to the restaurant on a date with my wife. I ordered the lamb burger with lettuce, tomato, cheddar, and avocado. The burger was delicious and cooked exactly as ordered, but the service was subpar. I twice emphasized to the waiter that I wanted avocado on the burger, but the server brought the burger without it. I think this was the kitchen’s oversight. It was not the end of the world, but it did irritate me. I pointed the omission out to the fellow who served us, when he just happened to pass by our table. He then went to the waiter, who after a while came to our table to make sure he understood the problem! The waiter then went to the kitchen to complete my order. After a while, the server delivered it to the table as a side. Nor was there salt and pepper on the table. I had to request it too. It also took too long to get the waiter’s attention to ask for the check. I don’t necessarily blame the kitchen or the waiter - things were hectic - but I guess the lesson is that Urban Butcher needs to find a way to up its game as far as service is concerned when things are busy.
The food was delicious, and the service was very prompt, courteous and attentive
The meat is great. It's served very fatty, but that can be trimmed off and the lean is extra flavorful. Get the prix fixe Mountain of Meat and you can have a generous lunch off the leftovers.
This night the bartending was off. I ordered their variant of a Moscow mule, but it was undrinkably filled with cloves or cinnamon--a lot. I sent it back and then ordered a vodka gimlet, which tasted like cloves again. Then I ordered their variant of a gin and tonic (with rosemary) and got a pretty good Moscow mule (not tonic; ginger beer). Strange.
But the meat makes the trip worth it.
Urban Butcher is a treasure. The restaurant features delicious food, excellent service, and warm, welcoming environment. Free parking is nearby. The early supper is a good bargain.
This is a good local place for dinner and/or cocktails. Not our first visit. The food was quite good, but the service was lacking. As two examples, the waiter did not know what kinds of pate they had, and the food took a long time to get to us (other tables around us had a similarly long wait. Also, the noise level is very high. I struggled to have a conversation with my dining companion. That said, you won't find a better or more tender filet mignon.
The hostess had on cowboy boots, cut off jean shorts and a stretched out top that showed ALL of her boobs. She was very nice and gracious, but I was dining with a family with young kids and her top and her breasts showing was inappropriate - even if we did not have children with us.
The $50 tenderloin was below room temperature and not worth it. I was insulted by the tip suggestions on the check. Where most restaurants suggest 15/17/20, this place suggests 20/22/25.
Overall a horrible value
We went for the "early bird" special which is quite a deal. 3 courses for a set price but you can upgrade. The staff was most welcoming. Excellent service great food (although none of the 4 of us have tried other than the "steak/frites.")
The dessert donuts are a special treat.
We will return!!!
We arrive on time for a 7:00 reservation. While we were seated on-time, we did not get water until 7:20 and did not see a waiter until 7:35. He took drink orders and said he would be right back to take food order. 7:50 he arrives with drinks and takes appetizer orders, which are finally served at 8:15; an hour and 15 minutes after we arrived. We place dinner order when appetizers come since everything is taking so long. We also order a bottle of wine to go with dinner. Dinner arrives at 8:45. Wine doesn't appear until after 9:00 when we are well through dinner. I've never experienced such terrible service.
We came from Pittsburgh PA just to dine at Urban Butcher. And when I tell you Urban Butcher did not disappoint, please beleive me!!! I'm not sure what the light green sauce was called that came with the BEEF EMPANADAS (I think), but I even used in for my FIELD MIXED GREENS and it was delish! We ordered the MEAT MOUNTAIN and a pitcher of the LAVENDAR MARGARITA! Again, Urban Butcher did not disappoint.
Anniversary. Great service and food. Spent time at the bar and then a table. Everyone from the bartender to the manager and waiters were upbeat and made us very comfortable.
If you like steaks and chops in an informal restaurant that is very energetic than this is your place but be forewarned: you will need to increase your credit line to afford the outing. These prices match if not exceed DC steak house prices.
The aged tenderloin for two was cooked to perfection and absolutely melted in your mouth. Brussels sprouts never tasted so good. And save room for the donuts with... wait for it... Nutella whipped cream. Not inexpensive by any means, but a memorable meal coupled with attentive service.
A matter of expectations. We drove an hour to get here expecting hour teeth to fall off based on all the reviews. We do try steakhouses on a weekly basis and while we had a good meal we didn't have a great meal. Not a fan of the chicken sausage, the pork chops were good, the rib eye was ok, the meat highlight was definitely the lamb. The puree was good, the Broccolini...way off. As with many reviews, the highlight of the night was that lavender margarita... very, very good.
Other than that, the place looks great but is in the loud side.
I'll probably have to go back for the tenderloin to see if it lives up to the hype.
Overall we had a great evening with friends. Service was a bit slow in general and we had to ask three times about an appetizer that had been forgotten. (It came out 90 minutes after we ordered it) Aside from that, our food was cooked to temperature and our server was quick to keep our drinks coming. Would return to Urban Butcher.
For the most part our meal and experience was good. However, two things in particular made the meal less than stellar.
First, we ordered the beef empanadas. The description only stated that they were served with chimchurri. It turns out they were stuffed with raisins and olives, which we were not anticipating and we would not have ordered this dish if we knew. Our server never checked in about why we returned them untouched.
Second, our server was not very attentive overall. After our entrees were delivered, we needed some salt for the fries. The server walked by us multiple times but we could not catch his eye until about 20 minutes after we had starting eating our entrees, which by then was not even worth asking for it.
The rest of our food was very good, but the service definitely will make us think twice before returning.
While the food was good, service was less than poor. We were seated in the back room (art in progress) in a corner where our server would need to really enter the room to check on us. She rarely did. So I would recommend the food and give you a second chance and hope for a better server.
I don't think they check their reservations carefully. It was a reservation for 3 and they thought it was 2, and here I can see it was always for 3. Lucky for me it was early and not a problem, but I wonder if it had been later if they could've been so accommodating. The meat mountain was very good. So for early supper $35 prix fixe, an excellent deal. I just don't know if it would have been worth $60 later. Like very good, but $60-75 good? hmmm, not sure. Wine by the glass was sub par. They only had 1 brand of each type of wine. Not very practical if you don't want to share a bottle/have different tastes. So yes I could do another early supper there, just wouldn't probably spend twice as much for that experience.
The food and service were great! It was REALLY loud and hard to hear and to talk
Everything was excellent
The food, drinks and dessert was delicious.
The staff was very friendly and professional.
A little pricey but I think it's worth it.
Great good. Good deals for happy hour and early supper. Great margaritas!
Too expensive for just ok food. Lamb chops were very fatty with not much flavor. VERY loud; several glasses being dropped and breaking due to staff moving around quickly and not watching. I expect a nice abieance and excellent service when prices are this high. The best part of my meal was the bake potato!
Food was delicious! We had the house salad and capers salad, tenderloin for 2, Brussels sprouts and loaded baked potato. Everything was great. Downside was slow service (took a long time to get our food), and limited beer and wine menu. Would come back for the food.
